WWDC 2012

News From The World Of Apple

Apple hosted its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) earlier this week and released some mostly expected news. Some may argue that the announcement of various updates to their MacBooks and Mac OS, however the news that will affect most people is the announcement of revealed details of Apple's newest mobile operating system, iOS 6.

The operating system, which is found on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touches, is said to boast more than 200 new features and upgrades. Some of the biggest updates include Facebook integration, improvements to the voice-controlled Siri, and replacing Google Maps with Apple Maps. The Facebook integration allows iOS users, if they choose, to easily share their photos, details, and locations more easily through Safari and the Photos app.

Probably the most notable update is Apple replacing Google Maps with their own map app. The new app is currently in beta but boasts 3D models and turn-by-turn directions. These features were not available in Google Maps to iOS users. Some claim that Apple Maps does fall short of Google, however. Currently there is no "Street View"-like feature and Google's maps seem to contain a lot more information. Of course, Apple's maps are relatively new and they haven't had the time that Google has had to gather large amounts of information for the maps. More is expected of Apple Maps when the final version of iOS 6 is released to the public sometime this fall.

ICANN

Anything ICANN Do… Will Probably Cause Google.google

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is going to make your Internet a whole lot bigger (from our perspective, at least). ICANN, which is the non-profit organization that manages the Internet's web domains, is prepping for the biggest domain name expansion in almost a decade. The expansion will include creating brand new top-level domains — the part of a web address that is ".com" or ".org".

Following the initial news of ICANN's expansion has been a huge number of new proposed domain names — 1,930 to be exact. These proposals came from companies such as Chrysler, JPMorgan Chase, Apple, Google, and many others. Amazon filed for 76 new top-level domains, such as .read, .fire, and .pay while Google applied for a whopping 101 new domains, .google being an obvious inclusion.

Adding new top-level domains is nothing new, in fact we've added domains such as .biz and .info in recent years, but this new expansion will break all the records. It will also cause some bad blood, as many companies are vying for the same domains. If disputes aren't settled between competing companies then the new domains will be auctioned off. We can expect to see the companies that win either .money, .pizza, and .web to fork out a hefty sum of cash to land their coveted domain.

CLICKFREE IS THE EASIEST BACKUP SYSTEM IN THE WORLD!

No Drivers - No Setup - Just 100% Plug & Play Automatic Backups!

256 Bit Password Protection - Multiple Computer Support!

A Sad Fact, But a True One....

Hard drives are sensitive, complex mechanical devices. No matter what, 100% of the time, they will eventually fail - causing a crash. This can be a disaster.

What will you do when this happens? Sure, you can pull out your program CD's (like your Windows program) and reinstall your operating system. But what about ALL OF YOUR DATA? You know, pictures, videos, files, settings...the list goes on and on. If your system crashes, I've got news for you: that stuff is gone for good!

Now consider this: there's hundreds of millions of computer users out there, and 80% of them do NOT back their files up. Why? Because until now, backing everything up was a long and complicated process. You'd have to find specific things to back up, deal with directories, file extensions, etc. IF you were able to figure it out, there's no way you'd have the time to back up every single thing. I mean...you've gotta sleep sometime, right?

These problems are over for good! We've found an automatic backup hard drive that does ALL of that work for you! Did I mention it's automatic? Oh...well guess what? IT'S ALL AUTOMATIC!

The ClickFree Automatic Backup Hard Drive is here!

NO software. NO set up. NO time consuming steps. All you have to do is PLUG IT IN and it AUTOMATICALLY finds, scans and saves ALL of your files - you don't have to do anything!

It's a MASSIVE 500gb of AUTOMATIC back-up space!

It's USB 3.0 and FULLY compatible with USB 2.0: If you're working from a new USB 3.0 machine, you're not gonna believe the speed! And if you're working with USB 2.0 like most of us, don't worry - this is FULLY compatible and gives you the absolute maximum speed possible! It's the best of both worlds, and prepared for the future!

EXTREMELY user friendly: it'll even categorize your music, pictures, videos and documents into separate areas for maximum organization! Oh, and it works on multiple computers - you've gotta check this thing out!

Think about everything you keep on your computer: TONS of photos. Your ENTIRE music collection. Work documents, important files and sensitive information. And don't forget about those vacation and family gathering videos. You've gotta back that stuff up!

The ClickFree Automatic Backup Hard Drive Makes it EASY!

If You Think it's Hard or Time Consuming - YOU'RE WRONG!

Seriously, this thing couldn't be any easier to use: EVERYTHING IS AUTOMATIC!

All you have to do is pop it into your USB port and let it do it's thing. As soon as it's done, you'll be presented with ALL of your files, backed up and organized! And there's a TON of cool features on this thing, too. Check this out:

Easy Viewer: open this up, and you can view ALL of your saved files the same way they were saved. You'll know exactly what you're looking at and exactly where it is!

