In The News 07-27-2012 Your Weekly Update In The World Of Technology Say Hello To Mountain Lion Apple released its latest version of OS X, named Mountain Lion, earlier this week. Mountain Lion boasts a lot of new features and is attempting to help bridge the gap between desktop Macs and Apple's mobile devices. Mountain Lion features include better iCloud integration. iCloud allows Apple device users to save and backup documents, images, and more in the "cloud" and helps to sync them up across multiple devices. Another big change is the addition of Messages. Messages essentially replaces iChat and again helps to keep your messages in order across devices using iOS's iMessage. Messages works with existing IM platforms such as AIM and Yahoo Messenger, but message syncing will only work with OS and iOS devices. Mountain Lion also boasts integration with social networking apps such as Twitter and Facebook. Posting tweets and status updates can be done with a single click, while the apps also notify you about comments, retweets, etc. Twitter is ready to go, while the Facebook integration won't be in full effect until the fall. I Like Want That Any Facebook user is familiar with the "Like" button. "Oh, that's a funny status!" Like. "I love that band, they're my favorite." Like. Now it looks as if the Like button is about to accept a friend request from something new: the "Want" button. Reports are currently being released that say Facebook is working on creating the new Want button. It will allow users to share with their friends various things they may "want", simply by clicking on a button. Now you can let your entire social world know that you want that 25lb bag of breakfast cereal (I want a 25lb bag of breakfast cereal). The Want button will go beyond just being a Like button for coveted items, however. In fact, it will be a genius marketing tool for Facebook. Facebook will collect the data of which items a user wants and will potentially use that information for more targeted marketing, such as the ads you currently see on the side. Susan from FL writes: I have taken some videos with my laptop's webcam and have wanted to send them to my family to see, however, when I try to attach them to the emails it tells me the file is too large to send, is there anything or anyway to get them attached to the emails? Thank you! Sending video as an e-mail attachment can be a problem, as most e-mail providers limit the size of attachments. Depending on your provider, the limit may be as small as 2 megabytes, so what do you do? The best solution I have found is to upload the video to YouTube and use a little known feature of YouTube known as "privacy settings". When you upload a video (you can even record directly from your webcam on YouTube) you will be presented with a screen to name your file and add a description and to the right is a drop down menu for privacy settings. Privacy settings allow you to select if the video is public, unlisted or private. Once you make a selection and click save YouTube will set the video to the setting you've selected. Public can be seen by anyone and is searchable/viewable on your profile. Unlisted can only be seen by people who have a direct link to the video and will not appear in searches. Private is only viewable by people with a specific e-mail address or YouTube ID. Once you upload, go to the video and you will see a web address next to Video URL. Type that address in to an e-mail and tell someone about what the video is, (along with your message) and click send. You won't need to worry about attachment size limits or long downloads for your friends, and they can view the video whenever they like by clicking on the link. Adjusting Android Stock Camera Photo Quality While it may not include all the bells and whistles available in some camera apps, the flexibility of the photo quality adjustments found in the stock Android camera should be enough to satisfy most casual photographers.
