The interface is familiar, but it's functional and does most of what I need it to do. However, Microsoft has decided to change a lot of how Windows works by removing the start button and switching to the Windows 8 style program list. So what do you do in a few months if you want to buy a new computer and it comes with Windows 8? Microsoft has an answer for you. Get the Pro version of Windows 8 and you'll be allowed to use your license key to downgrade to Windows 7 or Windows Vista. Now this process won't be as easy as just clicking a downgrade button, as you will need to fully install Windows 7 (along with finding drivers and software for your computer), but it does provide an option for those of us unwilling to make the switch to Windows 8. ~Tim Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

If I tried to talk about EVERY feature of System Mechanic, we'd be here until the Sun burnt out. Get ready for some major highlights that'll have your jaw dropping. Booting up your PC is always a pain. No matter what you do, you could cook a Thanksgiving dinner before your computer is done starting. It doesn't have to be like that. By eliminating unnecessary or even HAZARDOUS programs from your startup, there'll be no more watching the clock, wondering when you can actually begin to use your computer. And without all these wasted resources going to unneeded programs, your computer will stay fast after booting. Do you LIKE some of your startup programs? No worries. If you don't want System Mechanic to take control, you can go in and see each and every program it wants to disable. Regardless of which path you take, it's easy and fast to get your PC booting properly. Oh, and do you ever get those annoying error messages when you boot up? Chances are after this, you'll never see them again! YES! In addition to startup programs, there's ALWAYS just TONS of files and applications that end up on your PC. Sometimes they came installed with the computer, other times they sneak in through vulnerabilities or hidden in other software. No matter how they go there, they are taking up GIGs of space!! Don't worry, CRUDD Remover is on the job. All this CRUDD (Commonly Redundant or Unnecessary Decelerators and Destabilizers) adds up into one giant, super slow, gunk of a mess. Even if you knew what programs were the trouble makers, it would take AGES to manually hunt through and clean up all those files. System Mechanic removes the work and eliminates all that unwanted mess - in minutes! Fully Controllable - You can make sure that System Mechanic doesn't remove anything you need to keep. This thing is crazy. Not only are you going to get even MORE speed by removing all that useless junk from your PC, but talk about clearing space! Your hard drive has its limits, so taking this giant burden off its back is going to give you a lot more wiggle room for stuff you DO want. Ever browse the net? Sure you do. Your computer has an "amazing" ability to hold onto a lot of useless stuff that you never even knew it saved. PC Cleanup has your back. With the push of a button you can clean out tons of wasted space and temporary files that you didn't even know were there to begin with! WOW! This is the ultimate solution to loaded hard drives. You can get back hundreds of megabytes in storage space... heck, you might even get a couple GIGABYTES of space back. Maybe you won't need that $200 external hard drive you were thinking about. Now you're saving space AND money. Computers always manage to have a ton of errors without any indication of how to solve them. How can anyone expect you to fix a problem when all you get is a string of numbers and a giant OK button. Let System Mechanic take care of it for you! From unintelligible error messages to mysterious lockups and even full-on system crashes, System Mechanic will find the solution. The All-In-One Repair Tool came straight out of your dreams and now it's a reality. This program will AUTOMATICALLY fix pretty much any problem your computer throws at it. It's got a toolbox FULL of utilities to make your computer so fast it won't be street legal. Just running ONE of these things is going to give you astonishing speed. But when you get them all going? Oh man, you're going to think someone slipped a supercomputer under your desk. But that's not all, honestly it's barely even HALF of the performance tools alone. Speed is great, but how about some raw, mind-blowing power? If you use some serious software, or even just want to get the most out of your PC as possible, System Mechanic has the adrenaline shot your computer needs! EnergyBooster! Take your PC to the next level with this incredible tool. By automatically turning off unnecessary background programs, your computer's limited resources are going to be free to turn their attention to the tasks YOU need them on! Don't let worthless background processes hog your memory or processor, use them how you want them. If you do high-quality video, audio, web design, ANYTHING, you'll immediately notice how ridiculously fast EnergyBooster makes your PC. Interested in something BRAND NEW? System Mechanic is always expanding its armory of tools and this version is no different. With new AcceleWrite, you'll almost never