Quick Tip

Control Your iPad Notifications

My wife, bless her heart, is always downloading new apps for our iPad to try out. However, one app in particular likes to play a sound every time there a "reminder" for something – even when the tablet's just sitting on my desk.

It scares the pants off me, so here's how to put some control on the situation:

Tap Settings>Notifications. In the resulting screen you'll see which apps are currently in the Notification Center. These are apps that have permission to make beeps and the like, so tap on whichever one you'd like to silence.

Once in the app's notification settings, you can flip all kinds of switches. Everything from whether or not the app can show notifications to how the alerts are displayed are at your disposal.

Make your changes, and prepare to enjoy notifications as you like them!

Cool!

Bette from TX writes:

Just read your article on formatting your PC. What if you don't have a Windows disc?

There are a few options if you've misplaced or don't have a Windows installation DVD.

1.) Find someone with a Vista or 7 disc and make a copy of it. Microsoft licenses the installation, not the physical media, so the CD key sticker usually found on bottom or side of your computer gives you the right to install the operating system on the computer. A copy of the installation DVD will do just fine.

2.) Download an ISO file of the operating system. These can be tricky to find, as many contain illegal hacks or modifications, but if you're able to locate a downloadable ISO file you can use software such as CdBurnerXP or imgburn to burn it onto a blank DVD and create an installation disk.

3.) Download files & use instructions to create a new install disk from Dell. If you're a Dell owner, they provides a very helpful guide to downloading and creating Windows Vista installation disks. You can access this guide here.

Walter from VA writes:

In Windows 7 is there any way to set the time to 24 hour or Military time?

Hi, Walter. Thanks for the great question.

In previous versions of Windows, setting the clock to 24 hour or "Military" time was as simple a ticking a checkbox. Of course, like with any advance, they had to make it more complex as it got better. But the short answer is "Yes there is, and here's how:"

Click on the clock at the bottom right of your screen, and then click on "change date and time settings".

This will open up your clock options screen. Here, click on "change date and time". (Another neat feature on this screen is that you can put more than one clock on your desktop by selecting the "additional clocks" tab and setting up your new clock.)

When the change date and time screen opens, click on "change calendar settings". By the way, for those who don't know, the "change date and time" screen is also where you set your clock's time. You can either use the up and down arrows or simply highlight the number that you want to change and type in the new number.

Here you decide if you want "short" time (hours and minutes) or "long" time (hours, minutes and seconds) and click on the arrow to pull down your selection window. This will give you two options for military time. The small h indicates 12 hour clocks, the capital H indicating 24 hour clocks.

The first option, with the single H will give you a single digit (for instance, 8 AM will appear as 8:00) while the second option with the two HH's will give you true military time (08:00). Click okay and you're all done!

Hope that this helps.

Carl from OH writes:

I'm starting to have problems with CD-Rs. Especially near the end of the CD, the music gets scratchy and fluttery. They played Perfectly when I first burned them. They are stored in a jewel case. So, do CDs deteriorate or get cloudy with Age? Can they be polished up to get the music data off of them?

Great question, Carl. Many people rely on writeable CDs (CD-Rs) or rewriteable CDs (CD-RWs) to back up important information, send files to other individuals and to make music CDs to listen to in CD players. What many people do not realize is that optical media, which includes CD-Rs and CD-RWs, don't last forever. The lifespan of a CD depends on a variety of factors, including whether the CD is of the writeable/rewriteable variety or if the data or music was etched into the disc by the manufacturer as well as how the CD is cared for and stored.

Types of CDs

Factory manufactured CDs, sometimes referred to as pressed CDs, last much longer than CD-R and CD-RW discs because of the way the data is recorded. Data on pressed CDs is actually pressed into the disc, creating a series of pits and lands. Because the data is literally etched into the disc, these discs last quite a long time and are usually only affected by physical damage. Writeable CDs, on the other hand, are covered with a layer of dye. During the writing process, a laser burns the dye on the disc turning it black. Over time the dye breaks down rendering all or part of the disc unreadable. While it's more important to properly care for recordable CDs because of the dye, all CDs should be properly stored and cared for to extend their life.

The lifespan of recordable CDs depends on a variety of factors, such as which dye the manufacturer used and how the CD is cared for and stored. There are several dyes commonly used by CD manufacturers. Some of these dyes break down faster than others and some are more sensitive to light and temperature than others. Improperly storing a CD can also contribute to the degradation of the dye, which could render the disc useless.

