In The News 06-29-2012
Your Weekly Update In The World Of Technology

Facebook Changed Something Without Permission… Again.

Typically the In The News article brings you the latest tech news from the week, and this week really isn't an exception, but there was a small shake-up on Facebook that should affect all Facebook users and should be passed along. The good part is that you can actually do something about it this time.

The change happened in the Contact Info section of a user's About page. This is the page that includes your work/education info, birthday, and relationship status as well as your contact information that you've provided. By default, Facebook changed each user's visible email address to their @Facebook.com address (you know, the one you probably don't use or even knew existed until now). If you've chosen a vanity URL, that becomes your email address. For example, Facebook.com/MyName gives you the email address of MyName@Facebook.com. So what if you want to display your previous email address instead, or even no email address at all? Not displaying any email would give you the most privacy. Luckily, it's easy to change.

Facebook Email

First navigate to your About page. The link can be found directly below your profile picture on your profile (assuming you have Timeline now). On the About page, find the box labeled "Contact Info." You'll want to then click on the "Edit" box to the right, the one with the small pencil on it. A box will open up and at the top will be your email addresses. To the far right, you will be able to toggle whether each email is displayed on the page or not. Open circle will show on your Timeline, and the "no" circle symbol will hide the address. Make your selections, then click "Save" at the very bottom of the box. There you go, your email display settings are where you want them, not what Facebook has set.

Bad Facebook, no dinner for you.

Computers 101

Frederick from Trinidad, West-Indies writes:

What is an administrator and what is its function or functions?

You should normally be able to make any change you want to your operating system – it is your computer after all, right? Unfortunately, that's not quite the case. The Windows operating systems actually have two different kinds of accounts: standard and administrator. The administrator account gives you the ability to view and modify critical system files, as well as to make changes that affect all other users on the computer. These two account types are in place to protect your computer so that people can't easily ruin your system by deleting important files or installing virus-infected programs.

When attempting to open certain programs that let you change system settings, such as the registry editor or Microsoft management console, a prompt is first opened on the screen asking if you want to allow the change. If you aren't currently logged into an administrator account, the Windows operating system won't let you open the program or make any changes. You may run into this same problem while attempting to delete certain files or install programs.

To access these programs or install new software, you need to turn your profile into an administrator account. If you aren't currently logged into the profile that you want to grant administrative privileges, open the "Start" menu and click the arrow icon next to the "Shut Down" button. Select "Switch User" and click the name of the profile you want to use.

To access your computer's account options, return to the "Start" menu and click the "Control Panel" button.

In the "Control Panel" menu, click the green heading labeled "User Accounts and Family Settings," which is located at the top-right corner of the window.

Bring up the menu for changing your profile's options by clicking the green "User Accounts" link at the top of the window.

Click the blue link labeled "Change Your Account Type," which is located underneath the "Make Changes To Your User Account" heading.

Change your profile to an administrator account by selecting the "Administrator" radio button and clicking the "Change Account Type" button at the bottom of the window.

In some cases, being logged into an administrator account alone isn't enough to access all aspects of your operating system. Some tools require you to actually specify you want to run the program as an administrator before you will have full access to the software's features. This issue occurs most frequently in Windows Vista, but some overzealous security programs require you to take this step in Windows 7 as well. If a program isn't letting you fully use all its features even while logged in as an administrator, right-click the desktop icon for the program and select the "Run as Administrator" option.

Although using an administrator account is handy and makes it simpler to change system settings, Microsoft recommends that you instead use a standard account for your day-to-day computing. While it may occasionally be less convenient, using a standard account makes it more difficult for spyware or virus infections to get a foothold on your computer.

Tawkon: Stay Safe from Mobile Radiation

The smartphone has made our life even more worthwhile, but technology has its side effects too. Ever since the device became more portable (and literally "handheld",) it has been posed as a potential health hazard, due to the electromagnetic radiation it creates during a call or data network access. The fact worth taking note is that according to the WHO (World Health Organization), this effect is possibly carcinogenic. Do not freak out yet, because it's your smartphone that can help you alleviate this radiation effect.

Reset the Default Save Location in MS Office

When you open a file in one of your MS Office programs, do you find that you're always navigating away from "My Documents" to some other folder?

Ever wish that it would just open up to that location in the first place?

If so, here's the good news… you can set each program to go directly to whatever location you desire, when you go to open a file.

I can honestly say that this is one of the first adjustments I make when "moving in" to a new computer. While I use many different folders to help sort out my files, I usually find that there's one in particular that I use the most, so I set the program to call up that location whenever I open a file.

If it sounds like a good plan to you, here's what you need to know…

Amanda's Coolsite

Incredibox

Drag, drop, and listen – that's just how easy it is to create your own beatbox track at Incredibox. This site is all about sound, so I suggest that you use it at home.

