Quick Tip

Carol from Brisbane, Australia writes:

Is it necessary to do defrag, disk cleanups, etc. to my USB devices to keep them performing optimally?

One of the best features of a USB memory device, or any solid state hard drive, is that they do not need to be defragmented. In fact, it may even damage the device if you defragment it too many times. The simple way to explain it is to think of a flash memory device like a form you fill out with pencil. If you need to change what's written on the form you can erase the pencil and write again in the same spot.

The problem is if you erase the pencil marks too many times; eventually you'll damage that spot on the paper and you can't write on it anymore. Each memory cell on a flash memory device only has a certain number of times you can read/write to it before it becomes damaged.

Don't worry though – because flash memory doesn't need to be defragmented (as there are no moving parts) there is no excess wear from moving a drive head to a different position, as a regular a hard drive would.

Dark Hallway are DANGEROUS!

Do You Enjoy Stubbed Toes?

How About Tumbling Down Steps in the Dark?

Late Night Trips to the ER?

IF NOT, YOU'VE GOTTA HAVE THE MOTION SENSOR LED LIGHTS!

It's the Light That Can See You Coming!

http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/ct-images/7675-video.jpg

4 Bright LED Bulbs Automatically Turn on When You Walk by...

AND AUTOMATICALLY TURN OFF 30 SECONDS LATER!

No Electricity Required!

They're Automatic and Simple to Mount!

Dark Hallways are SCARY...

There you were, walking down the hallway leading to the stairs. It was 2 A.M. and you were still half asleep. All of the sudden, the floor seemed to disappear from right under you. It's the stairs. Narrowly escaping what could have been catastrophic, you realized it was time to do something about it. But what?

We've got a BRIGHT, motion sensored 4 LED light that turns on when it sees you coming - check this thing out!

Automatic Motion Sensor Technology!

That's right - using motion sensor technology, these nightlights AUTOMATICALLY turn on when you're walking by, illuminating your path and eliminating the risk of tripping or, even worse, falling down the steps.

They also AUTOMATICALLY shut off 30 seconds later - so they last FOREVER!

Each light Has 4 LED bulbs - HUGE POWER!

And with only 3 buttons on the entire contraption, they're super easy to operate. In fact, once you have it mounted and set, you don't EVER have to do anything with them again except enjoy their usefulness.

Battery Operated - Simple to Use & Install!

You already know how long LED bulbs last (like 10+ years!), and you already know that batteries last 10X longer powering LED over a standard bulb. So pop in 3 AAA's and you're all set!

Easy to Operate: there's a switch on the side giving you three options. You can set it on "Auto" and it'll work just like described above: turn on when it senses movement, and off automatically.

There's also a regular "On" setting, where the LED light stays on, and a regular "Off" setting where it stays turned off.

You can leave these on for a LONG time before the batteries will need replaced.

It Even Doubles as a Hand-Held Flashlight!

Guess what? This light actually detaches from it's mount and can be carried around with you! Perfect if you have a power outage! Walk over to your light (you know, the LED one that automatically turns itself on when it sees you coming), and simply pull it from it's mount. Now you're walking around with a 4 LED flashlight!

Oh - and speaking of it's mount...

Two SIMPLE hanging Options!

Stick it on with Velcro: The back has two peel-off pieces of Velcro. Pull them off and you'll notice that the back is sticky. Stick 'em on your walls, and connect the back to them by adding a little bit of pressure and...that's it!

Mount it With the INCLUDED Hardware: Pretty easy. A couple of plastic anchors for the drywall, and a couple of screws to drive in. Once that's set up, just match the grooves on the back and put it on. Simple, secure, permanent!

On The Move

Add a Settings Key to the Onscreen Android Keyboard

Adjusting the settings on an Android onscreen keyboard is done–surprisingly–in Android keyboard settings, where many optional features are available (vibrate and sound, auto-correct, and auto-capitalization, etc.). One way to access these settings, is by meandering through the following series of menus; Settings>Language & input (or Language & keyboard)>Android keyboard. Or, on at least some models, there's a shortcut available to the settings through one of the keys. In addition–again on certain models–a settings key can be added to the keyboard for even quicker and easier access.

Note: This is displayed in Android 4.0.

Long press the microphone key and slide to the Settings button.

Shrink to Fit in Excel

Ever have data in MS Excel that's just a bit too long for the cell?

What happened?

Did the column widen to accommodate? Or, maybe you got the infamous ##### to let you know that the number didn't fit. Oh, and let's not forget everyone's favorite: the old "convert the number to scientific notation."

If the results of Excel's attempt to accommodate the large data are not to your satisfaction, here's an alternative you can try to see if you like it any better. (After all, too many columns with extra width may cause problems for printing later on in your day).

Excel has a cell formatting option called "shrink to fit." Its effects on data look like this:

Today's Feature

Tune Up

If you take a look through your iTunes music collection, you are bound to see more than a few songs that are misspelled, missing artist or album information, missing cover art, or my personal least favorite: a bunch of songs named Track 01, Track 02 and so on. These often come from downloading music off the Internet that doesn't have the complete track information, or from importing mix CDs for which iTunes cannot find the track info. Correcting all of these imperfections manually would be a near impossible task, but today I am going to show an application that makes it oh-so easy! It is called TuneUp, and it makes adding missing music information a jiffy. Let's check it out, shall we?

1. TuneUp is a plugin that works alongside iTunes. Not only does it allow you to clean up your music collection, but it also has some other neat features as well.

Names of Animals

My roommate and I were having a discussion about goats the other day, and collectively we wondered what you call a group of goats. Were they a herd? A flock? A gang? A mob? I've learned over the years that you can never assume what any group of animals is called, so I decided to look it up and found this lovely chart with a listing of animal names – not only for groups of animals, but also what the male and female of each species is called.

It turns out that a group of goats can be called a herd, a tribe, or even a trip.

The site is easy to use – just scroll down the chart to find the animal you are looking for – they are listed in alphabetical order. The chart has columns for the name of the Animal, Male, Female, Baby, and Group. Once you've found the animal you were looking for, you can just read across the chart to see what the appropriate name is for each category. If you want to learn more about the animal you're looking up, just click on the animal's name and you'll be whisked away to a page of information about it.

I clicked on goat and learned that they've been domesticated for at least 10,000 years, can live for 9 to 12 years in wild, and that both male and female goats sport horns and beards! And that's just a small portion of the information served up on the Goat page. I think that this would be a great site to visit with your kids if they are interested in animals, because they can learn all about different animals with just a click.
