Quick Tip

Organize Your Documents

Do you dump every file you create into your My Documents folder? Is it the digital equivalent to a messy 7-year-old's room? Well never fear, the computer cleaner is here! (I can't believe I just said that!)

Anyhow, the best way to keep things organized is not to create any documents in the first place, right? That's not how the world works, though, so try setting up sub-folders inside the My Documents folder, instead.

Make one for each "category" of document that you have.

For example, you could have a folder for letters, one for invoices and so on. It makes keeping track of stuff much easier. Here's how to set it up:

1. Click the Start>Documents. This will open your "My Documents" folder.

2. Now, create a new folder with an appropriate name (right-click any blank area and select New>Folder from the resulting menu).

image

3. Finally, drag any documents that belong in that folder to it, and that's it! You can create as many of these little sub-folders under the "My Documents" folder as you need.

Oh, one final suggestion – you may want to make yearly folders too. For example, at the end of this year, make a folder called "2012 Docs". Then move everything you've made (folders and all) into that folder. Gives you a fresh start for the new year. (OK, so it's the Windows equivalent of shoving toys under the bed, but who cares? It works!)

Now, if only I could apply this technique to my daughter's room…

It's A FACT - YOUR Hard Drive Will Eventually FAIL!

100% GUARANTEED, FOR SURE - IT'S GONNA CRASH!!!

It's NOT a Matter of IF - It's a Matter of WHEN...

If It's Not Backed Up - You Lose EVERYTHING Forever!

YOU NEED DISK IMAGE!

Amazing Program Makes an EXACT Copy of Your Hard Drive...

And Will FULLY 100% Restore Your Computer After a Crash! FAST!

Software, Files, Programs, Windows, and Everything Else Will Be Saved!

Laplink DiskImage

Ever Wish You Could Travel Back in Time?

We've all had instances in our lives where we'd give anything to be able to go back and do something from the past differently. Maybe you missed the lotto jackpot by one number. Maybe you turned down what would have been a life-changing opportunity...

Or maybe your computer crashed and you lost everything - WHEN ALL YOU NEEDED WAS A SIMPLE BACK-UP PROGRAM AND EVERYTHING COULD HAVE BEEN RECOVERED - Files, software, programs, everything on your hard drive!

Well LapLink Disk Image is kinda like a time machine - it allows you to capture your entire hard drive on a disk as an image, and should you ever experience a crash, you just install the disk and EVERYTHING goes back to normal - your software, files, music, pictures: you name it, it'll all be there!

You just can't understand how awesome this is until a system crash inevitably happens to you - you won't believe how easy it can be to restore everything on your hard drive with this one amazing program!

Guess What? It Happened To Me - Windows Died.

Yep, me - the one whose ALWAYS telling people how important it is to back everything up no matter what. So, did I end up eating my words? Do I have egg on my face? NOPE. I used LapLink Disk Image, baby! That system crash picked the WRONG computer to mess with!

See, my Windows 7 did the old crash & burn - it happens to everyone sooner or later. It was completely crippled. My data was gone. My programs disappeared. My system needed to be COMPLETELY restored. Now, there's a few ways you can go about doing this, and they all go badly. Very, very badly.

It's Not a Matter of IF - It's a Matter of WHEN!

Hard drives are mechanical. They spin. It's 100% GURANATEED that eventually, your computer is going to crash. Just like it's inevitable that your car will need repairs eventually. And when it does crash...You lose EVERYTHING!

A Computer Crash Can Be DEVASTATING...

And what's worse? It's nearly impossible to restore it back to where it was before the crash. Your data is completely gone - photos, documents, music, financial records, e-mails - everything in your digital life is just plain gone!

Oh, and what about your software? You can spend DAYS trying to locate and reinstall your old software! Months, even! But after all that hard work, you're almost guaranteed not to have everything you did before the crash.

And good luck trying to recover those old serial numbers to prove that you indeed bought that software at some point. Who just keeps that stuff lying around? Nope - if your computer crashes, you're gonna burn...

Let's face it: a system crash is inevitable at some point. Be it in the form of a crash, malware or a virus. What's going to happen to all of your files, software and programs? How long will it take you to recover and reinstall everything? How much money would it end up costing you? It's going to be a miserable experience...

Unless you have LapLink Disk Image, of course. Then everything is fine!

Computer Crashes No Longer Mean a Thing!

