| Jim from USA writes: Is their a difference between hibernation and sleep? Sleep and hibernation do a very similar thing, but in different ways. Both keep all of your applications and windows saved and allow you to resume back to the point you were at before hitting sleep/hibernate, but one is designed for short breaks and one for longer breaks. Sleep, (also called Suspend) saves the information into your computer's RAM and uses a small amount of power to keep the ramRAM and some system components active to allow you to quickly resume where you were. Hibernate, on the other hand, saves the information to your hard drive then shuts down your computer. This uses the least power, but takes longer to start back up. If you're going from the office to a meeting you may just want to close your laptop lid to suspend. It'll use more power than if you hibernate, but it'll come back quickly when you get to the meeting. That's a much harder question to answer then you might imagine, Norman. For this reply's sake, we'll focus on specifications to get in a desktop instead of manufacturers, as things like warranty, price, location and availability vary greatly among companies. For basic tasks like web browsing, e-mail and auction creation you don't need a lot, but there are certain components which will give you the biggest bang for your buck. Processor: Core i3-2100 (Or higher) or Core i5-2300 (or higher). The newest core i3 and i5 processors from Intel have very solid performance for the price and offer a very speedy processor compared to some cheaper AMD alternatives. While AMD processors compete well when running many applications at once, single applications will respond quicker on a core i3 or i5 chip. The one exception is AMD's A6 and A8 line of processors, which while being slower on single applications do have very impressive integrated graphics which can enable modest game playing. Memory: 4 GB or higher. More than 4 GB isn't necessary for a few applications used at once, but can't hurt. Don't spend extra money to upgrade unless you have a specific program which requires it like Photoshop. Hard Drive: Any are good, but look for one where the speed is rated at 7200 RPM. You'll really shock the PC sales guy by asking what the hard drive speed rating is, but 7200 RPM drives perform significantly faster then 5400 RPM drives typically found in cheaper PC's. If you can't get a 7200RPM drive it's not the end of the world, but it'll make programs open faster and browsing images/files quicker. Monitor: Buy the biggest you can afford. Having bought my father a 24″ LCD on sale at a wholesale club for $249 I knew even though he initially said he didn't need it and it was too big, he soon fell in love with the easily readable text and larger work area. And here is one last tip… Don't be afraid to find someone to build it for you! Susan from Wood River, IL USA writes: I have Windows 7 and am looking for a program that will removed duplicate files on my hard drive. Can you recommend a good one? Duplicate files can be a real nuisance to the organization of your PC. They take up unnecessary room, and can be a headache when trying to find the right version. This tip will take you through how to delete these files and take the power back from your clogged up hard drive. It's simpler than you might think to get rid of duplicate files, and doesn't even require you to download external software. To get started hold the windows button on the keyboard and hit "F" at the same time. This will open the search program. Type in the file that you suspect to be duplicated. On the toolbar, click "views" and then "details". Scroll down the list and look for files with the same name. If the date modified is the same in two that appear to be the same then the chances are that you can delete one of them. However, if you are aware of a large amount of duplicates on your hard drive, then you may want an external program to find them for you. Go here, download the program, and much like before, scroll down, find the duplicates and delete them. It's as simple as that! Just remember that if you make a mistake you can always go to your recycle bin and restore the file. I've been guilty in the past of having multiple copies of the same album. I have Vista for an OS on a HP laptop. I always leave my thumb drive plugged in. After shutting down and doing a restart I cannot get the OS to fire up. All I get in the top left corner is a flashing dash. When I use the flash drive in my daughter's laptop it works perfectly. Any ideas? The answer is deceptively simple. Your computer is setup to be able to boot off external devices such as USB devices, and this is causing your computer to try to load an operating system from the USB flash drive. The way to fix this is to go into your computers BIOS and change the boot options to either not include USB devices or place them after the hard drive in the boot order. How to access the bios will vary manufacturer to manufacturer, but usually when you first turn on the PC you will either hit F10, F2, Delete or F12 to access the BIOS configuration. Once in there, you want to change your boot order and make sure booting from USB devices is not selected or that it's lower on the list than your hard drive. Personalizing Siri Siri is the voice-recognizing personal assistant who comes equipped with the iPhone 4S. It listens and speaks like a normal human being, and like any relationship, the better you get to know each other, the more rewarding the connection will be. Today, we'll teach Siri a little bit more about yourself. To begin, open the Contacts app. We are going to create a contact for yourself that Siri can use. Well all you need to do is visit this site where you can set up a fan page for your favorite band, event, club, book, and more in minutes! All you need to do is create a Facebook fan page, and then head on over to Lujure to start customizing it today. I suggest that you start by viewing the video on the main page. It shows you how the site works and how you can use it to make your fan site awesome in no time at all. This is a great solution for building a fan site because it doesn't require you to learn code! All you have to do is drag and drop the items you want and then publish them to your fan page. After watching the video, you'll need to register an account so that you can save your changes. To do so, just fill out the form on the main page, click the green Create My Account button and you'll be whisked away to the fan site creation area. It will want to F-Connect to your Facebook account, so you should probably register with e-mail account that you made the fan page with. If you haven't made the fan page yet, it will f-connect you and then walk you through the page creation. After you have a fan page set up, you can then start creating your tab. (I had to log in and then back out for it find the page I created through it, though.) Once it finds the page, click continue, then name the tab, and click continue. If it times out while creating the tab (this happened to me), log in again and it will be there. Click edit tab, and you can now drag and drop any of the features you want to have on your tab, as shown in the video. When you're done click publish! What I really like, as you're adding widgets to your fan page, is that when you select each one it brings up the form you need to fill in to add the widget. I also like that hey also have a link to View the Tutorial, which will open a tutorial video that walks you through what you need to do for the current step. It's very helpful!