The first time, it may take several minutes for the site to load the application, but it is so worth it! When it has loaded, then it is time for you to sample every sound. Just drag one of the symbols over the beatbox dude and drop it. The dude will then play/make the noise attached to the symbol. Once you've listened to them all, you'll have unlocked the bonus. After you've viewed the bonus video, the next task is to find the right combination to unlock the second bonus.

Don't want to mess around with the bonus content? I sure didn't, I was ready to record my own track! You can start recording as soon as you've played a sound. Just click the button with the circle on it above the application. It won't start recording until you drop in your first sound – and then you can build the sounds right on top of each other. You can also click the beatbox dudes to mute them (the speaker) or give them a solo (the headphones) or get rid of them all together (the x). You have to have a minimum of ten loops, but after that you can stop recording at anytime – just click the record button or click remove on all the beatbox dudes.

When you've finished recording, you'll be given the option of reviewing or sharing your work. I'd suggest reviewing it and making sure you like the way it sounds. If you decide to share, you'll need to fill out the form that comes up after clicking share with your name, the name of your song, and who it is dedicated to. Then it will save your composition to the site, and offer you the ability to share it over Facebook, e-mail, or a link you can embed.

Check out my composition here and then go make an awesome beatbox compositions of your own!

One More Big Deal

The Three Guarantees in Life:

CLICKFREE IS THE EASIEST BACKUP SYSTEM IN THE WORLD!

100% Plug & Play Automatic Backups!

256 Bit Password Protection - Multiple Computer Support!

EVEN COMES WITH A WALLET SIZED CARRY CASE!

A Sad Fact, But a True One....

Hard drives are sensitive, complex mechanical devices. No matter what, 100% of the time, they will eventually fail - causing a crash. This can be a disaster.

What will you do when this happens? Sure, you can pull out your program CD's (like your Windows program) and reinstall your operating system. But what about ALL OF YOUR DATA? You know, pictures, videos, files, settings...the list goes on and on. If your system crashes, I've got news for you: that stuff is gone for good!

Now consider this: there's hundreds of millions of computer users out there, and 80% of them do NOT back their files up. Why? Because until now, backing everything up was a long and complicated process. You'd have to find specific things to back up, deal with directories, file extensions, etc. IF you were able to figure it out, there's no way you'd have the time to back up every single thing. I mean...you've gotta sleep sometime, right?

These problems are over for good! We've found an automatic backup drive that does ALL of that work for you! Did I mention it's automatic? Oh...well guess what? IT'S ALL AUTOMATIC!

The ClickFree Automatic Backup Hard Drive is here!

NO software. NO set up. NO time consuming steps. All you have to do is PLUG IT IN and it AUTOMATICALLY finds, scans and saves ALL of your files.

It's a MASSIVE 16gb of AUTOMATIC back-up space!

Think about everything you keep on your computer: TONS of photos. Your ENTIRE music collection. Work documents, important files and sensitive information. And don't forget about those vacation and family gathering videos. You've gotta back that stuff up!

EXTREMELY user friendly: it'll even categorize your music, pictures, videos and documents into separate areas for maximum organization! Oh, and it works on multiple computers - you've gotta check this thing out!

Ultra Durable Aluminum Construction WITH a Wallet Sized Carry Case...

It's Just the Size of a Credit Card!

Have you noticed that all of the high end computer manufacturers are using aluminum these days? Take Apple, for example, with their MacBook series. That's because aluminum is durable and will protect the sensitive internal parts while keeping them cool.

This back-up drive is made from that same aluminum, and you'll notice the quality right away. It's as thin and small as a credit card, but UNBELIVEABLY strong and durable!

Take it everywhere without worry: it comes with a high quality wallet style carry case! Stick it in the case and you'll be carrying around your automatic back-up system in comfort, with full protection!

If You Think it's Hard or Time Consuming - YOU'RE WRONG!

Seriously, this thing couldn't be any easier to use: EVERYTHING IS AUTOMATIC!

All you have to do is pop it into your USB port and let it do it's thing. As soon as it's done, you'll be presented with ALL of your files, backed up and organized! And there's a TON of cool features on this thing, too. Check this out:

Easy Viewer: open this up, and you can view ALL of your saved files the same way they were saved. You'll know exactly what you're looking at and exactly where it is!

Easy Music: This is COMPLETELY iTunes compatible! Take your iPhone, iPod or iPad, and this copies ALL of your media, backs it up, and automatically places it in your iTunes library! It's always there, and it's always backed up!

Multiple Computer Backups: Go ahead and use it with any and all of your computers. From your work PC to your home computer - Windows OR Mac - doesn't matter, this can do it!

Observe the image below. This is what you're presented with after ClickFree automatically backs up all of your files. Remember, this starts as soon as you stick it into your computer. You don't have to do ANYTHING to get to this step:
