| Pause an iPad App Installation Here's a quick one for all you iPad users out there who like to go nuts in the Apple store or have multiple app updates going at once. Whatever the case, did you know that you can pause apps that are currently downloading just by tapping them? So next time you've got three or four big updates going you can tap to pause on some of the bigger downloads and let the little downloads ( or an app you want to get back to playing really bad ) finish up! Great! ~Andrew Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- Disable Automatic Driver Installation in Windows 7 and Vista Usually when I install new hardware I just let Windows do its little driver dance and do all the installation for me. Windows 7 is especially good at this -just pop in the peripheral in question and it does the rest! Sometimes, however, it is more preferable to use the manufacturer's drivers -say, for example, in the case of installing a new video card. The original manufacturer's drivers are always better than the generic Windows drivers in cases like this. So let's stop Windows 7 and Vista from automatically installing devices like these! Click the Start button, and in the Search Box type View advanced system settings. Now hit Enter. Under the Hardware tab click on Device Installation Settings. In this window you can choose how Windows reacts to new hardware. Most users will want to keep it on automatic, but if you ever need to install the original equipment manufacturer drivers this is the first step! ~Andrew Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Billy from Toronto asks: Do I capitalize the word "Internet" or not? What about "e-mail"? Do I use a hyphen or not? I just want some answers! Have you ever wondered about how you're supposed to spell Internet and e-mail? You know, is Internet supposed to be capitalized and is there a hyphen in e-mail or not? I have always been curious about those two things as well, so I was pretty excited to find the answer! Here's the scoop. The Internet is actually considered to be a proper noun and in the English language, most proper nouns are capitalized. So, in short, the word Internet should always begin with a capital letter. If you haven't been using a capital I, don't worry. You're not the only one! As far as the term e-mail goes, it is accepted with and without a hyphen. However, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the correct spelling is actually e-mail, with a hyphen. Why is that, you ask? Well, the word e-mail is composed of two different words (electronic and mail), so the hyphen helps separate them for a more technical spelling. Who knew? Now, go on and spread the word! ~ Erin Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- Mary from CA writes: My PC shows that my hard drive disk is almost full. I have not added any new programs. I have deleted and it does not change! I have run the disk cleanup, and it does not change. Help!!!? Hi, Mary. A full hard drive can cause all kinds of problems for your machine, including but not limited to a slow computer and, ultimately, hard drive failure. There are a number of possible reasons for this. 1) It's just FULL. You just have too much stuff on your drive. I had this problem several years ago, and found that the best solution for me was to move my personal files onto a removable hard drive. Clean up is a great program, but it only removes unnecessary programs and files, and most of these are pretty small. By removing your personal files to an external drive, you'd be clearing out a lot of hard drive space. 2) You've got a virus. Nasty bugs are everywhere these days, created by people with more computer knowledge than common sense. I have one on my phone right now that I'm struggling to get rid of. One variation of these things fills your hard drive with junk. Disk clean-up doesn't really help, because the thing can fill your hard drive as fast as you can empty it. Some of these files are also listed as essential files, and so wouldn't be deleted by clean-up. The best solution to this is to make sure that you have a good, reputable anti-virus program on your computer. Not something that you downloaded from a pop-up that says "YOUR COMPUTER HAS A VIRUS! CLICK HERE TO FIX IT!" 3) Your hard drive is failing It happens to the best of us. We get old, and things don't work like they're supposed to. Average life for a hard drive these days is seven or eight years, but if you take care of your computer like you're supposed to, it could last more than ten. When a hard drive starts failing, it can throw off all kinds of incorrect and erroneous messages, including telling you it's full when it's not. One clue to this is if your computer wants to do a disk check every time that you boot up. If that's the case, then you probably have multiple failed sectors on your disk and it's time to replace it. If it's more than five years old, and nothing above works for you, you may consider replacing it anyway. I hope that this helps. ~Randal Schaffer Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!
Android Back-up Tips If you want to update the firmware of your Android phone, it's important to back up your contacts and apps. Everything else is individual, like sms messages, calendar and notes. In fact, you have the option of syncing your contacts, calendar and notes to Google already, so you don't have to worry about that. Still, things can go wrong if you rely too much on Google for syncing everything and then again, what about backing up and restoring apps? The result is nothing but tons of unwanted SMS messages lying randomly in your inbox, cluttering up the whole UI, until you manually delete them. This is quite similar to email spam you can't stop incoming messages because anyone who has your phone number can surely send you a message and there is no other way to prevent this cycle. Deleting spam messages and cleaning up the inbox is not the ideal solution, as these spam messages will return periodically from different numbers. This behavior is really irritating and if you find yourself wasting a lot of time in deleting unwanted SMS messages on your phone, here is a useful Android app which gets the job done automatically. The human capacity for storytelling is a form of communication that has existed possibly as long as the human species. Before written history, humans remembered their history or taught their people through story telling, so it's no wonder to me that people would create a platform on the internet for story sharing that can evoke positive change. So, for Share a Story, I'm starting your visit on the About page because I believe they've written their mission statement far more eloquently than I could paraphrase it. Navigation is simple just use the tabs at the top of the page. They are Home, Stories, Contribute, and About. On the Home page you'll find the currently featured story. When I was there it was Flirting with the Devil (Part 2), with a handy link back to Part 1. To find other contributions you'll need to head over to the Stories tab where you will find several ways to navigate them. On the Stories page there are a selection of Top Stories being featured, as well as the ability to view stories by region and category. If you want to share your own story, you'll need to click the Submit a Story button and then read the requirements (1000 to 1400 words) before e-mailing the site your story. The Contribute section allows you to apply for positions that let you volunteer to help on the site either collecting stories or editing them. http://www.shareastory.org/about ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- This has been the summer of great Do It Yourself (DIY) sites! I can't believe I found another one. While this site is set up blog style, I much prefer to use the menu at the top of the page to narrow down the entries I'm looking at. The categories are: Crafts & Tutorials, Organizing & Cleaning, Recycling & Re-purposing, Kids, Food Fun, and Holidays. This lets me hone right in on the kind of information I'm looking for. I've spent most of my time in the Organizing & Cleaning, Recylcing & Re-purposing sections as I'm trying to organize, de-clutter, and get my living room ready for a paint job. But if you want to navigate through everything, just scroll down the page and use the Newer Posts and Older Posts links to navigate back and forth through the material. If you're going on any road trip with your kids this summer you have got to check out the 16+ Hour Road Trip with a Toddler and a Preschooler article. The author came up with so many innovative ways to keep her kids busy in the car that are easily adaptable for kids in a wider age range, and prevents you from having to say "Don't make me turn this car around!" because the kids will be entertained the whole time. This is an awesome DIY site that I hope you'll love exploring for great tips and tricks to make your life easier, more organized, and fun! ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com Your Music Collection Might Be HUGE...