Before we get to any of the specifics with this program, there's a couple of things you should know: this program is very easy to use (anyone can do it) and the bottom line is this:

LapLink Disk Image makes an EXACT copy (image) of your hard drive. If your PC crashes and you've used this program first, you can restore EVERYTHING back to the way it was when you did the backup by sticking the disc in and letting it do it's thing!

This image can be created on another hard drive, an external drive, a zip drive, a set of CD's or DVD's - whatever works for you. It's fast and couldn't be easier to use - IT RUNS DIRECTLY THROUGH WINDOWS!

That's right: software, files, programs, pictures, music...EVERYTHING!

Whether you accidentally downloaded a terrible virus, are experiencing a massive PC crash, got a ton of malware, have a PC that won't start - whatever - if you've used Disk Image, you'll have access to everything you backed up before your PC kicked that digital bucket.

Restore Individual Files!

This is TOO cool! Disk Image allows you to restore individual files as needed!

Let's just say you accidentally deleted an important file. Or somehow, you managed to corrupt a bunch of pictures you had saved on your computer. Disk Image allows you to restore ANY file you want - YOU get to pick and choose!

Simply pop your disk in and choose which file to reinstall. It's laid out right in front of you, and it's a quick and easy process. No matter what happens to your files, hardware, pictures - whatever - you can rest assured that it's safely backed-up and ready to be reinstalled whenever you need to!

Creating Back-Ups has NEVER Been Easier!

Maybe you just got a new computer and want to bring certain things over from your old one - no problem! Disk Image lets you pick and choose! And let's say you just bought yourself some EXPENSIVE new hardware. Install it and copy it with ease! Now it's backed up in case anything at all should happen to it!

And speaking of getting a new computer...maybe you're not aware, but most newer computer's don't come with a Windows restore disk anymore! Nope, the almighty dollar must be more important to them than customer loyalty...so get ready to shell out an extra 40 bucks on top of that new computer cost. OR use Disk Image - and restore windows on all your programs on your computer!

Look at that - this program has already paid for itself!

DON'T BE FOOLISH: MAKE A COPY OF YOUR SOFTWARE WITH EASE!

Added Bonus: Makes Adding A Larger Hard Drive Super-EASY!

Eventually you're going to run out of hard drive space. This happens to pretty much everybody, that's why external HD's are sold everywhere. Now, maybe a better idea would be to actually just put in a new, larger hard drive - but that's normally the kind of thing that would even give Stephen King nightmares!

Ahh, but if you have Disk Image, it's a snap! Just create an image of your current system onto the new drive and BINGO - Install the new drive and everything is just like it was before the upgrade - except now you have all the extra space! Sweet!

I'd say this alone is more than worth the cost of the program!

Talk About a BRILLIANT Program - Just Look at these Features!

Let's just sum this up, shall we? This might seem like a big bad program, but trust me - it's simple to use, powerful, and it WILL save you time, money and sanity! Check it out:

Makes an EXACT replica of the data on your PC!
Allows you to restore ANY AND ALL of your programs and data!
Optional Boot CD - repair & restore everything even if Windows won't start!
More Options: create FULL or PARTIAL disk images - it's entirely up to you!
This program allows you to burn the saved image to any disc: CD's OR DVD's!

THE BEST PART: It's EXTREMELY user friendly with a simple-to-follow wizard! Anyone can use this amazing program with ease!

Megan from USA writes:

Can you tell me how to capture pictures of places I find in Google Earth? I was able to do it a couple of times earlier last year, but now I cannot. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Google Earth is great tool if you wish to take a photo-walk around the globe, and it can also be used for research or academic purposes! However, for the sake of presentation (or documentation), we might need to save images captured Google Earth. Here's some insight on how to do so.

There are actually many ways you can take a picture of a place you find on Google Earth. To start with, locate the place you wish to take a picture of on Google Earth (I have used Eden Gardens, Kolkata for this article). Now you can try any trick below to save the screenshot as an image.

google-earth-eden

TRICK 1:

1. Go to File > Save > Save Image or use the key combination Ctrl + Alt + S.

google-earth-save-image

2. In the next dialog, name the image, choose the location and save it.

google-earth-save-image-dialog

TRICK 2:

1. Click the Share button to the top right corner (located beside the account button).

google-earth-share-email

2. Choose to share screenshot on Google Plus (after which you can download later) – or you can also email the image to any email address.