Easy Music: This is COMPLETELY iTunes compatible! Take your iPhone, iPod or iPad, and this copies ALL of your media, backs it up, and automatically places it in your iTunes library! It's always there, and it's always backed up!

Multiple Computer Backups: Go ahead and use it with any and all of your computers. From your work PC to your home computer - Windows OR Mac - doesn't matter, this can do it!

Observe the image below. This is what you're presented with after ClickFree automatically backs up all of your files. Remember, this starts as soon as you stick it into your computer. You don't have to do ANYTHING to get to this step:

A MASSIVE 500GB with Maximum 256 Bit Security!

Think about that - 500gb is more space than most computers have! You're not going to be running out of space any time soon, that's for sure!

And since you have so much space, you can EASILY use this for multiple computers - from your work PC to your home computer! In fact, it was designed with multiple computer use in mind. And don't worry about security, either. Check this out!

Have no fear - your files and media are protected by a 256 Bit security feature!

No matter what, even if this hard drive was stolen, there's ZERO chance that anyone will be able to hack it and get into your files. It's 100% worry free MAXIMUM security!

Computers 101

Adil from India writes:

I wonder if there is a Free software program which will write as I speak into the microphone – like a dictaphone, but it writes instead of recording, so it can be edited. I have a lot of typing to do as my job entails preparing lot of documents, SOPs etc. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Adil, thanks for the great question!

Actually, you already HAVE free software that will dictate as you speak. Did I just blow your mind?

For several of the last iterations, Windows has included ways to make their system more accessible for people with physical challenges. In Windows XP and Vista these were called "Accessibility Options". In 7, the name has been changed to "Ease of Access". These assistants include different screen displays (such as high contrast themes), a screen magnifier, and a "narrator" that will tell you what's happening on your screen.

What we're really interested in, though, is speech recognition.

All About Siri

You may not believe it, but the iPhone 4S comes equipped with a personal assistant. Its name is Siri, and your wish is literally its command. Siri understands your commands in plain English and will help you type a message, create a reminder, find a restaurant, and much more. It talks back too!

Let's explore how to use Siri and unlock its extraordinary potential.

To begin, let's make sure Siri is enabled on your iPhone 4S.

From the home screen, select the Settings icon, followed by General, and Siri.

Make sure both the Siri switch and the Raise to Speak switch are set in the On position.

From The Archives

Meghan asks:

My Windows XP start menu is quite large. When I go to it, it's displayed in one long column. Can I change that in any way?

Hi Meghan! I have an incredibly large start menu myself. Depending on how many applications you have, you may benefit from more columns.

Here's how to do it:

First, pick any empty area in your taskbar and right-click, then left-click on Properties.

Amanda's Coolsite

SmartyPig

My sister was looking for a way to save money that would allow her to not only save money on her own, but allow people to contribute to her account. I knew there had to be something like that out there, so I started searching the internet.

I found SmartyPig.

Basically, SmartyPig is the grown up version of a piggy bank. It allows you to save for specific financial goals with a competitive interest rate for free. I'd recommend that you start your visit by clicking the green Learn More button and then watching the video on that page which explains how the site works. Notice the categories that have appeared under "What is SmartyPig" on the left menu. You'll find information on Creating Goals, Reaching Goals Faster, Cash Back Savings, Cash Reward Cards and Retailer Gift Cards.

Next, I'd suggest that you click the FAQ link at the top of the page. You'll then be looking at all the questions you probably have about how SmartyPig works. Whenever you're looking at a service that is going to handle your money, I recommend fully checking it out to look for any hidden fees or finance charges etc. For example, with SmartyPig you'll learn that if you use your savings to contribute to someone else's saving goal that there is a fee of 2.9% – this is fully disclosed in the FAQ, but it is good to know beforehand.

So, in a nutshell how does it work? You register for your free account, create a savings goal, setup when and how much money you want to contribute automatically monthly, and then you start saving money. When you reach your goal, the automatic transfers stop and you can close out your account (transfer the money back to your bank account). You can also or you can opt to get a retail gift card (this would be very helpful if you're saving for electronics, household appliances, or travel) and receive an incentive for doing so. Check out the Retailer Gift Card page for more details on that. They even offer great tutorials to help you get started.

Your friends can contribute to your goals, too! So, for example, if I set up a SmartyPig account and chose to save for a goal like a trip to Europe after I graduate next May, my friends and family could donate money towards my goal. You can also set your goal to completely private so that no one but you can see it. I like privacy settings like this where I, as the user, have complete control over who sees what publically.

This is a great tool for goal-oriented savings! Check it out today!

Lower Falls Morning Light

So, I'm at the base of Lower Falls in Hocking Hills State Park and I'm running out of time. In fact, I shouldn't even be here – the plan was to break camp and head home that morning – no photos.

However, it had rained the day before and many of the falls – including this one – actually had too much water going over them. I also knew from experience that (more)
