Quick Tip

Windows 7 Math Input Panel

Here's another one of those didn't-know-it-existed-until-I-clicked-it-by-accident tools in Windows 7.

It's called the Math Input Panel.

To access it, simply click Start, and in the Search Box that appears above, type in Math Input Panel.

The Window should look like this:

Now, I'm not a math whiz, so I'll let the fine folks at Microsoft explain what it's used for.

"Math Input Panel uses the math recognizer that's built into Windows 7 to recognize handwritten math expressions. You can then insert the recognized math into a word-processing or computational program. "

Hmm…sounds useful!

Computers 101

Maggie from CA writes:

I would like to update my USB ports to 3.0. After researching online for a 4 port USB 3.0 card, I find that prices vary from $20 – $100, depending on the brand. Is one brand of card better than another?

USB 3.0 is the newest standard of USB specification, which allows devices made to work with USB 3.0 operate far faster then the same device would over a USB 2.0 connection. USB 3.0 add-on cards are available for desktop PCs, but how do you decide which one to buy?

A few things to consider:

How many USB 3.0 ports do you get? Some add-on cards will give you 1 USB 3.0, some 2 and others 4. You want to determine how many USB 3.0 ports you'll think you will need and buy the card that fits. There is no advantage to using a USB 2.0 device in a 3.0 port, and certain devices like mice and keyboards do not generate enough information to use any of the increase in speed with USB 3.0. Hard Drives, Flash Drives and Cameras are principally what you would want to use with a USB 3.0 port. That is, if the device has a USB 3.0 connector.

Does the card have an internal port or not? Some add-on cards have an internal port and front mounted plate to add a USB 3.0 port to the front of the computer or to connect the internal port to a new cases' internal USB 3.0 port. If this is important to you, get one, but unless the card comes with a new faceplate that fits in a 5 1/4 drive slot, you most likely will not have an internal connector on your computer that would work with USB 3.0.

Will the card fit into your computer? Most USB 3.0 cards require a PCI-Express slot. Make sure your computer has one open PCI-Express slot, since it will not fit into a regular PCI or AGP slot.

The various options will dictate the price, but don't underestimate the value of buying from a company with good support and return policies. Like any computer hardware, it risks the possibility of being defective, and you want to know the manufacturer will stand behind their product.

P.S. WorldStart does offer a USB 3.0 add-on card here: http://store.worldstart.com/product/7416

Powerpoint: Making the Difficult Fonts More Readable

When putting together a document and using some more interesting fonts, I'm sure that you've run into the same thing that I have… the font is cool, what you want, but not very readable for some people.

The design of the font just makes it feel "squished" together.

For you and me, not a problem… after all we chose the font… but for some of our audience it just isn't going to work. The spacing of the characters is just too close together for them to easily read your message.

In other words, a little bit of extra space between characters turns this:

into this:

Definitely a subtle difference, but for some people it makes all the difference.

Helen from Saugerties NY writes:

I was wondering if you have to install all the windows updates? Every time I do I have problems when the computer start up.

Excellent question, Helen. Anyone who's recently used a computer with the Windows operating system on it is most likely familiar with the little pop-up window reminding them to update. Many people tend to ignore these little reminders, which can be detrimental to your computer's health. The Windows patches and updates that are periodically available contain security updates and other pieces of software to help your computer run quicker, function more efficiently and resist attempts by hackers.

The Ultimate Guide to Writing Better Than You Normally Do

Whether I can believe it or not, I often get asked for advice on how people can improve their writing. This past semester, three of the students I was doing academic coaching for asked, and sometimes I get random e-mails about it.

After giving it some thought, I searched the net for a collection of tips that encompassed the advice I normally give and offered more. I found The Ultimate Guide to Writing Better Than You Normally Do posted on McSweeneys.

The great thing about writing is that you can always get better at it. Even published, best-selling authors can improve their writing (you might notice this if you read a series – I sure do!) and I've seen a dramatic improvement in my own writing just over the last four years of actively writing for school and work.

Here you'll find ten tips that will help you write better than you normally do. I agree with all of them, but I'd add the caveat that it is important to recognize that there are different kinds of writing as well: commercial, academic, creative, etc. So you have to know your audience in order to be successful at what you are doing.

The one I have the most trouble following is Don't Procrastinate. I confess, I do all my writing for school at the last minute, I believe I write better under the pressure of getting it done. I even experimented this semester with getting an early start, and got nowhere. So I'm still battling with that one. It applies to my creative writing too, especially since there are no deadlines, I tend to start a story and then get distracted and not come back to it, but I'm working hard this summer to revisit those things and get some of them finished.

If you're a writer, what is it that you struggle with? Did a tip on the list help you? I hope you'll find them as useful as I did!

So, I'm at the base of Lower Falls in Hocking Hills State Park and I'm running out of time. In fact, I shouldn't even be here – the plan was to break camp and head home that morning – no photos.

However, it had rained the day before and many of the falls – including this one – actually had too much water going over them. I also knew from experience that (more)