TRICK 3:

1. Hit F11 to go fullscreen. Now hit the printscreen button (PrntScr). Close the fullscreen mode by hitting F11 again. Launch MS Paint.

2. Hit Ctrl + V and you will have an image of the Google Earth screen on Paint. Use the crop tool and trim out the unnecessary part, leaving only the Google Earth view of the location you wish to have as an image.

So now that you know how to save pictures (print and share them as well) from Google Earth, what places are you going to share?

On The Move

Ben from MO asks:

I just got an iPad! Can you please posts some tips about iOS stuff?

So you've just recently unpacked your shiny new iPad, fiddled with the touch screen a bit, and tossed a few Angry Birds. In fact, you've downloaded a few different apps, even loaded up some of the pre-installed ones too, and in doing so have come up with a few nagging questions about iOS which Apple does not seem to readily answer via an instruction manual or even a simple cheat sheet. Luckily, you need not worry any longer as here you will find a variety of tips, tricks, and handy how to's to reduce your iOS frustrations.

Note: While the following tips primarily reference iOS 4.x running on the iPad 2, most are performed in a similar manner in Apple's iPhone/iPod touch range of products.

Securing your iPad with Passcode Lock

Before you even consider downloading Angry Birds to your iPad, make sure you properly protect your devices' data by turning on the Passcode Lock feature. Passcode Lock forces your iPad to request a numerical passcode when the device is powered on or woken from sleep mode. To set and enable Passcode Lock, follow these Steps:

From The Archives

Patrick from Olean, New York asks:

The USB MEMORY STICK is an amazing little thing, and so handy! My question? I have copied and pasted documents from My Documents without any problems. But from everything I read, you should download software in order to move this information from the computer to the USB Drive. So how am I doing it without software?

You may have been reading about Memory Sticks put out by Sony. These devices aren't the same as a USB flash drive, which are also sometimes referred to as a memory stick. The Sony Memory Sticks are commonly used in digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones for adding more storage. Many computers do require software to be downloaded for reading a specific type of Memory Stick. There are multiple kinds that Sony manufactures for different digital storage needs.

Once the proper software has been obtained and downloaded onto your personal computer, any images or audio files contained on the Memory Stick can be transferred to your computer and saved for later use. However, if you have a VAIO laptop computer, this software is already included. Since VAIO is manufactured by Sony, they decided to make it easily compatible with their Memory Stick products.

Today's Feature

Image File Guide

I get questions about image formats all the time, so if you don't know your JPEG's from your GIF's, this is for you. First, a little background on file compression.

There are basically two ways of saving images, lossy or lossless (no, I didn't make those up). If an image is saved in a lossy image format, it means the format being used discards some of the "unimportant" image information. However, the resulting image file is smaller. Lossless retains ALL the image information.

OK, now that you know that, here's a overview of the most common image formats.

JPEG – By far one of the most common image formats. It's primarily used for photographs. It is a lossy type of format, but most people can't really see the difference. You can adjust the amount of compression when saving a JPEG image, so you do have some control over the final output quality. JPEG's are extremely popular since they compress into a small file size and retain excellent image quality.

Keep in mind that the more you compress a JPEG, the more "pixely" it will tend to look. For the best results, save your JPEG's at the "medium" or "high" setting (your imaging software should bring up this option when you go to save as a JPEG). I really can't see any image degradation in most pictures saved at the medium setting.

You don't have to be fan of Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series, or even have played their latest entry into the game market, Skyrim, to be able to appreciate the time, effort, and skill that went into making this cake.

The cake creation is "Alduin the World Eater", the antagonist from Skyrim. If you haven't played the series, what I'm bringing you today is the most awesome dragon cake ever created! The amount of detail on it is incredible!

I'm linking you to the write up on the cake from Geekologie, because I like the fact that their site has a black background which is easier on my eyes – but you can learn even more from the cake artist's blog Baking Obessession.

The dragon sits perched above a mountain and was created for the cakemaker's son. Best birthday cake ever! I love all of the close up shots of the different parts of the dragon, because you can see how detailed the work is. Just looking at the wing's bone structure will wow you!

If you do pop over to Baking Obssession, you can get more of the information about how Vera made the cake, and catch a link to see the one made by Charm City Cakes (Ace of Cakes for any Food Network viewers) created for Bethesda.
