Quick Tip

Recycle Old Cartridges for $$$

If you are like me, few things depress you more than having to buy new ink cartridges. The cost per cartridge goes down if you have a printer that has separate ink cartridges for each color, but wouldn't it be great if you could turn those old cartridges in for recycling and get some money off your new ink?

Popular office supply stores OfficeMax and Staples both offer a cartridge recycling program where you can turn in old non-damaged cartridge for a $2.00 back in rewards per cartridge. There are limits to how many you can turn in and of what type, so check out the full program details below.

Thanks to Daniel Bienenfeld, one of our readers, for sending in this great tip on how to recycle and get something for it!

George from IN writes:

How can I get rid of AOL as the home page for Explorer 8? I want to keep AOL as a program, but not as the home page that opens automatically in Explorer 8. What can I do?

Hey, George - to change your home page in Internet Explorer 8 all you need to do is to go to a webpage you would like to be your new home page (for example http://www.google.com) then click on Tools > Internet Options > General and click Use Current.

You should now see http://www.google.com as your home page. Click OK, then close Internet Explorer. When you reopen it your home page should go to http://www.google.com (or whatever page you set it to.)

P.S. For an updated web browser (one which may run better than Internet Explorer 8), I would recommend downloading Mozilla Firefox by clicking here. Remember, you can have both Firefox and Internet Explorer installed at the same time, so you can always switch back to using Internet Explorer if you don't like how Firefox handles.

Critical Java Security Update

Have you heard about the new zero-day security exploit in the popular Java software? Chances are if you have a desktop or laptop computer you have Java installed – either by default or the first time you tried to access a site that required it. Hackers finding exploits in software is nothing new, but what makes this exploit so dangerous is that it's almost impossible to detect and there has been wide spread publication of how to use the exploit, resulting in many examples of hackers using it on the Internet.

So what do you do to protect yourself? Oracle, the makers of Java, have released a security patch. Your Java software updater should prompt you next time the java updated connects to the Internet that there is an update available. If you have not received this update you can download the latest patched version of Java by going to http://www.java.comand clicking Free Download or by selecting your operating system on the manual install page athttp://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp. If you are prompted that you already have the latest version of Java, then you are safe.

I highly recommend downloading and installing the update. If you are using a tablet or phone with Android or iOS there is no need to worry as the exploit does not affect those operating systems at this time.

P.S. To read Oracle's official security alert click here.

Become a Member of Linkedin

Linkedin is the world's largest professional online network available today! It has become what many job recruiters and job hunters are using to find employees and career openings, respectively. The concept is similar to that of other online social networks in which you create an online profile or user account. The only difference is that your online profile essentially becomes your online resume, which employers can use for recruiting purposes. Employers also have their own pages, which job hunters can use to help identify potential positions in which they may be interested. The Internet and online social networking has brought innovative ways to the whole process of finding a job in today's society.

First, log onto www.linkedin.com – you can make an account by typing in your name, email address, and creating a password. Next, a confirmation email is sent to the email address you entered, which you need to access in order to activate your account online.

Congrats, you have officially created an online professional profile! So what next?

Linkedin provides you with a "To Do" list in order to help set up your profile page with information most employers will want to see. For example, what industry you are in, your current job position, previous places you have worked, college degree(s), skill sets you may have, etc. You may also upload a picture of yourself if you would like that to appear on your public page. You can always go to any of these categories (Summary, Experience, Education, Personal Info, Skills) at any time if you wish to update or remove any information you have posted.

On top of the page, there is a toolbar that reads: Home, Profile, Contacts, Groups, Jobs, etc. If you click on home, it will bring you to the homepage, which will prompt you to add your email address to search for colleagues or people you may know on Linkedin to add as a "connection." You can type in and share any updates that you wish to appear under your username (similar to Twitter or Facebook), and the page will feature news that relate to your industry or area of interest.

If you click on Profile, you can either edit or view your page, manage or make any recommendations, or organize your profile. However, the profile organizer requires an upgrade of Linkedin – so we will not discuss that here. In terms of recommendations, you can ask colleagues, past or current employers, or even clients to endorse your current/past work so it will appear on your profile. You can also make recommendations for another user on Linkedin if you wish to promote his/her work. Recommendations can really help make a difference when employers are deciding if they want to recruit you.

Under Contacts, you can Add Connections. "Connections" will be your online user friends, or colleagues in this context. You can add classmates, employees, employers, faculty advisors–you name it! You can always add or remove connections, and you can search for connections using email addresses. Groups are a newer feature on Linkedin. Becoming a member of professional groups can help advance business goals and initiatives. For example, your current job position may have a Linkedin group that you can become a member of to help stay active in your current position and bring in more trusted connections and expand your network.

