Quick Tip

Save a Search in Windows 7

Did you know that you can save a search string in Windows 7? It's really helpful if you commonly search for one kind of item on your hard drive, so you don't have to go typing it in every time.

Here's how you do it.

First, open up Windows Explorer. You can either click Start>Computer, or type in Windows Explorer in your SearchBox located above the Start button.

In the upper-right had portion of the Windows Explorer window, you'll see a box where you can type your search in. I typed in jpeg, to search for all the jpeg files on my computer. (obviously you can use your own search term).

image

Once your results pop up, click the Save search button, which is located on the left side of the Windows Explorer window.

image

Another windows will pop up and ask you to name your saved search. I just click Save.

Now you'll see your saved search under the Favorites section in the left column of Windows Explorer. You can click on it at anytime to automatically start your custom search!

THAT MEANS YOU CAN ADD LIGHT HERE, THERE... ANYWHERE!

Just try to tell me you don't need this SOMEWHERE in your house!

A dark hallway?

A dark kitchen counter?

A dark patio?

A dark entryway?

A dark garage?

WHAT?! ARE YOU LITERALLY LIVING IN THE DARK?

Well, Lighten up! You have no more excuses!

And hey, why are you keeping lights on all night? What a waste of money!

Why are you risking tripping over something in that dark hallway? Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen!

This unit turns on when it senses movement and even heat from a distance of up to 15 feet away! It turns off automatically after 30 seconds unless motion is sensed again! That's pretty darn efficient!

Give it up for infrared technology!

And check out the simple white case. It's solidly constructed and will fit with any décor!

You can even use it outside, just don't leave it exposed directly to the elements.

Oh! You need a continuous source of light? Just slide the switch from the AUTO to the ON position - DONE.

The LEDs are gonna last 100,000 hours so don't worry about replacing this unit anytime soon! Just 3 "AA" batteries keep it shining.

Its 3" x3" size makes it convenient to mount or set up anywhere. There's a cutout on the back so you can affix to a wall. And the 10 LEDs simply radiate from it's compact case. But have no fear… there's no lead or hazardous material of any kind in this baby!

And remember – The sudden motion-activated light will certainly startle potential intruders, but it'll bring you peace of mind!

Wally from NC asks:

I normally use Picasa for all my photo viewing, etc. When I look at any of my photos using Windows Photo Gallery all the photos have a brown tint like 'sepia'. Is there a setting I need to correct to fix this?

The off-color tinge is more commonly noticed by people who are using LCD flat panel displays to view their pictures. This sepia-effect happens whether you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7; it's the LCD monitor that is throwing the color off and not the operating system being used.

Switching the LCD panel with a non-LCD screen would be the quickest way to see if the brownish tint could be eliminated. However, instead of down-grading to an older monitor, there are some steps you can take to try and remedy the discoloration.

If using Windows 7, try the following adjustments:

image

Step 1 – Go to the Control Panel and click on View by: to expose the drop down box

image

Step 2 – Scroll down and select Small Icons to view

Step 3 – Once the icons are made smaller, there should be one labeled Color Management. Click to open this new window.

image

Step 4 – There are tabs located at the top of this new window. Select the tab labeled Devices and then locate your monitor on the drop down box next to Device.

Step 5 – After the selection is made, you'll want to check the box labeled Use my settings for this device.

image

Step 6 – Click the button labeled Add at the lower left of this Color Management window

Step 7 – A window with a list of profiles will appear. Select sRGB IEC61966-2.1 from this list and then click on the OKbutton.

image

Step 8 – Set this profile as the default option by clicking the Set as Default Profile button at the bottom right hand side of the Color Management window.

image

Step 9 – Close the Color Management window and reboot the computer

These 9 steps should remedy the issue of having a brownish tint on your pictures when using Photo Gallery with Windows 7.

Making a profile change in Windows Vista is very similar to the steps mentioned above. Here is a quick run-down on how to restore normal colors in Photo Gallery when an LCD monitor is being used:

Step 1 – Go to the desktop, right click, and select Personalize

Step 2 – From here, select Display Settings and click on the button labeled Advanced Settings

Step 3 – Go to the Color Management tab and click on the button labeled Color Management

Step 4 – When the drop down box is exposed, find the name of your device and click on it.

