LEGOs and Chemistry

The Mind and Hand Alliance

Educators and parents know that LEGO blocks are more than a creativity tool for kids and a torture device when stepped on. Did you know that they are a tool for teaching chemistry? The MIT Edgerton Center has the answer.

The MIT Edgerton Center was founded to provide hands-on educational experiences for MIT undergraduates. The Mind and Hand Alliance is a subset of the Edgerton Center's K-12 programs, specifically designed to:

  • Provide STEM curriculum packages with accompanying materials and support to K-12 teachers and other educators
  • Help K-12 educators and organizers find, support, and train dedicated, highly-qualified MIT alumni volunteers to inspire student interest in STEM
  • Form positive, productive partnerships with other K-12 educational organizations

Baking soda and vinegar isn't just for volcanoes anymore! From the website, click the 'For Educators' tab for instructions on using LEGOs to teach chemical reactions, like the reaction between vinegar and baking soda that results in sodium acetate.
