Quick Tip

Bud from Nicholasville KY writes:

If I backup only the Windows folder on my PC and then restore it, will I have a working PC?

Backing up your Windows folder, (usually in c:\windows) is not enough to restore your computer should the PC's hard drive have mechanical problems. The best way to restore a computer back to a previous state is to use backup software that supports disk imaging.

Disk Imaging software will make an exact duplicate of all of the information, files and settings needed to start and run your computer (along with all of your files), then package them into a single file to place on a backup drive. Windows 7 includes the ability to make image files natively, but I recommend Laplink Disk Image as it supports some advanced functions, like mounting images (so you can restore individual files), hardware independent restore, and comes with a bootable CD to let you restore the image file without having to reinstall windows first.

If you don't want to backup your PC using an imaging program, the best bet is to just backup your personal files – and should your PC crash, to reinstall all the applications from the CDs or redownload them. Your personal files are usually located in c:\users\yourname (in Windows Vista/7) and in c:\documents and settings\yourname, but there can be other personal files stored in program folders and inside of programs configuration files. This is why imaging programs are so good to use. I highly recommend purchasing one.

AJ from GA writes:

If your computer's USB ports are 2.0 and you have a multi-port external USB port that is 3.0 and you use the multi-port for transfers, will the speed be equivilent to the 3.0 ports? Thanks.

Unfortunately, AJ, there is no way to turn a USB 2.0 port into a USB 3.0 port. On the plus side, however, USB 3.0 ports are backwards compatible with USB 2.0. This means you can buy an add-in card for your desktop PC to upgrade to USB 3.0 and still plug in all of your USB 2.0 devices to those ports - including a hub. The USB 2.0 devices will still only work as fast as they would on a 2.0 port, but you won't need to worry about where to plug things or not having enough ports.

You can rest assured that for many devices USB 3.0 does not offer significant improvements. The devices that will see major improvements with USB 3.0 will involve transferring files. If you've got keyboards, mice and printers then chances are you don't need USB 3.0 yet.

Computers 101

Marilyn from Waukesha, Wisconsin writes:

I have inadvertently clicked on some unknown button that has enlarged everything that I open on my screen to a 22pt font. I have gone into "Control Panel" to "Magnifier" and I haven't been able to change any settings. I thought that maybe it was a mouse (I have ordered one of your fabulous mice) problem – as my mouse does have a setting that I could press on the right "extra" button and it would magnify temporarily – but now I can't even do that. Please Help.

The Windows operating system includes several options for changing the size of icons, images, and fonts on the screen. While this can be helpful, if you need text to appear larger, it may also cause problems if words and images become stuck in a setting that is too big or small. Getting the text on your screen back to the proper font size is handled in one of a few different ways, depending on how the size was originally changed.

The simplest method for decreasing font size is to use a keyboard shortcut for whatever program is currently open. For instance, in most web browsers tapping the "Ctrl" and "-" (minus) keys at the same time automatically reduces the font size, while tapping "Ctrl" and "+" together makes the font appear larger. If the keyboard shortcut doesn't change the size of your enlarged font, the problem is instead caused by a setting within Windows that needs to be manually changed.

To resolve the problem, open the "Start" menu and click the "Control Panel" button.

The Control Panel

Click the green "Appearance and Personalization" link on the right side of the window, which is located above the "Clock, Language, and Region" heading.

Appearance And Personalization

Open a new menu containing options for changing the size of objects by clicking the green "Display" link at the center of the window.

The Display Window

Locate the entry at the center of the window for the specific size you want to use, such as "100%" for normal size or "125%" for slightly larger images, and click the corresponding radio button.

Changing Image Size

Click the "Apply" button at the lower-right corner of the window to apply the change and set your screen back to its original size option.

Applying Changes

If your text is still too large, there is another setting in the same set of menus specifically for just adjusting font size. Return to the "Display" window containing the radio buttons and click the "Set Custom Text Size (DPI)" link at the left side of the screen.

Opening The Font Size Menu

Open the drop-down menu labeled "Scale to this percentage of normal size" and select the "100%" option. Click the "OK" button to automatically set the fonts on all programs back to their normal scale.

Reducing Font Size

In most cases, this should return all fonts and images to normal size, but you may still experience problems with the Windows "Magnifier" program enlarging images on your screen – even if you previously turned the program off. To ensure the Magnifier tool isn't running at all times, open the "Start" menu and type "Magnifier" in the search box. Click the entry for the Magnifier tool underneath the "Programs" heading.

Opening The Magnifier

Open the Magnifier tool's options menu by clicking the blue cog icon located to the right of the "View" button.

Magnifier Options

Click the blue link at the bottom-left corner of the window labeled "Control whether Magnifier starts when I log on."

Accessing Startup Options

Scroll down through the list of startup options to the heading named "Make things on the screen larger." Remove the check mark from the box labeled "Turn on Magnifier" to ensure the program isn't automatically turning on every time you start your computer.

Disabling Magnifier Auto-Startup

Click the "Apply" button to save your changes and then restart your computer.

A Quick Guide To Setting Up Time Machine Backup On Mac

Backing up a Mac – probably one of the most important things you should do as a Mac owner and one of the most neglected. Don't worry, I'm not here to lecture – instead I'm going to show you a quick guide to getting started with using the Time Machine Backup feature that comes built into all Macs.

