Raul from Puerto Rico asks: Hey, Raul it's not a ridiculous questions at all hopefully this offers some insight. How do you attach it? Usually via a little paper clip icon in your e-mail software. Just click it and you should get a dialog box that lets you navigate to, and attach, the file of your choice. And no, it doesn't take the file off your computer, it only sends a copy of it. A word of caution though. Keep an eye on the size of the file you're sending. JoAnn from Tyler, MN writes: My new Windows 7 PC came with "Hulu". What is it supposed to be? Hi JoAnn, and thanks for the great question. Many people noticed Hulu on their new Windows 7 computers also and wondered what it was. It is actually a great piece of software that allows you to watch TV shows and movies online. It's true you can also download TV shows and movies using a P2P service, (like BitTorrent) but it is very illegal to do it this way. Hulu offers a way for you to watch your favorite television shows and movies without any legal or copyright issues. There are many movies and television shows available too. You can find popular television shows from the major TV networks such as NBC, MGM, Sony, and Fox and movies from most of the major studios, as well. Hulu is especially great if you have a television series you have always wanted to watch but have fallen behind in. No problem! Find it on Hulu, and watch it from the beginning to catch up. The best thing about Hulu is there is no software to download on your computer, because everything you watch is online. As long as you have Flash player installed on your computer you can view any television show or movie that you want completely free! The video opens in a pop-up window and then you can watch it in full-screen if you desire. Hulu Plus Hulu Plus, on the other hand, is a subscription service that allows you to watch your favorite television shows and movies on devices, such as smart televisions, mobile phones, tablets, and gaming consoles for a fee of $7.99 per month. Give it a try if you're looking for a more mobile platform to watch on, or want to take advantage of that expensive Smart TV you just bought! Hope this answers your question, JoAnn! ~Rita Wood Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!
Passive and Active 3-D TV's
What's the Difference? Some time ago, I did an article here about the history of 3-D and how it was then coming to a television near you. Now, it has come and prompting another question as it does: What's the difference between "active" and "passive" 3-D? Well, I'm here to tell you. Passive 3-d was the first 3-d format, and it still hangs around today. In passive 3-d, two images are displayed on the screen simultaneously, and you wear glasses that can distinguish the two and blend them into a (hopefully) smooth image free of 3-d "artifacts" (the shading that you sometimes see around 3-d images). There are two types of passive 3-d currently in use. The first, anaglyph (red/cyan) is typically only used on standard def DVD's. The biggest problem with this type, since the advent of color film and TV, is that it distorts the colors on the screen. The second type, the type used on Blu-ray discs and all modern 3-d TV's, is polarized. These look like sunglasses, but provide no U/V protection for your eyes, so don't try to use them that way. Active 3-d, like passive, uses two separate images on the screen, but this time they actually flash so fast that the naked eye can't distinguish them as flashing. The glasses, typically powered by batteries, contain LCD lenses that shutter in synch with the images on the screen, obscuring first one eye and then the other (again, so fast that you can't see it), giving a flawless 3-d image. The glasses themselves are larger and somewhat heavier than the passive polarized glasses, and require recharging between uses. The first pairs that were used in cinemas, in fact, were so bulky and heavy that they had to be worn like baseball caps. As a glasses wearer, I actually preferred these because they were more comfortable to wear with prescription glasses. The biggest drawback to these, however and the reason that theaters no longer use them is that they gave some viewers blasting headaches, or, in some particularly unlucky cases, seizures. Another big difference is the cost. A passive 3-d TV can cost $500 or so less than an active 3-d TV, and you can buy four or five pairs of good passive glasses for the cost of one pair of active 3-d glasses. Hope that this helps. ~Randal Schaffer Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version
What the F-key? F1 through F4 See that line of keys ranging from F1 to F12 at the top of your keyboard? Wonder what all of 'em do? Yeah, so do I, and that's why today we're going to take a trip down funky f-key lane to discover the fun of Function Keys! Function keys have many, many uses, some of which are specific to the program that's running at the time. They're mainly used as shortcuts or in conjunction with the CTRL, ALT, and Shift keys, which I'll get more into in another article. For now, here are the basics of function keys F1 F4. F1- Typically pressing this brings up the help file for the program you're currently in. To test this, go ahead and left click on a blank area of your desktop, then press F1. The help file should spring to life, offering it's bounty of knowledge! F2 This F-key is used to rename stuff. Click on a file or folder and strike the F2 key; you'll be able to rename it with ease! This is a good one to know if you're zipping through a bunch of files you're archiving and you have a specific naming convention in mind. Click the file, press F2 and rename it! wash, rinse, repeat! F3 Used to bring up the search function in Windows, but varies for other programs. Great for Internet Explorer and Firefox users who want to find a specific word or phrase on a web page with ease! F4 In Internet Explorer the F4 key opens the address bar. Even though I said I wouldn't be mentioning any extra key commands until later, I must mention that pressing ALT + F4 will close any active program. Careful with this one! ~Andrew Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version
I've Always Wanted To Know: A video card, at it's most basic level, is used to display the image on the screen of your computer. Most computers today can either have a integrated, discreet video card or sometimes both. An integrated video card is a portion of a CPU which has dedicated circuitry to process images and video. Most modern CPU's have integrated graphics which allow for longer battery life on laptops and cheaper desktop computers. A discreet, or dedicated, graphics card is a board with it's own memory, graphics processor and circuitry dedicated to video and image processing.
