| Having trouble viewing parts or all of the newsletter? View the entire newsletter here! Bob from FL writes: I use a flash drive to back up all my data and I leave it plugged in all the time. Does leaving it plugged in all the time wear it out quicker, or should I be plugging it in only when I need to copy something to it? This is great question, Bob especially since we've all been conditioned from the days of mechanical hard drives that the longer a mechanical device is running, the shorter its remaining lifespan is. The good news is this isn't true for flash drives, as the wear and tear comes from when data is being written to or read off of the device, not sitting idle. One reason that it might be a good idea to disconnect the drive is in the event of electrical surge. If a surge is powerful enough to damage the components inside of your computer, it may also damage anything connected to the computer at the time. If your hard drive is fried in a lightning strike and your flash drive goes with it, you may have no backup left. ~Tim Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

What will you do when this happens? Sure, you can pull out your program CD's (like your Windows program) and reinstall your operating system. But what about ALL OF YOUR DATA? How can I create non-repeated numbers between 100 and 300 in Excel? Hi, Ashkan. Thanks for the great question. What you're talking about here is creating a "unique series" and there's actually a pretty easy way to do it. You didn't specify any parameters in your query, so I'm guessing that you're just talking about a series by ones (100, 101, 102 298, 299, 300) right? So what you do is enter the numeral 100 at cell 1A. Then, in cell 2A enter "=a1+1″ without the quotes. This will give you the numeral 102 in cell A2. (Want these tips in their entirety? Tom from CA asks: When saving a picture, Windows always calls it a bitmap. How can I change it so it saves as a jpeg? The real question here isn't how your computer is SAVING the picture, rather in what format the picture was UPLOADED. Many times, website creators will use .bmp rather than .jpg or .jpeg, simply because the quality of the picture is higher. A bitmap (.bmp) is an uncompressed photo, whereas a jpeg is a compressed format, which means some quality sacrifice. It may not be obvious to the naked eye, but it IS there. Your best bet is to save a picture like this in its original format and then use a photo editing program to save it in whatever your preferred format is. I like jpeg because, although it takes up less space than .bmp, it is still a good quality image. Here's a .bmp of a mandrill that I found through Google images. Read the rest over at Worldstart! IDEAL FOR USE ON BEDS, COUCHES, BENCHES - ANYWHERE! Comfort is an Understatement - This Thing is AMAZING. 14'' Aluminum Top Disperses Heat and Keeps Your Laptop COOL! Stiff Back, Sore Wrists... So you're trying out a lapdesk. This is a sensitive concept that, when not engineered the correct way, can yield horrendous results. You took a chance, and it blew up in your face: that thing sucks! It sits flat, isn't adjustable, and it makes your laptop fans work extra hard - and it's getting HOT. It's also bulky and heavy. You feel absolutely ridiculous carrying that ugly chunk of cheap plastic around. You've just wasted your money. Actually, you traded your cash for a sore, stiff back and sore wrists from trying to use this piece of junk. You've given up. You're out of options. UNTIL YOU CAME ACROSS THIS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT LAPDESK! Seriously, this thing covers ALL the bases: comfort, functionality, ergonomics, portability...I could go on and on. In fact, I'm not even sure where to start - so I'll just say this now and let you decide: there has NEVER been a lapdesk quite like this one at ANY price! Check this thing out! First Thing's First: It Can Be Used ANYWHERE... Of course, it's FULLY ADJUSTABLE! That means that you can have it at the full length, say if you were sitting at the couch...or folded all the way down for resting it on your lap! Basically, this lapdesk can be used just like a portable DESK can be - the main difference is that this is adjustable and it folds down to a size small enough to stow in a laptop bag! Heat Dispersing Aluminum Top! Fans? FORGET ABOUT 'EM! The designers of this thing used technology to their advantage! See, when your laptop gets hot, it starts and ends with the bottom. Your fans eventually kick on to cool it down, but often times this just isn't enough. Too much heat and boom - you fry your laptop. The top of this lapdesk, where your laptop sits, is made of aluminum. Scientifically, this metal allows heat to distribute throughout the contraption. Basically, it absorbs the heat from your laptop and distributes it throughout it's surface area. The end result is a cool, sturdy, smooth running laptop! Maximum Portability - Fold it Down and Carry it Everywhere! No matter where you go, you can now have a complete DESK to use with your laptop! Amazing Quality. Stunning Price!