Time Machine is the automatic back up program built in to the Mac operating system. Once switched on and linked to a hard drive, it will back up your Mac every couple of hours or so, as long as the hard drive is plugged in.

The program will back up any changes that you make to your mac, too (for example, an extra file saved or something deleted). It will note the changes and make a backup, which means if you saved a file today and it's not there next week, you can track back and find it.

…and although time machine would have backed up several hundred times by then, it will still have a back up of previous files right up until the day you started backing up.

Setting Up Time Machine

Before you get started you'll need a hard drive of some sort – ideally at least the same size as the hard drive already in your Mac. Portable or desktop doesn't make a difference, really – unless you spend a lot of time away from home and use a laptop, in which case I'd recommend a portable so that you can take it with you.

Once you have a hard drive, plug it in and allow it to load. You should be able to see it in two places, either on your desktop or in the finder – on the left hand side under the devices menu. (The finder is the smiley icon in the dock, far left).

Once you know it has loaded close the finder.

Next, you want to click on the apple in the top left hand corner and go to system preferences.

Time-Machine-setup

You will then see the Time Machine symbol in the preferences box. Click it and enter the options panel.

Setting up time machine backup 2

You'll then be taken to the Time Machine settings panel and will want to flick the switch and select on.

setting up time machine backup 3

You will then a get pop-up asking which drive you are selecting for your backup. Select the drive that you have just plugged in, and press OK.

Setting up time machine backup 4

Close the preferences and you are done!

Common Questions:

How do I know if the Time Machine has backed up?

You will often see this symbol spinning in the bar at top, this shows you that it is backing up. If it hasn't backed up, you will get an exclamation mark in the middle. This is not an issue – just make sure your drive is plugged in and ready to back up at the next opportunity you have.

Setting up time machine 5

What if my hard drive fills up with backed up stuff?

Time machine will automatically go to the oldest backup that it has and delete from there. The likelihood is that it will be several months old or longer, which means you have either forgotten about it or you don't need it! At this point, it will also prompt you and ask you if you want it to delete the oldest files on record to free up space.

What type of hard drive should I use for Time Machine?

This is down to user preference really; as long as it is a reliable brand, it won't make too much difference. USB or Firewire hard drives will both do the same job. The only thing you need to make sure is that your hard drive is at least a similar size to the hard drive on your mac. If it's not, and you have a lot of files, it will fill up very quickly and you wont have much of a backup history on the Time Machine hard drive.

OpenOffice.Org Writer: How Do You Measure?

Many people, myself included, tend to use the rulers while they edit. I personally like to see where I am on the page, whether it's for placing graphics within the margins or to quickly place a tab stop at a particular location – I just need to have the ruler visible.

We all know that there are different units to measure with – inches and centimeters come to mind first, but in computer programs there's also point (just like the font size measurement) and in OpenOffice.org probably a couple you haven't even considered.

3D Stereograms

As a kid, I had no idea what a stereogram was. I just knew I loved those "find the image in this swirl of color" Magic Eyepictures. It was annoying that my sister always saw the image before I did. These pictures are called autostereograms, and are a type of optical illusion where you trick your brain into seeing a 3D image.

When you arrive at the site, you'll find that you are greeted by a page full of stereograms, and if you want to see more just click Page 2, Page 3, or Page 4. There are a total of 33 stereograms that you can challenge yourself with, so don't be a afraid to dive right in! To get started, click on the stereogram you want to try out; this will take you to the larger version of the image. Focus your eyes softly in the center of the image and let the 3D image pop out at you!

Have difficulty seeing the images? I do too at first. Check out the Stereogram Viewing Tips section to find helpful hint about how to help trick your brain into seeing them. My best advice is to be patient and really give your eyes a chance to adjust to what you're trying to see – in other words, don't get frustrated and stop in thirty seconds. I may be guilty of that on occasion.

Are you ready to trick your brain? Then what are you waiting for? Head over to the site and check out those images!

Wilson Todd

Welcome to Wilson Todd: America's Premier Vaudeville Photographer, a site dedicated to the vaudeville photography of Wilson Todd. I grew up watching old movies and musicals from the dawn of film, and through them developed a fascination with vaudeville performers and their acts. As soon as I saw this site my curiosity was instantly piqued.

There are three sections you'll want to navigate to: Wilson Todd Bio, Vaudeville Circuit, and Photographs. For the first two you may want to enlarge your view size as the font is ridiculously tiny. (I went up to 150% so that I didn't strain my eyes reading the page. It is completely worth it).

Wilson Todd Bio – Here you'll learn all about the man behind the camera who took amazing photographs, how he got started as a photographer and what camera he used to take the photographs.

Vaudeville Circuit – Here you'll learn about the vaudeville circuit and what it offered in its hay-day; then in the post script you'll learn about its legacy when its popularity had faded.

Photographs – You can switch the size of your view back down to 100% for this section as it is all photographs. I clicked on the first image and then used the Next button at the top of the page to navigate through all the images. You could, however, click on just the images you want and use the back button on your browser or click Photographs to go back to the main listing to pick the next one you liked to view. The photos are amazing and capture the essence of not only Vaudeville but also of the roaring twenties!

Print Quality is another section you might want to visit. It discusses the quality of the images produced by Wilson Todd, what they were printed on, and where the collection has been showed.

Go check this amazing collection of images out today!
