Quick Tip

Jill from AK asks:

How do I change my Windows 7 background color to better match my wallpaper? It looks awful right now!

Ah, aesthetics! You work so hard to make that Windows wallpaper as cool as possible, but the color of the background just ruins the composition!

Thankfully it's easy to change the background color to whatever hue you like, Jill!

Let's check it out:

First, right-click your desktop and go to Personalize. Now click Desktop Background at the bottom…

In the next window, click Change background color, located under the Picture position heading.

POP! – the Windows color picker opens up and you can choose whatever hue suits your background image's mood!

Stylin'!

Bob from FL writes:

I use a flash drive to back up all my data and I leave it plugged in all the time. Does leaving it plugged in all the time wear it out quicker, or should I be plugging it in only when I need to copy something to it?

This is great question, Bob – especially since we've all been conditioned from the days of mechanical hard drives that the longer a mechanical device is running, the shorter its remaining lifespan is. The good news is this isn't true for flash drives, as the wear and tear comes from when data is being written to or read off of the device, not sitting idle.

One reason that it might be a good idea to disconnect the drive is in the event of electrical surge. If a surge is powerful enough to damage the components inside of your computer, it may also damage anything connected to the computer at the time. If your hard drive is fried in a lightning strike and your flash drive goes with it, you may have no backup left.

EVEN COMES WITH A WALLET SIZED CARRY CASE!

A Sad Fact, But a True One....

Hard drives are sensitive, complex mechanical devices. No matter what, 100% of the time, they will eventually fail - causing a crash. This can be a disaster.

What will you do when this happens? Sure, you can pull out your program CD's (like your Windows program) and reinstall your operating system. But what about ALL OF YOUR DATA? You know, pictures, videos, files, settings...the list goes on and on. If your system crashes, I've got news for you: that stuff is gone for good!

Now consider this: there's hundreds of millions of computer users out there, and 80% of them do NOT back their files up. Why? Because until now, backing everything up was a long and complicated process. You'd have to find specific things to back up, deal with directories, file extensions, etc. IF you were able to figure it out, there's no way you'd have the time to back up every single thing. I mean...you've gotta sleep sometime, right?

These problems are over for good! We've found an automatic backup drive that does ALL of that work for you! Did I mention it's automatic? Oh...well guess what? IT'S ALL AUTOMATIC!

The ClickFree Automatic Backup Hard Drive is here!

NO software. NO set up. NO time consuming steps. All you have to do is PLUG IT IN and it AUTOMATICALLY finds, scans and saves ALL of your files.

Ultra Durable Aluminum Construction WITH a Wallet Sized Carry Case...

It's Just the Size of a Credit Card!

Have you noticed that all of the high end computer manufacturers are using aluminum these days? Take Apple, for example, with their MacBook series. That's because aluminum is durable and will protect the sensitive internal parts while keeping them cool.

This back-up drive is made from that same aluminum, and you'll notice the quality right away. It's as thin and small as a credit card, but UNBELIVEABLY strong and durable!

Take it everywhere without worry: it comes with a high quality wallet style carry case! Stick it in the case and you'll be carrying around your automatic back-up system in comfort, with full protection!

If You Think it's Hard or Time Consuming - YOU'RE WRONG!

Seriously, this thing couldn't be any easier to use: EVERYTHING IS AUTOMATIC!

All you have to do is pop it into your USB port and let it do it's thing. As soon as it's done, you'll be presented with ALL of your files, backed up and organized! And there's a TON of cool features on this thing, too. Check this out:

Easy Viewer: open this up, and you can view ALL of your saved files the same way they were saved. You'll know exactly what you're looking at and exactly where it is!

Easy Music: This is COMPLETELY iTunes compatible! Take your iPhone, iPod or iPad, and this copies ALL of your media, backs it up, and automatically places it in your iTunes library! It's always there, and it's always backed up!

Multiple Computer Backups: Go ahead and use it with any and all of your computers. From your work PC to your home computer - Windows OR Mac - doesn't matter, this can do it!

Computers 101

Ashkan from Iran writes:

How can I create non-repeated numbers between 100 and 300 in Excel?

Hi, Ashkan. Thanks for the great question.

What you're talking about here is creating a "unique series" – and there's actually a pretty easy way to do it. You didn't specify any parameters in your query, so I'm guessing that you're just talking about a series by ones (100, 101, 102…298, 299, 300) right? So what you do is enter the numeral 100 at cell 1A. Then, in cell 2A enter "=a1+1″ without the quotes. This will give you the numeral 101 in cell A2.