Step 5 – Click the box below the list of devices that has the words 'Use my settings for this device' next to it.

Step 6 – Click on the 'Add' button at the bottom of the screen and choose sRBG IEC61966-2.1 from the ICC profiles.

Step 7 – Once you've selected the proper profile, set it by clicking on the Set as Default button at the bottom of the window.

Step 8 – Keep clicking the OK button until you have exited each screen and then reboot the computer

If you aren't able to locate the correct profile under the section for ICC Profiles, then you'll need to download it. This profile can be downloaded from Adobe. The steps for completing this process are listed below:

Step 1 – Go to the Adobe downloads page.

Step 2 – Scroll to the very bottom of this page and locate the Adobe ICC Color Profiles under Other Downloads. You'll need to select Windows under the Adobe ICC Color Profiles category.

image

Step 3 – The next page displayed will give you an option to choose which type of ICC profile download you will need; for End Users or for Bundling. Most people will select End Users.

Step 4 – Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the button labeled Accept

Step 5 – Scroll down a short ways on the page and click the 'Proceed to Download' button, then continue to follow the prompts.

You will be downloading a zip file that will have to be accessed through a utility or the operating system on your computer. Once this zip file has been uncompressed, select the RGB profile desired. You'll need to right click to choose the 'Install Profile' menu item of your choice. This same action needs to be done in the CMYK profile folder too. You will be able to tell if the ICC profile you've chosen is already installed because the 'Uninstall Menu' will appear. Reboot the computer after making any changes.

Hopefully, these subtle changes will enable you to view photos in all of their modern bright colors, rather than vintage sepia.

Laser Vision: Bionic Eye A Reality

Have you ever seen science fiction movies where the hero (or sometimes the villain) has an eye replaced or augmented with a laser? This may have been crazy science fiction for some, but it also represented a dream for those who had lost the ability to see. Bionic eye implants have been tested and successfully implanted in people to allow for low resolution (usually 60 "pixels" or 60 grayscale dots) sight to distinguish door openings or large objects.

The problem so far has been that 60 pixels worth of vision doesn't provide much useful information. Sixty is slightly less than a 8 by 8 grid, and being able to tell one person from another at that resolution is very difficult.

Here is a simulated sample image made up of 64 pixels.

It gets better, though! Click here!

Definition - Buffer

image

If you've ever heard the term "buffer" before, you're probably wondering what it relates to. Well, a buffer is basically an area of memory hardware or software uses when it needs a constant, uninterrupted flow of information.

For example, if you've ever listened to any kind of streaming audio on the Internet, the program you use "buffers" the signal a little bit before it is actually played.

I've Always Wanted To Know:
Why Are Multi-Core Processors So Popular?

Answer:

Modern computer processors are designed to have multiple cores, basically smaller processors on a single big chip, which share resources and can process multiple bits of information at the same time. Why is this design better then one big processor? Why has it become so popular?

After installation, the first thing you'll notice when you launch it is that it will IMMEDIATELY upgrade to the latest version. Yep! No hunting for upgrades, and no outdated features. You get the latest and the greatest.

The second thing you'll probably notice is this:

Don't be surprised! This is a lot more common than you might think. Even EXPERTS can't prevent computers from degrading without software like System Mechanic. For everything you might know about your computer, there's at least a hundred more potential problems lurking around the corner.

But, now that you have System Mechanic, it only takes one click to get ALL those problems out of your life forever.

That "Repair All" button?

That's the one-way ticket to a lifetime of carefree, computer BLISS.

It's the perfect program for ALL levels of technical experience.

Either way, when you let System Mechanic do it's work, you're going to get to see this ray of sunshine:

It doesn't matter how good your computer was before. Now it's better and faster. You WILL be BLOWN AWAY. Stability, speed, and peace of mind.

Remember, it's never what you know that hurts your PC. It's the million little things you could have NEVER expected.

But nothing surprises System Mechanic. It sees every nook and cranny and makes them sparkle.

Want a sneak peek at how this incredible software gives your PC the power-wash you always dreamed of? If I tried to talk about EVERY feature of System Mechanic, we'd be here until the Sun burnt out. Get ready for some major highlights that'll have your jaw dropping.

