Quick Tip

Todd from MI asks:

I read all the time about "open source" this and "open source" that. What the heck does "open source" mean, anyways?

Hey, Todd – good question!

Basically, the term "open source" is used to describe a program or app where the author(s) gives the public access to the source code. Although some companies aren't thrilled with this concept, many terrific pieces of software are open source (the Linux operating system, Mozilla Firefox and the Ogg Vorbis sound file format come to mind).

Since the code is freely distributed, the software is also (generally) free as well. If you want support, that will sometimes carry a fee – the author has to pay the rent somehow, right? That said, there are usually lots of resources out there for large, open source programs. Your friendly neighborhood search engine can help with that and most open source programs have a Wiki to reference as well!

The idea behind writing software like this is you get input, code, and improvements from lots (hundreds? thousands?) of different programmers. Not an easy task for a single company to copy. As such, the program evolves rapidly and tends to have fewer bugs (and that's always good).

Just imagine if Windows was open source…

Do You HATE Your Keyboard?

Can't....See...

THE LETTERS?!

Typing Just Became Possible Again...

WITH THE BIG BRIGHT KEYBOARD!

HUGE Black Letters on Green Keys:

THE PERFECT CONTRAST!

Standard Alpha Numeric Keyboard With 12 Function Keys...

USB POWERED PLUG & PLAY SIMPLICITY!

Well it's About Time...

Whether you have 20/20 vision or wear coke-bottle glasses that make your eyes look like baseballs, the letters and numbers on those keyboards are just TOO SMALL TO SEE! It's so annoying!

All this technology, all these big improvements to computers...and they've never really done anything to make it easier to type. Don't they understand that some of us sit at a computer all day? Don't they know that some of us don't have the genetics of Superman, enabling us to see tiny, microscopic things with our naked eyes?

Someone understands, and they've done something about it! It's a standard alpha numeric keyboard (the exact set up you're likely used to), but with MASSIVE letters on those keys and a color scheme to make it simple to see!

BIG Letters + Contrasting Colors = Perfect Keyboard Vision!

Most keyboards have tiny letters and numbers on the keys. Why? There's a ton of real estate left on each of those keys to make the letters bigger! It's just common sense, right? Well, apparently not...

Apparently, they want us to strain our eyes for eight hours every day. Maybe the manufacturers of these keyboards are in business with the optometrists and major eye glasses companies...

The letters and numbers on each of these keys are MASSIVE! You'd have to be legally blind to not be able to see them...and even then, you should be able to make them out! And it's not just the huge letters that make such a difference: it's the colors!

Bright green keys. Dark black letters. It's the perfect contrast! You can't go wrong!

Simple to Set Up: Plug & Play!

As you can see from the image, there's NOTHING complicated about this thing. It's a keyboard with one cord attached to it. That cord plugs directly into your USB port and you're ready to use it! No drivers, no set up, just 100% plug and play simplicity!

A few facts:

Standard QWERTY set up!
USB powered for plug and play simplicity!
Flip-up legs for the PERFECT angle!

It's also PC and MAC compatible, so it works on everything!

Things Can Be WAY Easier for a VERY Small Price!

Some places would charge a small fortune for something this cool. But not us! Today, get your BIG BRIGHT KEYBOARD for just $21.97 with FREE US SHIPPING!

On The Move

Adding Words to the Android Dictionary

Android phones contain an extensive dictionary, but there will still be occasions when a word in a user's lexicon won't be recognized. These may be proper names (or improper names), trade terms, or words in languages other than the default language. There are several ways to add words to this dictionary; some more convenient than others. However, as it is with all things Android, the method for each device, model, and version may differ (at least slightly) from others.

In Android 4.0, one quick way is to type the word, and then tap the displayed word in the suggestions that appear above the keyboard, and tap it again to save it to the dictionary.

kevin_android_dictionary_7

Another easy method is to type the word (or words) into a message, and tap an unrecognized word to bring up the menu displayed below. Although some Android versions will require a long press (press and hold) on the word to reveal this menu.

Remove iTunes 10 Checkboxes and Source Icons

Here's a quick one for all the iTunes users out there who have upgraded to version 10 of Apple's music software and want to clean up their interface a bit. Since the early versions of iTunes, there have always been checkboxes next to song titles used for selecting and deselecting songs. Well, what if you've never used them? Why keep something around you may accidentally uncheck?

Voila! No more checkboxes!

Amanda's Coolsite

An Optical Illusion

I adore optical illusions, which you may have noticed from the sites I've shared in the past. Well, I found an awesome site dedicated to optical illusions that I couldn't wait to share with you. I really liked it because it isn't just same optical illusions that you're used to seeing, but modern interpretations of illusion that will have your jaw dropping!

The site is easy to navigate because it is set up blog-style, so just scroll down the page and prepare to be wowed. You can also use the Older Posts link at the bottom of the page to see the previous entries.

Each entry offers background on the illusion being featured as well as an example of it. They also often include links to where you can see more of that type of illusion, or to previous entries of the same kind of illusion.

I really loved the most recent post when I was there. It was the Lego Terracotta Army – a sidewalk chalk drawing of Lego people as the famous Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang. It probably helps that I've been obsessed with sidewalk chalk since I was a little kid (and then seeing Mary Poppins) didn't help matters any. I also loved the video of the Checker Shadow Illusion, and the Fact/Fiction Ambigram (I saw Faction at first). The Terrace by David MacDonald was also really well done.

My suggestion is to just dive in and start going through the illusions; but take a break if your eyes start to hurt. Some of the black and white or black and bright yellow ones hurt my eyes after a long viewing.

This is an awesome site dedicated to optical illusions, go check it out!

Lower Falls Morning Light

So, I'm at the base of Lower Falls in Hocking Hills State Park and I'm running out of time. In fact, I shouldn't even be here – the plan was to break camp and head home that morning – no photos.

However, it had rained the day before and many of the falls – including this one – actually had too much water going over them. I also knew from experience that (more)

Fawn Peeking Through The Brush

OK, so we're in Custer State Park in SD in search of some cool critters when we spot this pair of fawns. One had lost her spots, but this little gal still had a few left. The brush was thick and the light was fading so it wouldn't be long before we were forced to (more)
