Quick Tip

Fern from WV writes:

Why do I keep getting the message that my Windows 7 is not genuine? How can I fix this? It came on my Gateway computer that I bought in Dec. 2010.

Windows 7 includes a Windows Genuine Advantage checker which verifies that your copy of Windows is legally licensed. However, sometimes there is an error which causes Windows to forget it is registered – but there is an easy fix.

The first step is to look at the side of your computer, or on the bottom for a Windows Authenticity Label. This label will show your Windows 7 serial number. Write down the serial number.

windows product key

Once the serial number is written down, click the Start button and in the search box type: Activate Windows

In this window you can enter in your product key and proceed with activation. You may need to click the Change product key button and type in the product key again. Once activated, you should receive the below message and will no longer be prompted that your copy is not genuine.

windowsactivated

Hope this helps!

Raul from Puerto Rico asks:

This may sound ridiculous, but I'm still a novice when it comes to e-mail. For example, what are attachments?

Hey, Raul – it's not a ridiculous questions at all – hopefully this offers some insight.

An e-mail attachment is a file you include with an e-mail. For example, let's say you have a text document or picture you want to share with someone. You can "attach" this document to an e-mail and send it off to them.

How do you attach it? Usually via a little paper clip icon in your e-mail software. Just click it and you should get a dialog box that lets you navigate to, and attach, the file of your choice.

And no, it doesn't take the file off your computer, it only sends a copy of it.

A word of caution though. Keep an eye on the size of the file you're sending. Your recipient may not appreciate downloading a 200 megabyte file.

CLICKFREE IS THE EASIEST BACKUP SYSTEM IN THE WORLD!

No Drivers - No Setup - Just 100% Plug & Play Automatic Backups!

256 Bit Password Protection - Multiple Computer Support!

A Sad Fact, But a True One....

Hard drives are sensitive, complex mechanical devices. No matter what, 100% of the time, they will eventually fail - causing a crash. This can be a disaster.

What will you do when this happens? Sure, you can pull out your program CD's (like your Windows program) and reinstall your operating system. But what about ALL OF YOUR DATA? You know, pictures, videos, files, settings...the list goes on and on. If your system crashes, I've got news for you: that stuff is gone for good!

Now consider this: there's hundreds of millions of computer users out there, and 80% of them do NOT back their files up. Why? Because until now, backing everything up was a long and complicated process. You'd have to find specific things to back up, deal with directories, file extensions, etc. IF you were able to figure it out, there's no way you'd have the time to back up every single thing. I mean...you've gotta sleep sometime, right?

These problems are over for good! We've found an automatic backup hard drive that does ALL of that work for you! Did I mention it's automatic? Oh...well guess what? IT'S ALL AUTOMATIC!

The ClickFree Automatic Backup Hard Drive is here!

NO software. NO set up. NO time consuming steps. All you have to do is PLUG IT IN and it AUTOMATICALLY finds, scans and saves ALL of your files - you don't have to do anything!

It's a MASSIVE 500gb of AUTOMATIC back-up space!

It's USB 3.0 and FULLY compatible with USB 2.0: If you're working from a new USB 3.0 machine, you're not gonna believe the speed! And if you're working with USB 2.0 like most of us, don't worry - this is FULLY compatible and gives you the absolute maximum speed possible! It's the best of both worlds, and prepared for the future!

EXTREMELY user friendly: it'll even categorize your music, pictures, videos and documents into separate areas for maximum organization! Oh, and it works on multiple computers - you've gotta check this thing out!

Think about everything you keep on your computer: TONS of photos. Your ENTIRE music collection. Work documents, important files and sensitive information. And don't forget about those vacation and family gathering videos. You've gotta back that stuff up!

The ClickFree Automatic Backup Hard Drive Makes it EASY!

If You Think it's Hard or Time Consuming - YOU'RE WRONG!

Seriously, this thing couldn't be any easier to use: EVERYTHING IS AUTOMATIC!

All you have to do is pop it into your USB port and let it do it's thing. As soon as it's done, you'll be presented with ALL of your files, backed up and organized! And there's a TON of cool features on this thing, too. Check this out:

Easy Viewer: open this up, and you can view ALL of your saved files the same way they were saved. You'll know exactly what you're looking at and exactly where it is!

Easy Music: This is COMPLETELY iTunes compatible! Take your iPhone, iPod or iPad, and this copies ALL of your media, backs it up, and automatically places it in your iTunes library! It's always there, and it's always backed up!