Booting up your PC is always a pain. No matter what you do, you could cook a Thanksgiving dinner before your computer is done starting. It doesn't have to be like that.

By eliminating unnecessary or even HAZARDOUS programs from your startup, there'll be no more watching the clock, wondering when you can actually begin to use your computer. And without all these wasted resources going to unneeded programs, your computer will stay fast after booting.

Do you LIKE some of your startup programs? No worries. If you don't want System Mechanic to take control, you can go in and see each and every program it wants to disable. Regardless of which path you take, it's easy and fast to get your PC booting properly.

Oh, and do you ever get those annoying error messages when you boot up? Chances are after this, you'll never see them again! YES!

In addition to startup programs, there's ALWAYS just TONS of files and applications that end up on your PC. Sometimes they came installed with the computer, other times they sneak in through vulnerabilities or hidden in other software.

No matter how they go there, they are taking up GIGs of space!!

Don't worry, CRUDD Remover is on the job.

All this CRUDD (Commonly Redundant or Unnecessary Decelerators and Destabilizers) adds up into one giant, super slow, gunk of a mess.

Even if you knew what programs were the trouble makers, it would take AGES to manually hunt through and clean up all those files. System Mechanic removes the work and eliminates all that unwanted mess - in minutes!

Fully Controllable - You can make sure that System Mechanic doesn't remove anything you need to keep.

This thing is crazy. Not only are you going to get even MORE speed by removing all that useless junk from your PC, but talk about clearing space! Your hard drive has its limits, so taking this giant burden off its back is going to give you a lot more wiggle room for stuff you DO want.

Ever browse the net? Sure you do. Your computer has an "amazing" ability to hold onto a lot of useless stuff that you never even knew it saved. PC Cleanup has your back.

With the push of a button you can clean out tons of wasted space and temporary files that you didn't even know were there to begin with! WOW!

This is the ultimate solution to loaded hard drives.

You can get back hundreds of megabytes in storage space... heck, you might even get a couple GIGABYTES of space back. Maybe you won't need that $200 external hard drive you were thinking about.

Now you're saving space AND money.

Computers always manage to have a ton of errors without any indication of how to solve them. How can anyone expect you to fix a problem when all you get is a string of numbers and a giant OK button. Let System Mechanic take care of it for you!

From unintelligible error messages to mysterious lockups and even full-on system crashes, System Mechanic will find the solution.

The All-In-One Repair Tool came straight out of your dreams and now it's a reality. This program will AUTOMATICALLY fix pretty much any problem your computer throws at it. No error is too obscure for System Mechanic.

This is the total tune-up, repair, supercharge, computer fixing miracle.

EVEN IF YOUR COMPUTER WON'T BOOT PROPERLY! SERIOUSLY! You can use the System Mechanic CD to boot and recover your computer. It's a life-saver.

If just cleaning up junk didn't make your computer as fast as you wanted it, System Mechanic is only warming up. It's got a toolbox FULL of utilities to make your computer so fast it won't be street legal.

Designated Drivers - Out of date drivers can make your computer run sub-optimally, or sometimes make devices not work at all. Let this utility take the wheel for you and get all your drivers safely up to date.

Memory Mechanic - The more you use your computer, the more memory that will be taken up. Sometimes memory fragments or doesn't release properly and you run into problems that can even cause your computer to shut down. No more! Memory Mechanic will make sure your system memory is operating at full throttle!

Registry Tuner - Errors in system registry can range from causing lockups to total system failure. Registry Tuner will hunt through and clean up as many errors as it can find to get your PC running faster.

Registry Compactor - System Mechanic never leaves a job half-done. After cleaning out the registry, the compactor makes sure that the gaps left from removed bloat are closed so your computer doesn't waste time dialing through empty registry entries.

Just running ONE of these things is going to give you astonishing speed. But when you get them all going? Oh man, you're going to think someone slipped a supercomputer under your desk.

But that's not all, honestly it's barely even HALF of the performance tools alone.

Speed is great, but how about some raw, mind-blowing power? If you use some serious software, or even just want to get the most out of your PC as possible, System Mechanic has the adrenaline shot your computer needs!

EnergyBooster! Take your PC to the next level with this incredible tool. By automatically turning off unnecessary background programs, your computer's limited resources are going to be free to turn their attention to the tasks YOU need them on!

