| Having trouble viewing parts or all of the newsletter? View the entire newsletter here! In The News 07-06-2012 How Much Is Windows 8? Cheaper Than You Think Windows announced this past Monday that the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro will cost only $40. This applies to any Windows user running XP or newer. This is a significant announcement since past upgrades have cost much more than $40. Upgrading to Windows 7 from an older version cost $120, while upgrading from one version of 7 to the other cost $65. The $40 upgrade fee is a promotion and will only last until the end of January 2013 once Windows 8 is released, which will be this fall. The upgrade also requires that users download the Windows 8. Not wanting to wait around or have a slow connection? An upgrade version on DVD will be available for $70 during the promotion. Each option is making it more affordable than past upgrades. Windows made no mention about the general, non-promotional pricing for Windows 8. Small Enough For Ya? Rumors are flying around that Apple is about to do something big and by big I mean something small. New rumors and leaks suggest that Apple is looking to develop and create a smaller and less expensive iPad. The current model has a near 10-inch screen, while the smaller model is said to be 7 or 8 inches. This move will put it into even more direct competition with Amazon's Kindle Fire and the recently announced Google Nexus 7. Both existing 7-inch tablets sell for $199. Just like with all Apple rumors, it's hard to say if we will ever see a smaller iPad. In fact, the very idea goes against the vision laid out by co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, who died last October. According to Jobs, a smaller iPad would not be sufficient to deliver a full tablet experience. So now we sit and wait, ready to see if a smaller iPad does in fact become a reality. -Mike Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Adam, from FL asks: I have a question regarding Windows Media Player. My media player keeps updating my music files with files I don't need. And whenever they pop up, I delete them. For example, music files that have to do with system sounds and other ridiculous music files. How can I turn this off? Thanks for your help! I run Windows 7. To do this, start by typing Windows Media Player in the Start search and click on the Windows Media Player link. Changes need to be made in the Library view, so if your player is in the Now Playing mode, you can switch to the Library by clicking the Switch to Library button in the upper right corner of the player window. You can also access the Library by first hitting the Alt key. This will bring up a menu, from which you wll want to chooseView>Library. In the Library window, click the Organize button and select Manage libraries>Music. When you see the folder list, click on any folder you want to remove. Click the Remove button and then click OK. You can also create a folder, and have the media player update only from the folder you've created. Another way to prevent unwanted additions to your Player, is to choose which media files are automatically included in the Library. This is done by turning off features in the Options dialog box. Again, click on the Organize button. This time, select Options. This will bring up the Options dialog box. If you want to prevent media files from being automatically added when they're played, under the Player tab, uncheck the box beside Add local media files to library when played. If you want to prevent remote media files from being automatically added, uncheck the box beside Add remote media files to library when played. Thanks for the question, Adam. ~Kevin Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!

The human capacity for storytelling is a form of communication that has existed possibly as long as the human species. Before written history, humans remembered their history or taught their people through story telling, so it's no wonder to me that people would create a platform on the internet for story sharing that can evoke positive change. So, for Share a Story, I'm starting your visit on the About page because I believe they've written their mission statement far more eloquently than I could paraphrase it. Navigation is simple just use the tabs at the top of the page. They are Home, Stories, Contribute, and About. On the Home page you'll find the currently featured story. When I was there it was Flirting with the Devil (Part 2), with a handy link back to Part 1. To find other contributions you'll need to head over to the Stories tab where you will find several ways to navigate them. On the Stories page there are a selection of Top Stories being featured, as well as the ability to view stories by region and category. If you want to share your own story, you'll need to click the Submit a Story button and then read the requirements (1000 to 1400 words) before e-mailing the site your story. The Contribute section allows you to apply for positions that let you volunteer to help on the site either collecting stories or editing them. http://www.shareastory.org/about ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com
