All you need to do is press and hold the Volume Down button on the side and it'll mute the sound completely in two seconds! It's much faster than rapidly pressing volume down, lowering the volume one tick at a time. So next time you're playing a game or watching a movie and someone comes up and starts talking to you, you have a quick fix for silence! Now if only humans had that same option
~Andrew Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- Todd from MI asks: I read all the time about "open source" this and "open source" that. What the heck does "open source" mean, anyways? Hey, Todd good question! Basically, the term "open source" is used to describe a program or app where the author(s) gives the public access to the source code. Although some companies aren't thrilled with this concept, many terrific pieces of software are open source (the Linux operating system, Mozilla Firefox and the Ogg Vorbis sound file format come to mind). Since the code is freely distributed, the software is also (generally) free as well. If you want support, that will sometimes carry a fee the author has to pay the rent somehow, right? That said, there are usually lots of resources out there for large, open source programs. Your friendly neighborhood search engine can help with that and most open source programs have a Wiki to reference as well! The idea behind writing software like this is you get input, code, and improvements from lots (hundreds? thousands?) of different programmers. Not an easy task for a single company to copy. As such, the program evolves rapidly and tends to have fewer bugs (and that's always good). Just imagine if Windows was open source ~ Steve Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version
Do You HATE Your Keyboard? Can't....See... THE LETTERS?! Typing Just Became Possible Again... WITH THE BIG BRIGHT KEYBOARD! THE PERFECT CONTRAST! Standard Alpha Numeric Keyboard With 12 Function Keys... USB POWERED PLUG & PLAY SIMPLICITY!
Well it's About Time... Whether you have 20/20 vision or wear coke-bottle glasses that make your eyes look like baseballs, the letters and numbers on those keyboards are just TOO SMALL TO SEE! It's so annoying! Someone understands, and they've done something about it! It's a standard alpha numeric keyboard (the exact set up you're likely used to), but with MASSIVE letters on those keys and a color scheme to make it simple to see! BIG Letters + Contrasting Colors = Perfect Keyboard Vision! Most keyboards have tiny letters and numbers on the keys. Why? There's a ton of real estate left on each of those keys to make the letters bigger! It's just common sense, right? Well, apparently not... Apparently, they want us to strain our eyes for eight hours every day. Maybe the manufacturers of these keyboards are in business with the optometrists and major eye glasses companies... The letters and numbers on each of these keys are MASSIVE! You'd have to be legally blind to not be able to see them...and even then, you should be able to make them out! And it's not just the huge letters that make such a difference: it's the colors! Bright green keys. Dark black letters. It's the perfect contrast! You can't go wrong! Simple to Set Up: Plug & Play! As you can see from the image, there's NOTHING complicated about this thing. It's a keyboard with one cord attached to it. That cord plugs directly into your USB port and you're ready to use it! No drivers, no set up, just 100% plug and play simplicity! A few facts: It's also PC and MAC compatible, so it works on everything! Things Can Be WAY Easier for a VERY Small Price! Some places would charge a small fortune for something this cool. But not us! Tim from OH writes: Many flash drives come pre-loaded with a small amount of software. Is it safe to delete this if you plan to use the flash drive only for storage? That really depends on the kind of software on the flash drive, Tim. If the flash drive comes with free applications/games/trials: This kind of software is ok to remove since it's not directly tied to how the flash drive functions. The best way to remove this software is to reformat the flash drive before you begin using it. Step 1.) Plug in the flash drive and open My Computer (or Computer for Windows 7 users) and right click on the flash drive (Usually drive letter E or higher in this example it's drive F) and left click format. Step 2.) You can change the drive's label (the name that comes up next to drive letter it was "Corsair" on my drive by default, but can be changed) and click Start. This will reformat the drive and wipe out everything on it. Once it is complete, the drive will be ready to use without any software wasting space. If the flash drive comes with encryption software/security software: This may be very dangerous to remove and you should contact the device manufacturer. Some flash drives have a hardware encryption, which requires a program to stay on the flash drive and run to decrypt the information on it. Do not reformat one of these drives unless the manufacturer indicates to you that the included software can be removed. ~Tim Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- Apple