Speak UP Sonny...I Can't Hear You!

Hearing is a funny thing. We take it for granted when we're young and sorely miss it when it starts to fade. Of the many, many reasons our hearing starts to fade over time, age and lifestyle are the main culprits.

Maybe your career has been in noisy construction. Maybe you've been to one too many rock concerts. Or maybe age is finally catching up with your eardrums. Regardless of the reason, we can help!

You've GOTTA HAVE these Things!

Hear Clear Sound Amplifiers are basically the equivalent to a BRAND NEW set of ears! Discreet and comfortable, they were developed with comfort and functionality in mind.

Comfortable AND Discreet!

The small receiver is about the size of a pager (remember those?), and the comfortable earbuds actually sit inside of your ear to ensure a comfortable fit without being obvious that you're wearing something.

Go ahead - clip the receiver onto your hip. Or put it in your pocket. Once these thing are in your ears, it's going to open up a whole new world of CLEAR HEARING!

Simple to Use - AMAZING RESULTS!

DID YOU HEAR THAT?! Seriously, these are simple to use and yield unbelievably clear results. Even with perfect hearing, you wouldn't be able to clearly hear a conversation going on 60 feet away - but you can with these!

Stick the battery in, turn it on and you're all set! There's also an adjustable volume control depending on the level of intensity you need. So, let's just say you're at a bingo hall, or church - crank that volume up, and hear everything!

If you're just sitting home watching television or having dinner with your family, simply adjust the volume to accommodate your needs. That's it!

Perfect for Anyone - You Don't Need a Hearing Problem to Need These!

This is important! Even if you have "20/20" hearing, it's guaranteed that you'll find a use for these! Here's just a small sampling of people who could use the Hear Clear Sound Amplifiers:

College Students: If you've ever sat in a huge lecture hall, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
It's kinda hard to hear the professor when you're in an auditorium the size of a football field!

Church Goers and Bingo Players: Really, any extracurricular activity that lands you in an auditorium type setting. Even a movie theater! Whether you're hard at hearing or not, if you're too far away from the action, you won't be able to hear!

International Spies...Well OK - this is just an example; but if you've ever wanted to discreetly hear a conversation going on oh, say 60 feet away...just put these on and adjust the volume!

ANYONE With Hearing Problems: Naturally, that's who these were made for! Keep these with you at all times and pop 'em in when you need to. You'll be BLOWN AWAY by the clarity, comfort and quality!

Comes in a Two Pack - An INSANE Value!

Buy today, and you're not just getting ONE set - you're getting TWO for the price of one! We searched high and low to find this deal, and it's only good for a limited time! So if you're having any trouble at all hearing, or if you'd just like to be able to hear better in ordinary circumstances - these are EXACTLY what you need!

Computers 101

George from IN writes:

Something has caused our desktop computer to stop "reading" jump drives inserted into the two frontal USB drives. It isn't a problem with the jump drives themselves, because they function fine in a different computer. Is it likely that the problem is anything other than physical damage to the USB drives?

Hi, George.

I'm a little confused by your question. At the end when you said "physical damage to the USB DRIVES" did you actually mean "physical damage to the USB PORT"? I ask this because your jump drives ARE your USB drives.

At a guess, I would say that there are two possibilities. There would have been three, but you're already well on your way to troubleshooting this by checking the jump drives themselves. If they're working, as they seem to be, then you've eliminated that problem.

My next guess would be that your USB ports have failed. I don't know how old your computer is, but this happens with time. The way to troubleshoot the ports is to try plugging another USB device into each of the ports. Something simple like a USB-powered light would be best, because that gives you immediate feedback. Plug it in, give it thirty seconds or so for the computer to recognize it, and see if turns on. If the light works in both ports, then I'd say that it's time to take your machine and your jump drives into your friendly neighborhood computer repair center and let them have a go at it. If your computer doesn't recognize it, or the light won't come on, then you've probably got a failed USB port. If the light works in one, but not the other, then plug your jump drive into the one that the light worked in, and see if it works.

Once you've determined that it's your USB port, the next thing that you have to do is determine if it's a hardware failure or a software problem, which would probably just be some kind of junk (that's a technical term) in the driver for the USB port.

The first step in troubleshooting this is to open your device manager. There is a way to do this through the control panel, but for my money, it's much easier just to open it through the search. The way to do this is to click Start then, in the search box, start entering "device manager" without the quotation marks. It will probably populate before you even have "device" entered.

Click on Device Manager, and that will open the manager for you. At or near the bottom, you should have an entry that says "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Click on the arrow to the left of this to expand your USB devices.

What you're looking for are your USB hubs. Count the number of entries here and see if they match up to the number of USB ports on your computer. In the example, I know that I have four USB ports on my computer, so there's no hardware failure on my machine. If you have four USB ports, but only two are showing up in your device manager, then two have failed. If the USB ports are not hardwired into your motherboard, and you're comfortable doing it, then just open your machine and reseat the USB port cord onto your mother board. IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE OPENING YOUR MACHINE AND DOING THIS, THEN HAVE A PROFESSIONAL DO IT. When I was doing computer repair, a lot of hardware errors were attributable to people messing around with the hardware who didn't know what they were doing. You can do a lot of damage here fairly easily. If reseating them doesn't work, replace them.