have to worry about disk fragmentation again. By automatically ensuring optimal storage of files, the creeping slowdown that your computer experiences over time from disk defragmentation is a thing of the past! It does the work for you, which means more time for yourself and a healthier life for your PC. Slow Internet? That's when NetBooster takes the stage. Each Internet connection is unique and your computer can't be pre-configured from the factory for an optimal setup for YOUR system. NetBooster examines your current connection and makes those specific changes so you get MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE. You'll see double, even TRIPLE speeds. And remember, if you don't want to go through these individually, System Mechanic can do pretty much everything on its own. It's impossible NOT to get huge gains from running this software, and it's as simple as a few mouse clicks. What more could you ask for? Especially nowadays, computer security has become a really big issue. You may think you're secure, but new vulnerabilities pop up ALL THE TIME! Even the tiniest of security holes can spell disaster for your privacy or your computer's ability to function. With so much on your computer, there's no excuse for taking risks. With just one button, System Mechanic will comb your computer for security flaws and fix every single one it finds. Blocking off hackers from entry, you get peace of mind that your files and confidential information are safely protected. You can NEVER be too secure. After your vulnerabilities are patched up, what about other kinds of intrusions? Unwanted programs, viruses, or malware trying to hijack your system. System Guard will be the shield that keeps your PC defended and in tip-top shape. System Guard does SO MUCH at once. If new programs try to add themselves to your startup, it will let you know. Dangerous programs trying to run? System Guard stops them IMMEDIATELY. Browsing can be hazardous, but with System Guard, your computer and browser are protected from even the wiliest of hacking attempts. If you've ever had your homepage suspiciously changed or a new toolbar appear out of nowhere, you'll know how important System Guard is! Privacy is just as important as vulnerabilities when it comes to security. With System Mechanic, you can make sure nothing you do gets to the wrong hands. With the Privacy Cleaner, anything you do can be erased, from browsing or search history to cookies and chat transcripts that websites or programs often automatically save. Or maybe you need something deleted? I mean... REALLY deleted. The Incinerator will make sure any of your private files, from old taxes to company memos can't be easily recovered by ANYONE. System Mechanic takes security seriously, and you can rest easy knowing you have the best programs protecting your PC and files. System Mechanic is loaded with SO MUCH and if you want to, it can be COMPLETELY AUTOMATIC. But if you want to know exactly what it's doing, you can examine every tool to see what it intends to fix or change. You'd be INSANE not to take advantage of all these amazing tools, but if you want to, you can pick and choose what you use and how you use it. But that's not all. It comes with a tool to completely customize your PC's operations. From hiding unwanted icons to making your start menu react faster, there's almost nothing out of your control - AMAZING! Lynda from AZ writes: Is there a way to customize the text size on your computer? I have Windows 7 Ultimate, and it only gives me 3 text sizes to choose from: 100%, 125% or 150%. I would like it to be less than 150%, but more than 125%. While some programs, such as your web browser, have options for changing text sizes, these solutions aren't optimal if you need larger text everywhere -such as on your Start menu or in the various Windows folders. To accommodate users who don't want small text on the screen, Windows 7 features the ability to manually choose several preset text sizes larger than the standard "100%" setting. But what the operating system doesn't plainly explain is that you aren't limited to just those preset options. If one preset size is too big and the next one down is too small, you can manually create your own perfect size. The option to change your text size is located inside your computer's "Control Panel," which is accessed inside the "Start" menu. Inside the Control Panel window, locate the icon positioned on the right side of the screen of a blue monitor. Click the heading next to the icon labeled "Appearance and Personalization." This new window provides a series of links to access features for changing how your operating system displays images on your screen. To reach the options for changing text sizes, click the "Display" link, which is located near the top of the window above the "Desktop Gadgets" heading. The right side of the "Display" window contains two of the preset text size options, but ignore these radio buttons as they won't help you set a custom size. Instead, click the "Set Custom Text Size" link at the far left side of the window. At the top of the new window you will find a box labeled "Scale to This Percentage of Normal Size." Although it seems like this option should