has announced a new model of the highly popular MacBook Pro series of laptops, the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Ray from UT writes: I am thinking about buying an Android tablet. However, I don't know which version of the OS is the best. Can you shed some light on the difference among the Android OS (from 2.0 to 4.0)? Also, can you upgrade to a more advanced version after the purchase? Android has a lot of great features, including customization, open development, and tons of devices to choose from. One thing that's a problem though is something called fragmentation. Fragmentation means that instead of most Android devices running the same basic operating system software, there are many, many versions. So which Android version is best and what should you avoid? It's pretty simple: (The higher the number, the more recent the version of Android. The codename (the words in parentheses) is a name Google assigns each version and is named after a snack) Get all the details here! (Want these tips in their entirety? Mark as Read in MS Outlook If you're like me then when MS Outlook let's you know that you've got a new message you usually see an envelope down in the bottom corner of your taskbar (the system tray). I happen to have a love/hate relationship with that little envelope. I love that it let's me know that a new message has arrived since my work computer is used for teaching purposes and is displayed most of the time I can't have the type of notification that would display actual information about the message but I can use that little envelope! Since the early versions of iTunes, there have always been checkboxes next to song titles used for selecting and deselecting songs. Well, what if you've never used them? Why keep something around you may accidentally uncheck? Go to Edit>Preferences, and under the General tab un-check Show list checkboxes and click OK. Voila! No more checkboxes! This site is fun and strangely addicting, but 'm going to get the warnings out first. As clearly noted on the site, children should only use this with parental supervision, the Clever Bot AI is not a human but its AI learns from the humans who interact with it, so at times it may say something inappropriate. I didn't have anything inappropriate come up during the two hours (hey, I said it was addicting) that I played around with it, but that isn't to say it couldn't happen. With that said, I had so much fun chatting with Clever Bot that I couldn't wait to share the site with you! There are three buttons below the blank text box, they are Think About It, Think For Me, and Thought So Far. You can write some text in, say whatever you want and hit enter, or you can click Think About It to input your text. Then Clever Bot will reply. Don't feel like responding? Make Clever Bot talk to itself by clicking Think For Me. Want to see what has been said so far? Click Thoughts So Far, and another window will pop up showing you the conversation so far. I found the interaction with Clever Bot to be highly addicting! You've been warned! ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- I adore optical illusions, which you may have noticed from the sites I've shared in the past. Well, I found an awesome site dedicated to optical illusions that I couldn't wait to share with you. I really liked it because it isn't just same optical illusions that you're used to seeing, but modern interpretations of illusion that will have your jaw dropping! The site is easy to navigate because it is set up blog-style, so just scroll down the page and prepare to be wowed. You can also use the Older Posts link at the bottom of the page to see the previous entries. Each entry offers background on the illusion being featured as well as an example of it. They also often include links to where you can see more of that type of illusion, or to previous entries of the same kind of illusion. I really loved the most recent post when I was there. It was the Lego Terracotta Army a sidewalk chalk drawing of Lego people as the famous Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang. It probably helps that I've been obsessed with sidewalk chalk since I was a little kid (and then seeing Mary Poppins) didn't help matters any. I also loved the video of the Checker Shadow Illusion, and the Fact/Fiction Ambigram (I saw Faction at first). The Terrace by David MacDonald was also really well done. My suggestion is to just dive in and start going through the illusions; but take a break if your eyes start to hurt. Some of the black and white or black and bright yellow ones hurt my eyes after a long viewing. This is an awesome site dedicated to optical illusions, go check it out! http://www.anopticalillusion.com/ ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com FACT: Your Hard Drive Will Eventually FAIL! 100% GUARANTEED, FOR SURE - IT'S GONNA CRASH!!! Ahh, but if you have Disk Image, it's a snap! Just create an image of your current system onto the new drive and BINGO - Install the new drive and everything is just like it was before the upgrade - except now you have all the extra space!