Under Jobs, there are a few options for you – to search for a job, a special category for students and recent graduates, posting a job (for employers), managing jobs, finding talent, and hiring solutions. The first option simply allows you to search for any type of job you are interested in using a general search bar. The "Job Seeker Premium" option requires an upgrade (fee involved for subscription plan). Talent Finder is meant to enhance your search for a job position based on your talents or skill sets, but this also involves an upgrade of your user account. Finally, recruiting solutions are meant for employers or job recruiters.

Next, there is your Inbox. Your inbox will display any messages you may have received or invitations for connections on Linkedin. A number displaying the amount of unread messages or invitations will be listed in a red box next to the Inbox tab. From here, you may also compose a message to send to any of your online connections. The next tab is Companies. You can search for a company from here or "follow" a company (similar to Twitter). If you choose to follow a certain company, you will receive updates and notifications from them on your main homepage. If there is a company you currently work for or are interesting in working for, following their updates can be a great way to advance your position.

Finally, the News tab will take you to a page that displays news articles tailored to your particular needs and interests. Any articles you have flagged or are following can be saved and accessed from here, and Signals will post updates or headlines of potentially open job positions. This is simply a start of what Linkedin can do or what it can mean for you. Open a profile today and get started on making those professional connections!

iPad – Show Me the Link!

One thing I've noticed about web browsing on a tablet is the lack of information I'm given – like when there's a word that links somewhere instead of a full address. In a regular web browser I can look in the info bar at the bottom and see where something goes – no problem.

OpenOffice.org Writer: A Few Special Symbols Without the Insert Menu

We all know that when you're trying to insert symbols (other than the standard ones available on the keyboard) into a document you end up in the Insert menu, Special Character choice.

This leads you to the Special Characters dialog box, where you can peruse a multitude of symbols to insert… and while nobody needs to use them all, there are some that are more useful than others such as a copyright or trademark symbol.

The good news is that for these special characters you'll find no need to use the Insert menu since the key combination that will cue the AutoCorrect feature to kick in are super easy to remember.

Amanda's Coolsite

Get More Out of Google

While this infographic is geared towards helping college students do online research using the Google search engine, it is also an infographic that can help anyone search with Google.

Navigation is an easy scroll down the page.

The first thing you'll learn is how to find the information you want from a Google search. The first section of the infographic is How to Google where you'll learn how to use the following operators in your searches:

site: the site you want to find the information on
" " put quotation marks around the terms you're using to find the exact phrase
- using the dash or subtraction sign will exclude the words following it from the search
~ the tilde allows you include related words in your search
.. putting two periods or dots between numbers will allow you to search a date range
filetype: this helps you find a specific type of file (great for image searches)
intitle: this will only show results with the following word or words in the title
* the asterisk replaces itself with common terms in your search

The second section of the infographic is Google Scholar, a handy resource for students to find academic and scholarly secondary sources, that will teach you the operators: author: and how to further use quotation marks to get the information you want out of the search. It also shows you the best order to put your search terms in.

The next section is Other Google Tricks where you'll learn about using the Google search engine to define, calculate, and do unit conversions. Then you'll find the handy Keyboard Shortcuts section. It is setup for Macs, but if you replace command with ctrl for a lot of the tips it will work.

Now you'll find yourself at the end of the infographic where it offers a few remaining research tips for students. If you are a student, don't forget to use your college or university's library, the research librarians at your school have access to more information than you do as a student. I wouldn't have made it through either of my capstone projects last year without my librarian's help.

This is a great page to bookmark for later reference. Check it out today!

Screenshot Machine

Have you wanted to take a screenshot of a web page and have it be the size you want without having to edit it?

Well now you can with the Screenshot Machine! The best part is that you don't have to create an account to use the site! If you want to sign up for an account you can do so by clicking Premium Services and then the Sign Up button under Free. Then just fill out the form with the required information and click the Sign Up button.

All you have to do is type or paste in the URL of the website you want to take a screenshot of, then select the size you want it to be (full page, 1024 x 768, 800 x 600, 640 x 480, 320 x 240, 200 x 150, and 120 x 90), and click the Start Capture button.

The application will then go grab the screenshot and make it the size you requested, then you just click the download button. For me, this opens in another tab (I use Google Chrome), then I right click to save the image. It's just that easy!
