|  WorldStart Tech Tips 2012-06-08  Windows 7 Math Input Panel Here's another one of those didn't-know-it-existed-until-I-clicked-it-by-accident tools in Windows 7. It's called the Math Input Panel. To access it, simply click Start, and in the Search Box that appears above, type in Math Input Panel. The Window should look like this:  Now, I'm not a math whiz, so I'll let the fine folks at Microsoft explain what it's used for. "Math Input Panel uses the math recognizer that's built into Windows 7 to recognize handwritten math expressions. You can then insert the recognized math into a word-processing or computational program. " Hmm…sounds useful!

It came on my Gateway computer that I bought in Dec. 2010. Windows 7 includes a Windows Genuine Advantage checker which verifies that your copy of Windows is legally licensed. However, sometimes there is an error which causes Windows to forget it is registered – but there is an easy fix. The first step is to look at the side of your computer, or on the bottom for a Windows Authenticity Label. This label will show your Windows 7 serial number. Write down the serial number.  Once the serial number is written down, click the Start button and in the search box type: Activate Windows In this window you can enter in your product key and proceed with activation. You may need to click the Change product key button and type in the product key again. Once activated, you should receive the below message and will no longer be prompted that your copy is not genuine. Yes, there is a way to set up a preferred connection. First, make sure that you're within range of the connection that you'd like to make your favorite. Down by your clock you'll see a series of bars that look like the reception bars on your cell phone. Click on these and you'll see a list of the wireless connections within range of your PC, along with information such as reception strength and, as you click on each one, whether they are secured or unsecured. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate. How do I get those icons back? Your taskbar icons (the tiny icons on the lower right hand side of the task bar next to the clock) have a nasty tendency (in Windows 7, at least) to either disappear or stay visible when you don't necessarily need them to. The good thing is Microsoft included a very simple way to customize which icons notify you and which ones always show. Step 1.) Click the triangle next to your task bar icons.  Step 2.) Click on Customize…  Step 3.) Locate the icon you want to change how it displays and click the drop down box next to it. The three options are: 1: Show icon and notifications: This will always show the icon and any notification/popup message the application is trying to send to you. 2: Only Show Notifications: This will only popup a notification if the program is trying to notify you and won't display the icon otherwise. 3: Hide icon and notification: This will hide any popup/notification and you'll need to manually open the program to see any information from it. Will it help my computer to delete them? Let's start with an explanation… those files you've found are Temp (temporary) Files. Often they will have a ".tmp" extension and are located in a Temp folder. Various programs will create them while you're working to hold auto-save files or other data the program may need. When you close the program they should be erased, but as you've found that's not necessarily the case. Sign up for Premium!) --- Powerpoint: Making the Difficult Fonts More Readable When putting together a document and using some more interesting fonts, I'm sure that you've run into the same thing that I have… the font is cool, what you want, but not very readable for some people. The design of the font just makes it feel "squished" together. For you and me, not a problem… after all we chose the font… but for some of our audience it just isn't going to work. The spacing of the characters is just too close together for them to easily read your message. If they can't read it, why did you bother with all the work to make it? I have a humongous list of things to do this summer: painting the living room, hanging shelves, getting rid of books I don't need, knitting like the wind, crocheting, organizing, and crafting. This past semester, three of the students I was doing academic coaching for asked, and sometimes I get random e-mails about it. After giving it some thought, I searched the net for a collection of tips that encompassed the advice I normally give and offered more. I found The Ultimate Guide to Writing Better Than You Normally Do posted on McSweeneys. The great thing about writing is that you can always get better at it. Even published, best-selling authors can improve their writing (you might notice this if you read a series – I sure do!) and I've seen a dramatic improvement in my own writing just over the last four years of actively writing for school and work. Here you'll find ten tips that will help you write better than you normally do. I agree with all of them, but I'd add the caveat that it is important to recognize that there are different kinds of writing as well: commercial, academic, creative, etc. So you have to know your audience in order to be successful at what you are doing. The one I have the most trouble following is Don't Procrastinate. I confess, I do all my writing for school at the last minute, I believe I write better under the pressure of getting it done. I even experimented this semester with getting an early start, and got nowhere. So I'm still battling with that one. It applies to my creative writing too, especially since there are no deadlines, I tend to start a story and then get distracted and not come back to it, but I'm working hard this summer to revisit those things and get some of them finished.
