MIT+K12

MIT believes "American school children need better educational opportunities and more compelling forms of exposure to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-and to the people who work in these fields."

To address the problem they asked themselves these questions: How can we change the perception of the role of engineers and scientists in the world? What can MIT do, right now, to improve STEM education at the K12 level? What if MIT became a publicly accessible "experiential partner" to the country's K12 educators? What if MIT students generated short-form videos to complement the work those educators are already doing in their classrooms and homes?

In answer to these questions, The School has developed MIT+K12

The site is built around a simple idea: K12 educators and MIT should be working together to make STEM-based movies.

  • Educators submit ideas for experiments or demonstrations.
  • An MIT student(s) "checks out" (in the library sense of the word) the assignment and does a 5-10 mnute video demo/explanation in response.
  • or MIT students can come up with their own ideas and create a demo video
  • The videos are then posted to the website