If they show up in your device manager, but still don't function, it could still be a hardware problem. The USB port will still register correctly, but the surface inside the port may have become damaged, rendering it impossible to read the devices.

The final option, if they are showing up in your device manager but not functioning, is that the driver may have become corrupted. The best way to take care of this is to uninstall and reinstall the driver. The way to do that is to right-click on all of your USB controllers and then click "uninstall".

Once you've done that, reboot your computer so that it can install new driver software software. Vista and 7 will do this automatically, while XP will require you to follow a series of on-screen prompts.

Hope that this helps.

From The Archives

Sharon, from Nevada asks:

I have the Vista Premium Home Operating System. I used to have a clock that I downloaded from the Microsoft sidebar site. It worked for about 1 1/2 years. Now all of a sudden, it won't work. I have tried other clocks on my sidebar and experience the same problem. It sets up perfectly and within a few minutes it stops. Can you tell me how to correct this problem? All of my other side bar items are working correctly.

Sharon, for what it's worth, you're not alone. Many people appear to be having similar problems with their Vista sidebar gadgets (particularly their clocks). I found several potential causes, along with recommended solutions for each. The cause that appeared to be the most common, and the one that required the least disruptive solution, is one involving Internet Explorer 8 (IE8).

Apparently, Windows IE8 updates are occasionally wreaking havoc with Vista sidebar gadgets, so we will address that issue. This will involve uninstalling IE8 so, if you don't have another browser installed, you may want to consider installing another one before going any further. You'll find links to three different browsers below. All are free and all work very well.

Today's Feature

Veign Usage Monitor

If your PC is running slowly, the cause may be resource gobbling programs using too much memory. To determine if that's the case, check the Windows Task Manager (keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Esc), which monitors running processes. Click the Performance tab to see how much total memory the system contains (Physical Memory Total-center left), and how much is being used (Physical Memory %-bottom). While there's little agreement about optimum memory use, somewhere between 50% and 80% seems an acceptable limit.

Kids Health

Welcome to Kids Health, a Web site that is separated into three parts so that everyone can get the most out of it! The sections are Parents, Kids and Teen.

Parents – In this section, the first thing you'll notice is probably whatever is being featured at the moment. While I was there, it was the issue of cutting. To the right of the featured article, you'll find a menu.

The sections on that menu are: General Health, Infections, Emotions & Behavior, Growth & Development, Nutrition & Fitness, Pregnancy & Newborns, Medical Problems, Positive Parenting, First Aid & Safety, Doctors & Hospitals, In the News and En Espanol.

Beneath the featured article, you'll find the Daily Q&A as well. While I was there, it was about how you should sleep while you're pregnant and why. I also noticed on the strip that scrolls across the bottom that you can click into a section for teachers, where you'll find help with lesson plans and activities.

Kids – On the main page, you'll find the spotlight section. While I was there, it was about Crushes. Crushes goes through and dissects what a crush is, how children might be feeling and what to do about it.

On the side menu, you'll see a lot of sections. A favorite of mine is "Dealing with Feelings." That section gives kids a lot of scenarios they may be in and it discusses how they may be feeling and why. The other sections are: Staying Healthy, Recipes, Everyday Illness and Injuries, My Body, Growing Up, Kid's Talk (a Q&A section on a lot of different subjects), Watch Out, The Game Closet, Kid's Health Problems, WORD! A Glossary of Medical Terms, Health Problems of Grownups and En Espanol (which allows you to access it in Spanish).

People, Places & Things That Help Me – I left this section off the list, because I wanted to talk about it a little more in depth. This section teaches children about People (Therapist, Doctors, Dentists, School Counselors), Places (Hospital, Emergency Room, Operating Room) and Things (Shots, Medicines, Casts, Glasses and Contacts, etc.) they may have to experience during a time in their childhood.

Teen – There is a bounty of wonderful information here that I really wish I had access to as a teen. For example, Body Beautiful in the lower left corner answers questions and teaches you about body image.

This section specifically targets teen issues, as you can tell from the side menu. The categories are: Your Mind, Your Body, Sexual Health, Food & Fitness, Recipes, Drugs & Alcohol, Q & A, Diseases & Conditions, Infections, School & Jobs, Staying Safe and En Espanol.

There was a great article on confidence while I was there. It was at the top of the page and was titled "Kayla's Story: Alopecia." Kayla has Alopecia, which is an autoimmune disease that attacks the hair follicles. In spite of her hair falling out, she has retained her confidence and still feels beautiful! She even won a beauty pageant and competed for Miss Delaware, where she finished fourth.

Kids Health is a site filled with helpful health information for all ages. It certainly is one you can explore with your children or send your children to for answers. Check it out today!
