I want to keep AOL as a program, but not as the home page that opens automatically in Explorer 8. What can I do? Hey, George - to change your home page in Internet Explorer 8 all you need to do is to go to a webpage you would like to be your new home page (for example http://www.google.com) then click on Tools > Internet Options > General and click Use Current. You should now see http://www.google.com as your home page. Click OK, then close Internet Explorer. When you reopen it your home page should go to http://www.google.com (or whatever page you set it to.) P.S. For an updated web browser (one which may run better than Internet Explorer 8), I would recommend downloading Mozilla Firefox by clicking here. Remember, you can have both Firefox and Internet Explorer installed at the same time, so you can always switch back to using Internet Explorer if you don't like how Firefox handles. ~Tim Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Harry from Minnesota writes: What the heck is a toggle key? Harry, I'm really glad you asked this one! I ignored the word toggle during the first 5 years of using my computer because I had no idea what it was and was too embarrassed to admit it. In the computer world, the word 'toggle' comes up a lot. Basically to toggle means to switch from one setting to another. You can toggle between screens on your computer. There are toggle tools that let you enable and disable Adobe Flash while you are browsing the internet. A toggle key allows you to toggle (ya think?) or switch between key functions. In Windows, there are three toggle keys. Caps Lock: You can toggle between capitals and lower-case letters. Num Lock: You can toggle between numbers and no numbers. When the Num Lock is off, then you can use the other functions on the keys instead, i.e. the arrows, Home, End, etc (see chart below). Scroll Lock: This key isn't used for much toggling of anything anymore (I personally have never used it). Modern software doesn't usually support Scroll Lock, but there are exceptions, such as Microsoft Excel. In Excel when the Scroll Lock is off, you go from cell to cell with your arrow keys. With Scroll Lock on, you can scroll the whole page with the arrow keys on the number pad; the cells stay in the same place and don't scroll with you. You can even turn Scroll Lock on and off from within Excel. Thus, if you happen to find software that works with Scroll lock, you can turn it on and pause what's on the screen while you scroll, or when it's off, just scroll normally. Standard Keyboard: There you go; toggle keys in a nut shell. One added note: Sometimes toggle keys can accidentally get turned on (especially the Caps Lock key). If you would like a handy tip on how to be notified as soon as these keys are hit by accident, then click here. iPad Show Me the Link! One thing I've noticed about web browsing on a tablet is the lack of information I'm given like when there's a word that links somewhere instead of a full address. In a regular web browser I can look in the info bar at the bottom and see where something goes no problem. Get the rest here! (Want these tips in their entirety? Sign up for Premium!) Opening a Folder in a New Process Microsoft has done a great job with Windows 7 and it is by far the most polished operating system I have ever seen. There are no broken graphics, no glitches and no failures hiding to annoy you during your work. The best thing about Windows 7 is that it is an operating system for everyone. If you are a tech-savvy user, you can have as much fun with Windows 7 as any basic home user would have. Today, I will tell you about a feature in Windows 7 that can be very helpful. This feature is available for both power-users and normal users. It allows us to create a new process for any folder or disk drive we want to open in Windows, that will considerably improve performance. A process is a single program that can manage a specific amount of work or a particular job. For example, when we open Microsoft Word, we are actually creating a process that runs in the memory. Our operating system, Windows, also runs with the help of processes. Many of them are system processes started by Windows. We users can also create new processes known as user processes. Now that you have an idea of what a process is, we will see how to open a folder in a new process. Whenever we open a folder or a disk drive in Windows, it opens within the same process of explorer. However, we often see that folders with a huge number of images or videos lag at times and even become non-responding. This causes the explorer process to crash and we lose any other work we were doing, like a copy-paste job or a file being saved to disk. This can be a serious problem, but it can be avoided by opening a folder in a new explorer process in Windows 7. Here is how. (Want these tips in their entirety? Sign up for Premium!) Critical Java Security Update Have you heard about the new zero-day security exploit in the popular Java software? Chances are if you have a desktop or laptop computer you have Java installed either by default or the first time you tried to access a site that required it. Hackers finding exploits in software is nothing new, but what makes this exploit so dangerous is that it's almost impossible to detect and there has been wide spread publication of how to use the exploit, resulting in many examples of hackers using it on the Internet. So what do you do to protect yourself? (Want these tips in their entirety? Sign up for Premium!) For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter.