Chuck from CA asks:

What is USB 3.0, exactly? Should I care?

Heck of a question, Chuck!

With new devices coming out every day, there is a need for a faster technology to transfer data to (and from) your computer. Some devices, such as Blu-ray players and very large external hard drives, simply need to transfer data faster than what USB 2.0 is currently capable of.

3.0 cable

So, How Fast is USB 3.0?
USB 3.0 is up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0. For example, if you have a 1GB flash drive full of music, it would take 33 seconds to transfer the contents to your computer using USB 2.0. Using USB 3.0, it will only take just over 3 seconds!! Another example is if you have an HD movie that is 25GB, it would take 13 minutes on usb 2.0. It will only take 70 seconds with USB 3.0. That's pretty fast, wouldn't you say?

Okay – Then What happens to my USB 2.0 stuff?
No need to worry here. The makers of USB 3.0 made sure that all of the USB 2.0 devices will work on USB 3.0 ports. So if you get a new computer that has USB 3.0, you will still be able to plug in your 2.0 equipment. Remember that you will only get 2.0 speeds from the 2.0 devices, but at least they will work without costly upgrades.

Here's to our high-speed future!

On The Move

Neil from England writes:

I am coming up to the end of my mobile phone contract and will soon be upgrading. I currently use the iPhone, and while happy with it, but I am thinking along the Android line also. Would it be possible to do a article of the pro's and con's of both iOS and Android?

The Android vs. iOS debate has blossomed into quite the war among sides. So, what's the deal? Is Android really the blissful open enviroment that lets people truly customize the device – or is it a virus-ridden monster which has more junk then quality? Is iOS the simple beautiful, functional device that just does what you expect – or is it horrible, crippled and limited by "big brother" at Apple? The answer to everything above is Yes.

But which points really matter?

Tawkon: Stay Safe from Mobile Radiation

The smartphone has made our life even more worthwhile, but technology has its side effects too. Ever since the device became more portable (and literally "handheld",) it has been posed as a potential health hazard, due to the electromagnetic radiation it creates during a call or data network access. The fact worth taking note is that according to the WHO (World Health Organization), this effect is possibly carcinogenic. Do not freak out yet, because it's your smartphone that can help you alleviate this radiation effect.

Save as PDF Button for MS Office 2007 and 2010

The other day we took a quick look at the difference between Office 2007 and Office 2010 when it comes to easily saving a file in PDF format.

Today I'd like to look at a way you may even like better – and this one works on both versions!

What we're going to do is to look at adding a button to the Quick Access Toolbar that will let us choose a file format for saving before the Save As dialog box opens and without using the Office Button or File tab.

Maybe you'd appreciate a button that works like this:

Monet 2010

I can remember vividly falling in love with Monet's art in my first French class during my sophomore year of high school. The cover of our text book had a picture of Monet's "Waterlilies" on it, along with Seurat's "Sunday in the Park", the French Flag, and snapshots of the people of France. I've loved Impressionism ever since, so when I stumbled upon this site I knew I had to share it with you.

Warning – the site may take a long time to load, but it is completely worth it. The site also plays music – a piano composition – and that's how I know it's loaded, although you can turn it off by clicking the music note at the very bottom right side of the page.

Once the site loads, you have three paths you can take. They are Gallery, Journey, and Practical Informations. I would highly recommend that you click Journey and go on a special digital experience through Monet's work.

Journey – once it loads, pull the glass jar down so that it spills to begin your trip. Through the spilled inky water, Monet's art will start appearing. If you get stuck at any point in your journey, look at the top right of the page for instructions on how to move forward – it's completely interactive! At any time throughout your journey you can also click on See the Picture You Have Viewed to check out the art that you've seen more closely. Or, if you get tired, (don't want to wait for it to load) you can head back to the main page with the Return to Homepage link at the top left of the page. I thought it was well worth the wait though.

Gallery – if you'd like a more traditional journey, or just want to skip right to the art, check out the Gallery, which features the art of Monet divided up by the year of the work. Click the series you'd like to check out more fully by clicking on a painting. What I adore about checking the art out in this way, is that you get to read about the time period it was created in, the technique used, and get tons of Monet facts.

Practical Informations (I'm guessing the extra "S" is a translation error) – explains what the exhibit is about, what the online portion is attempting to do, and where the event was held.

This is a fun and inventive digital journey that allows you to experience Monet's artwork in a unique way. Check it out today!