Multiple Computer Backups: Go ahead and use it with any and all of your computers. From your work PC to your home computer - Windows OR Mac - doesn't matter, this can do it!

Observe the image below. This is what you're presented with after ClickFree automatically backs up all of your files. Remember, this starts as soon as you stick it into your computer. You don't have to do ANYTHING to get to this step:

A MASSIVE 500GB with Maximum 256 Bit Security!

Think about that - 500gb is more space than most computers have! You're not going to be running out of space any time soon, that's for sure!

And since you have so much space, you can EASILY use this for multiple computers - from your work PC to your home computer! In fact, it was designed with multiple computer use in mind. And don't worry about security, either. Check this out!

Have no fear - your files and media are protected by a 256 Bit security feature!

No matter what, even if this hard drive was stolen, there's ZERO chance that anyone will be able to hack it and get into your files. It's 100% worry free MAXIMUM security!

STOP: DO NOT Touch That Soap Pump!

You Think You're About to Clean Your Hands...

But That Thing is FILTHY and Crawling With Billions of Bacteria!

YOU NEED THIS TOUCH-FREE SOAP DISPENSER RIGHT NOW!

Uses Motion Sensor Technology To Automatically Dispense Soap!

No Touching! No Pumping! No Germs!

Just Wave Your Hand for the Perfect Amount of Soap!

Perfect for the Bathroom AND Kitchen!

It's the DIRTIEST Thing in Your Home...

And you're about to touch it! Think about it. What's the very first thing everybody touches immediately following a trip to the toilet? It's that soap pump, and it's literally CRAWLING with billions of dangerous bacterium!

Lucky for all of us, we live in the age of technology. We don't have to be stuck using primitive methods any longer! This soap dispenser uses motion sensor technology that senses when you stick your hand under it, and it immediately dispenses the perfect amount of your favorite soap!

Go to the restroom in any restaurant these days, and you'll see it. Automatic soap dispensers and touch-free hands dryers. Makes sense, right?

So doesn't it make sense to keep something like that in your home? Thought so!

It's Touch-Free and Motion Sensored!

It's a simple idea that can save you and your family from getting SERIOUSLY ill. Just fill it up with your favorite soap, set it on the sink, and don't worry about it!

Every time someone uses the restroom, instead of adding to the germs on the soap pump, putting themselves and others at serious risk, all they have to do is stick their hand under it and let it dispense the perfect amount of soap. It's that simple!

The best part? You can use any liquid soap you want, so pick your favorite! Just fill it up and walk away! it holds 12 ounces, so it's going to be a long time before you have to fill it up again.

An added bonus is that it dispenses a set amount every time, so it'll cut down on waste!

It's SIMPLE to Operate and Runs on Batteries!

How's it work? Using INFRARED TECHNOLOGY! It picks up motion when you stick your hand under it and automatically dispenses the soap. You never have to touch it!

As you can see from the image, this is a pretty simple mechanism. The sensor lies on the underside of the pump, right where you'll put your hand. Using an infrared sensor, it picks up the motion and out comes the soap. And as you can see from the other images, there's a clear window running right up the middle of the dispenser that shows you how much soap you have left. No over-filling, no messes!

It's cordless! That makes it perfect for any and all of your sinks. Stick the batteries in and you don't have to worry about them for a long time. This thing is efficient!

Keep your family protected from dangerous bacteria 365 days a year!

A Deal You Won't Find Anywhere Else...

I'm sure you expected this, but we've got the best price you're going to find anywhere else! Look around if you'd like, but you'd better hurry because at our price, this is going to go fast! Today, get your Touch-Free Soap Dispenser for just $18.97 with FREE US SHIPPING!

Barbara from Florida writes:

Is there any way to block Facebook posts regarding games and game requests?

Besides being a monumental waste of time, Facebook game notifications and requests gunk up your feed and make it more difficult to view the posts and comments you actually want to see. Since switching to the "Timeline" view and adding the extra ticker feed, game notifications have been lessened, but they can still be a problem if you have several friends who are prolific app users.

If constant Farmville requests have you fuming and an endless stream of Gang Wars notifications have you ready to pull out your own gat, there are several ways to stop all the unwanted junk in your feed.

Adil from India writes:

I wonder if there is a Free software program which will write as I speak into the microphone – like a dictaphone, but it writes instead of recording, so it can be edited. I have a lot of typing to do as my job entails preparing lot of documents, SOPs etc. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Adil, thanks for the great question!

Actually, you already HAVE free software that will dictate as you speak. Did I just blow your mind?

For several of the last iterations, Windows has included ways to make their system more accessible for people with physical challenges. In Windows XP and Vista these were called "Accessibility Options". In 7, the name has been changed to "Ease of Access". These assistants include different screen displays (such as high contrast themes), a screen magnifier, and a "narrator" that will tell you what's happening on your screen.

What we're really interested in, though, is speech recognition.

iPad Save Images

At first glance, it doesn't seem all too easy to save images on your iPad, but thankfully the solution is far easier than you think!

So next time you want to save an image, simply tap your finger and hold on the desired image – a dialog box will pop up and prompt you to save the image.

Then check your photos, and voila!

Add a Settings Key to the Onscreen Android Keyboard

Adjusting the settings on an Android onscreen keyboard is done–surprisingly–in Android keyboard settings, where many optional features are available (vibrate and sound, auto-correct, and auto-capitalization, etc.). One way to access these settings, is by meandering through the following series of menus; Settings>Language & input (or Language & keyboard)>Android keyboard. Or, on at least some models, there's a shortcut available to the settings through one of the keys. In addition–again on certain models–a settings key can be added to the keyboard for even quicker and easier access.

Note: This is displayed in Android 4.0.

Long press the microphone key and slide to the Settings button.

Creating Macros in MS Excel

Microsoft Excel is the one of the most popular spreadsheet programs used worldwide. It has a variety of features such as data storage, creating reports and charts, using mathematical functions, performing statistical analysis, ability to connect to databases, making use of pivot tables, V-lookups etc. One such very useful feature within Microsoft Excel is the ability to make use of "macros".

What is a Macro?

A macro is a recording of the commands and actions which are used in order to perform a task. Whenever you find that there is a particular task or series of tasks which you perform often, it may make sense to save the sequence of tasks as a macro for reuse later. Thus the applications of Macros to perform frequently occurring repetitive tasks can help free up your time to be spent more productively on doing something else instead.

Meghan asks:

My Windows XP start menu is quite large. When I go to it, it's displayed in one long column. Can I change that in any way?

Hi Meghan! I have an incredibly large start menu myself. Depending on how many applications you have, you may benefit from more columns.

Here's how to do it:

First, pick any empty area in your taskbar and right-click, then left-click on Properties.

The Pocket Mod

Up until I found this site, I had been keeping track of my grocery list on my smart phone, but then juggling between the list and the calculator got really annoying, so I started looking for a better way. Enter the Pocket Mod!

The Pocket Mod is a personal organizer that you can customize and put together to suit your specific needs. On the main page you'll find a description of how it works, why it is neat, and a good video on how to fold it. When you're ready to make your own, just click the Create a Pocket Mod link at the top right side of the page. I turn mine in a multi-page grocery list! Once folded, it is the perfect size to keep with my smart phone and go back forth between the calculator and list.

So once the application loads, you can select what type of page you want to make, then drag and drop it into one of the pages of the pocket mod. Since I make grocery lists, I click on Organization and then select Simple List (yes I know there is a shopping list in the folder, but this list you can customize! Just click the little tool button above the right corner of the list and you can type in your items), then I fill it out with my grocery list, and when I'm finished click on the list and drag it over one of the blank slots on the right. Once you've filled all the pages of the pocket mod, print it out, then reference the folding video to put it together.

I love this site! This is such a functional application, go check it out!

Names of Animals

My roommate and I were having a discussion about goats the other day, and collectively we wondered what you call a group of goats. Were they a herd? A flock? A gang? A mob? I've learned over the years that you can never assume what any group of animals is called, so I decided to look it up and found this lovely chart with a listing of animal names – not only for groups of animals, but also what the male and female of each species is called.

It turns out that a group of goats can be called a herd, a tribe, or even a trip.

The site is easy to use – just scroll down the chart to find the animal you are looking for – they are listed in alphabetical order. The chart has columns for the name of the Animal, Male, Female, Baby, and Group. Once you've found the animal you were looking for, you can just read across the chart to see what the appropriate name is for each category. If you want to learn more about the animal you're looking up, just click on the animal's name and you'll be whisked away to a page of information about it.

I clicked on goat and learned that they've been domesticated for at least 10,000 years, can live for 9 to 12 years in wild, and that both male and female goats sport horns and beards! And that's just a small portion of the information served up on the Goat page. I think that this would be a great site to visit with your kids if they are interested in animals, because they can learn all about different animals with just a click.
