Quick Tip

Full-Screen Facebook Picture Viewer

Are you ready for another Facebook change? This one isn't as wide-reaching as the much complained about "Timeline" feature, but I'm sure it'll still ruffle a few feathers.

It has to do with the Facebook picture viewer, which we've covered before.

This addition, called the "full-screen" option, allows you to view your friend's pictures at their maximum size. Now when you view a picture on Facebook, look the upper right-hand corner – you'll see a dual arrow icon. Simply click it, and you'll enter a full-screen version of the picture viewer.

To exit, hit ESC, click the X in the upper-right corner, or (in the meantime, at least) click the "Exit full screen" option.

Even more ch-ch-ch-ch-changes!

Computers 101

Michelle from SC writes:

I had to have my computer reformatted last month. Now when I do a disk cleanup it shows "previous windows installation(s)" (34.6 GB) as one of the option boxes for the disk cleanup. Is it safe to tick this box or should I leave it alone?

When you format your system and upgrade from an old version of Windows to a more recent version (e.g Windows XP to Windows 7), Windows stores the previous system files in the "Windows.old" folder. When you perform a custom installation of Windows 7 on a drive but do not format that system partition, the old system folder is automatically renamed from "Windows" to "Windows.old". The result is nothing but two folders (Windows and Windows.old), as shown in the following example screenshot:

Windows Old Folder

The answer to your question is Yes, you can safely get rid of the Windows.old folder, provided you arecompletely sure that you won't need the older settings, program files or your documents. It is a good idea to open the "Documents and settings" folder under "Windows.old" and recheck your My documents, My pictures and other important system folders. If you are sure that you have already backed up everything from your old operating system to the new one, there is no reason why you should keep the "Windows.old" folder and waste precious disk space.

Disk Cleanup

There are two ways to permanently delete the old Windows folder. Either use Disk clean up or select the "Windwos.old" folder and hit "Shift + Delete". It's that simple, but like I said, you should double check all the contents of the Windows.old folder for important programs, files or documents from the older Windows installation.

Increase Battery Performance of Android Phones

Does your Android phone battery run out of gas in a short duration, like under 4 hours? If yes, this tip is meant for you. Here you will learn to increase your battery performance by analyzing your phone use and identifying applications that are sucking your battery dry.

Before we get into making changes, did you know that Android provides a screen that shows exactly what's draining your battery? If you did, good for you. If you didn't, let it be known that Android phones actually provide this functionality! To see what's using the battery, go to Settings > About phone > Battery use. The screen shot below shows an example of the Battery use screen.

From The Archives

Darla from Boston, Massachusetts asks:

I have a couple of programs that I use a lot. I also like using keyboard shortcuts. Is there any way that I can make my own shortcuts for the ones I use the most?

Hi, Darla.

Yes, there most certainly is a way to make keyboard shortcuts for any application that you would like to make one for. And it's easy to do!

Okay, I use WinRAR a lot, so let's make a shortcut for that.

First, go to your Start Button and left-click. Then left-click on All Programs.

Today's Feature

Making Pictures the Right Size

What's the "right" size for a picture? Well, that depends on the photo. Most monitors display at 72 dpi (dots per inch). So, if you want the picture to be 5 inches wide (probably about the biggest you would want for an e-mail message), the picture would be 360 pixels wide (5 inches x 72 dpi = 360 pixels).

Pixel is short for "Picture Element" and is the smallest unit of visual information used to build an image. If you have ever zoomed in on an image, Pixels are those little squares that you see. The more pixels in an image, the better the resolution.

Amanda's Coolsite

NIH Senior Health

Welcome to the National Institute of Health's site for Senior Health information.

I love that this site was designed with seniors in mind; the font is easily changed between three sizes and you can even change the contrast colors of the site so it is easier to read.

You'll find two important menus – the one at the very top of the page (containing the categories Health Topics A-Z and Video A-Z), and the menu right on the main page that lists health topics by their first letter from A to Z. I love that they've made the Health Topics doubly accessible. You'll also find a lot of great information featured on the main page like exercise stories, health video, and the link to sign up for e-mail updates.

To begin navigating I'd suggest either clicking the letter of a health topic you are curious about or checking out the video topics. When you explore a topic you'll find lots of information, images, and links to more information – or even quizzes to help you fully understand the topic. If there is a video for that topic then you will find that too!

This site is a great place to look into health topics that affect seniors. Check it out today!

Connect ALL of Your Computers to One BLISTERING FAST Router!

All Routers Are NOT Created Equal!

So there you are, thinking that your 802.11 N router is the best you can get. It's not really all that fast, but as far as you know it won't get any better.

So you go on with your computing life, meandering through your work, surfing the net, etc. but you can't help but wonder if there's something better out there. Something with FULL THROTTLE speed. Something that gives you a whole lot of convenient options.

As you can guess - we've got it! It's a router like NONE that you've ever seen before! You've gotta check out what this thing can do for you!

Most important first, right? So yes, this router is 802.11 N compatible. The newest and fastest type currently available on the market. But there's something that REALLY sets this one apart from the others.

See, most of the new routers you get today come with 100mbit speed. Not bad, but not great, either. You still find yourself waiting longer than you'd like, downloads take too long, etc. You'd think with all this new technology that they'd be able to perform faster...

Well guess what? This router is powered by GIGABIT SPEED - WHICH IS 10X FASTER THAN 100MBIT!

Did you catch that? This router is 10X faster than the other 802.11 N routers! That's going to make a huge difference, don't you think?

Dual USB Ports - Connect & Share Everything!

This is about to blow your mind! On the back of this router, you'll find 2 USB ports. Go ahead and connect a flash drive, a hard drive, a printer - whatever - and this will share it with all computers running on that network!

For example, let's say you're at home using this router. There's 4 other computers in your home being used by other family members. You have some important info on a flash drive that you'd like to share with everyone on the network. What do you do?

Plug the flash drive into the back...AND EVERYONE ON YOUR NETWORK IS ABLE TO AUTOMATICALLY HAVE ACCESS!

That's right - anything you plug into the dual USB ports will show up on all computers on the network under a "shared hard drive" granting them FULL access! It's a brand new, amazing upgrade to ALL existing routers!

4 Wired Ethernet Ports!

You'll LOVE this. See, maybe you have a couple of older computers at home. Well guess what? With this router, you can directly connect them using ethernet cords, and they'll be able to share that speed!

This is especially useful if you have a few older computers around the house that you only use on occasion, for particular projects that don't require wireless connection. Well, now you can have the best of both worlds!

This router is all about sharing, and it's all about high speed. Perfect!

The Specs Will BLOW YOUR MIND!

So now that you know what you're getting, let's go ahead and sum it all up.

802.11 N access - 300 Mbps Transfer Rates - As good as it gets!
Gigabit Speed - 10X FASTER Than Standard 100mbit Speed!

Bison Calf And Flower

I found this little guy roaming along the roadside with his mom (and about 300 other bison) in Custer State Park, SD. He was pretty playful and cooperative, so I stuck with him for a bit just to see what would happen. Glad I did! He discovered this thistle and flower and just couldn't stop messing with it. At first, he was... (more)

This one is pretty simple. I don't do a ton of macro shots, but in the spring, I just can't seem to resist dragging out the 200mm macro lens and hitting the blossoms a bit.