Proper Storage

How you store your CDs can directly affect their lifespan and could lead to poor music quality or data that will not load. It's best to store CDs in protective cases, such as the plastic jewel cases that CDs are often packaged in. While thin plastic or paper sleeves will provide some protection for your CDs, heavy objects placed on top of the sleeves could still lead to damage. CD jewel cases stored vertically are less prone to damage than CD jewel cases that are stacked, so keep your CDs stored vertically in a cool, dry location.

Avoid stacking CDs on top of each other or setting an unprotected CD on any surface as dust or dirt particles on the surface could scratch the surface of the disc. If you must place a CD on a surface unprotected, set it down so that the side with the information is facing up. Return the CD to its storage case as soon as possible so that it is not damaged.

The dye coating recordable CDs can be degraded by a number of things, including the light emitted by the laser inside your CD player or computer and ambient light. Because of this, it's best to store CDs away from light sources, such as lamps or the sun. When storing music CDs in your car, use jewel cases or protective cases and store the cases in a glove box, under a seat or elsewhere in the car where they will not be exposed to direct sunlight. This will help prolong the life of your recordable CDs.

Hope that helps! Remember to keep your CDs clean and safe, but also remember to create a backup… because no matter how many precautions you take, they won't last forever!

Battery Options for Samsung Devices

You are an iPhone hater and love all things Android. The result: You opt for either the Galaxy Note or the sensational S3. However, the battery drains because of the 100-odd apps on your phone. Not Samsung's problem, though, because without the apps, the phone worked perfectly for two days before going down…

The super AMOLED screen isn't helping either. So what do you do?

How about opting for these nifty power options so your phone is never left high and dry? Your watering hole on the Internet for all these Samsung products is right here.

1. Extended Battery: It's best to keep another battery on hand – just in case you are out and about, but your phone is without juice. The u380 1500mAh lithium ion extended battery is engineered to offer additional battery life for your handset. Costs $49.99 here. And don't forget to buy the extended battery cover sold separately for $9.99 here. Since these batteries are on the heavier side, the traditional battery cover will not work.

WS App Review: Words with Friends

If you enjoy playing scrabble and want a way to play a similar game with friends, random new people (or just in person with a buddy), then this is the app for you. Words with Friends is a tile-based word game where players use tiles to build words on a board. The goal is simple: Get the highest score. The challenge comes in when the board starts filling up and you have to make a word with the letters AAAQZPF.

The game is as simple as dragging the tiles from your tile rack onto the board to play a word. The word must connect to an existing word on the game board, unless you're the first person to go. When you click "Play" the word you spelled is submitted and verified as a correctly spelled word and sent to your opponent. You can both see the board at the same time, but only the individual players can see the tiles in their rack.

Expedition: Endangered!

Beginning your journey at the American Museum of National History's expedition into the topic of endangered animals is easy – just select a link from the left menu and begin exploring!

You could start with the Introduction, which introduces the museum and the topic you're about to explore.

…or you could dive right in and decide to Tour the Exhibition. This will take you to an interactive map that you can click to move through the different sections of the exhibit (or you can use the side menu to select which species you want to visit specifically). You have the option to learn about Siberian Tigers, Radiated Tortoises, Flying Frogs, Cichlids, Nile Perch, Zebra Mussels, Alligators, Pandas, and Whales. Some of them are endangered species; some of them are the reason why another species is endangered (example: zebra mussels).

If you just want to learn about endangered animals, skip over the tour and head straight to the Endangered Animals section. There you can select species from the left side menu to learn more about. Also, if you just want to learn about the reason species become endangered, you can head right to Causes of Endangerment.

These are just a handful of the informative sections on the site. You can also check out the Glossary, What Can Be Done?, Human Population Size, Endangerment, and Terminology as well.

Overall, this is a great educational site to share with your kids and grandkids this summer! Check it out today!

GigaPan Time Machine

Time lapse photography has always caught my attention, so when I found this site that sort of works along the same premise as time lapse photography to create time machines (or as I like to think of them time capsules) I knew I had to share it with you.

I'd recommend that you start on About page and watch the Demonstration video. In seven minutes it fully explains how the time machines work, and what makes them different from regular time lapse technology. It explains it far better than I could.

As for navigation – on the main page, pick a video that sparks your interest (I started with Plant Growth and ended up watching all of them) and then either read the information on the right of the page about the project you've selected or dive right in and press play and watch the time machine video.

What is really neat about these videos is that because of the way they are filmed you can zoom in and out as watch by using the plus and minus sign on the video. You can also set what speed you watch the video in and whether it plays backward (from the finished product – so in the case of the plants, fully grown plants to seedlings) or forward from start to finish. The information on the right side of the video is amazingly in-depth in the topic and completely worth the read.

At the moment there are thirteen very neat videos to choose from so go check them all out!