Don't let worthless background processes hog your memory or processor, use them how you want them.

If you do high-quality video, audio, web design, ANYTHING, you'll immediately notice how ridiculously fast EnergyBooster makes your PC.

Interested in something BRAND NEW? System Mechanic is always expanding its armory of tools and this version is no different.

With new AcceleWrite, you'll almost never have to worry about disk fragmentation again. By automatically ensuring optimal storage of files, the creeping slowdown that your computer experiences over time from disk defragmentation is a thing of the past!

It does the work for you, which means more time for yourself and a healthier life for your PC.

Slow Internet? That's when NetBooster takes the stage. Each Internet connection is unique and your computer can't be pre-configured from the factory for an optimal setup for YOUR system. NetBooster examines your current connection and makes those specific changes so you get MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE.

You'll see double, even TRIPLE speeds.

And remember, if you don't want to go through these individually, System Mechanic can do pretty much everything on its own. It's impossible NOT to get huge gains from running this software, and it's as simple as a few mouse clicks. What more could you ask for?

Especially nowadays, computer security has become a really big issue. You may think you're secure, but new vulnerabilities pop up ALL THE TIME! Even the tiniest of security holes can spell disaster for your privacy or your computer's ability to function. With so much on your computer, there's no excuse for taking risks.

With just one button, System Mechanic will comb your computer for security flaws and fix every single one it finds. Blocking off hackers from entry, you get peace of mind that your files and confidential information are safely protected.

You can NEVER be too secure.

After your vulnerabilities are patched up, what about other kinds of intrusions? Unwanted programs, viruses, or malware trying to hijack your system. System Guard will be the shield that keeps your PC defended and in tip-top shape.

System Guard does SO MUCH at once. If new programs try to add themselves to your startup, it will let you know. Dangerous programs trying to run? System Guard stops them IMMEDIATELY.

Browsing can be hazardous, but with System Guard, your computer and browser are protected from even the wiliest of hacking attempts. If you've ever had your homepage suspiciously changed or a new toolbar appear out of nowhere, you'll know how important System Guard is!

Privacy is just as important as vulnerabilities when it comes to security. With System Mechanic, you can make sure nothing you do gets to the wrong hands. With the Privacy Cleaner, anything you do can be erased, from browsing or search history to cookies and chat transcripts that websites or programs often automatically save.

Or maybe you need something deleted? I mean... REALLY deleted. The Incinerator will make sure any of your private files, from old taxes to company memos can't be easily recovered by ANYONE.

System Mechanic takes security seriously, and you can rest easy knowing you have the best programs protecting your PC and files.

System Mechanic is loaded with SO MUCH and if you want to, it can be COMPLETELY AUTOMATIC. But if you want to know exactly what it's doing, you can examine every tool to see what it intends to fix or change.

You'd be INSANE not to take advantage of all these amazing tools, but if you want to, you can pick and choose what you use and how you use it.

But that's not all. It comes with a tool to completely customize your PC's operations. From hiding unwanted icons to making your start menu react faster, there's almost nothing out of your control - AMAZING!

Seriously, there's STILL MORE! With your purchase of System Mechanic, you also get TWO additional programs that'll knock your socks off!

DriveScrubber - Had a virus, maybe some malware? Selling your computer or hard drive? Even if you think you deleted it, it may STILL BE ON THE HARD DRIVE. All it takes is rudimentary knowledge of computers to find ways to dig up those files you thought were gone forever.

DriveScrubber has MILITARY-COMPLIANT levels of erasing. Identity thieves are left out in the cold.

Search and Recover - Accidentally delete something? If you thought you lost a file on your computer, flash drive, or other devices like digital cameras, hold on! With Search and Recover, you may be able to retrieve the files you thought disappeared forever.

Unless you deleted them with DriveScrubber, of course.

These two free bonus programs usually sell for $30 and $40 respectively. And they ARE easily worth that much.

But you get them FREE with your purchase of System Mechanic! Yeah - $70 of programs - FREE!

System Mechanic looks too good to be true, right? Especially with all the extra free stuff, how can so much power be packed together into one amazing product? Well, you don't have to take our word for it! With over 36 million users and countless awards tell you all you need to know.

Talk About Award Winning!