let you choose a custom size, it only gives you the ability to choose between "100%," "125%," and "150%." Even typing a custom size in the box won't change the text size, as it will automatically revert to the nearest preset option. For instance, if you type "140%" it will automatically switch back to "150%." Instead of trying to change the box, you need to click anywhere on the ruler icon located directly underneath the box and drag your cursor toward the right to increase the size, or toward the left to decrease the size. Drag your cursor slowly until you reach the desired custom size, such as "122%" or "135%." Click the "OK" button to save your change. Depending on your Windows profile settings, your change may not immediately take effect. If the text size on your screen hasn't changed, restart the operating system to apply the new custom text size. ~ Ty Arthur Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? WS App Review: MyFitnessPal Whether you're trying to lose weight or someone just trying to keep up a healthy diet, MyFitnessPal is an app that you may consider trying out. The app, available for Android, iOS devices, and Blackberry, is a calorie counting program at its very core. You start out by setting up a profile, which includes entering current weight, goal weight, and other bits of vital stats that'll help in determining accurate results. It will let you choose how many pounds you want to lose or gain per week, then calculate a daily calorie total based on the information you give the app. There are also tutorial videos and an FAQ included to help you get started. Lists, Boxes, and Other Windows Elements Defined In some of my previous articles I have somewhat um whined about the differences between menus and lists and text boxes, not knowing for sure what each one was called. I call it like I see it; if it looks like a list, then that's what I call it. If a menu drops down, then I call it a drop-down menu. Thus, many terms get kind of incorrectly used and then when the real definition comes up, confusion is probably imminent. I decided the other day that I was fed up with not knowing what to call which box, list or menu ( mean, how can I tell you what something is if I don't know what it is myself?), so I looked it them up. So if you're confused as to what term means what, maybe this article will help. Super helpful - check it out here! (Want these tips in their entirety? Sign up for Premium!) Camera Sensor Size - Why It Matters Are you in the market for a new camera and totally confused by the industry lingo regarding sensor size? You may hear things like full frame, aps-c, crop sensor, 4/3, micro 4/3, nikon 1, 1/1.7, 1/2.5, 1″ and many more! So what's this all about? Let's start by going over what these measurements and phrases are about: the size of your camera's sensor. Size (in digital imaging) matters because the larger the size the more light can be collected by each pixel (if each sensor has the same number of pixels). Back in the days of film the size was a 35mm negative, which measured 36mm wide by 24mm tall. This sensor size is refereed to as full frame as it covers the same physical size as an old 35mm film negative. Get the whole scoop at Worldstart! (Want these tips in their entirety? I'm addicted to Pinterest because there are so many useful tips, tricks, DIY, and inspirational posts on there. So when I saw these "that one rule" posts come up, I broke out my cyber-sleuthing skills to track down where they were coming from. ThatOneRule provides post-it note styled messages submitted by internet users describing their one rule most of which are inspirational! Navigation on this site is anything but bland. You can use your mouse wheel to scroll through the pages, or you can use standard page number beneath the most recently featured posts. You can also browse by category, or by what's most popular. Want to share one? Well it's really easy to do just mouse over the post you want to share and then select how you want to share it (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Stumble Upon, Digg It, Pinterest, reddit, or save it to your computer). After you've browsed the selection, all 312 pages (and counting), you might want to contribute your own rule. What would your one rule be? Once you have the answer to that question, click Submit at the top of the page. If you don't like the background color you received by default, click Submit again or refresh the page until you have one you like. Eh, I'm picky about those sorts of things. Then once you have the background you want, choose the category your rule would fall into from the drop down box next to choose a category. Then you'll want to click where it says Type Rules Here and start typing your rule. You only have 140 characters so be precise with what you want to say. Once you've got your rule the way you like it, check the box that you agree to the terms and conditions (read them in the text box next to the check box) and then press Submit. Now you can download your rule to upload it Facebook, add it to Pinterest, or even e-mail it to your friends! I like to share inspiration with my sister when she needs her spirits uplifted. I think for me the best part is sharing them.
