Resistance to change is universal, with even the most innovative among us determined at some point to maintain the status quo. This resistance is especially evident in users' loyalty to the Windows XP operating system. Released in October 2001, XP became by September 2003 the most widely used Windows OS, and remained in the lead until July 2011, when it was finally overtaken by Windows 7 (released October 2009). The long-anticipated but wildly unpopular Vista (released in 2006) barely registers in usage statistics. However, as of April 2014, Microsoft will discontinue XP support. What this means, according to Microsoft, is " there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates." There has also been, and will likely continue to be, a lack of XP support from independent software and hardware manufacturers. So, while an unsupported Windows version will continue to function, in the increasingly dangerous and complex world of technology, in order to remain safe, it may be time to prepare for the inevitable, and consider other options. One of them is to upgrade an existing system. To determine whether your system will support Windows 7, Microsoft offers theWindows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which scans for compatibility issues and offers recommendations. Of course, another option is to purchase a Windows 7 computer, or wait for the release of Windows 8. Rod from Delaware writes: Can I get rid of those balloon tips that pop up when my cursor is hovering over something in the start menu? I have Vista Home Premium Edition. Because you were kind enough to write to us (and because it was still bugging me), I decided that no matter what, I would answer your question for both of our sakes. And guess what? With just a little help from the internet and a lot of common sense, I can answer your question. Just so you know (and for future reference): The tips that you're talking about (the ones that pop up by the clock) are called screen tips. The place on the lower right corner of your screen next to the clock is called the notification area. Here's the breakdown: Screen tips: The "balloons" or bubbles that pop up when you hover over an icon in the notification area. (The notification area is on the right side of the Taskbar, next to the clock.) Screen tips: The "pop-ups' or balloons that pop up when you hover over a desktop icon. Screen tips: The "balloons" that hover over a Start menu item at the top of the right pane, such as Documents, Pictures, Music, Games, etc. If you would like to understand the concept of all different kinds of tips being the same one a little (not a lot) more, clickhere. Since you are running Vista Home Premium, I will show you how to get rid of the screen tips in the Start menu in the home editions of Vista. I will mention here, too, that if you get rid of screen tips in the Start menu, the pop-ups over the desktop icons disappear, too. There may be other places, as well; I haven't seen any others that have disappeared, but I may not have run into them yet. In other words, Windows made it so that you can't disable getting rid of screen tips in one place alone. (Just so you know.) Warning: The next steps involve editing the Windows registry. If you're unsure of how to proceed, please consult a professional! You have been warned! If you want to edit the registry in any way, we recommend backing it up first. Things that happen in the registry cannot be undone and can wreak total havoc your system. Click here to learn how to back up your registry. Okay, before we begin: I usually start these kinds of tips by showing you with a screenshot how to go to the Start button, and then the Run box. I may have mentioned it a couple of times; if you would rather use a keyboard shortcut, just typeWin + R (Win being your Windows key) and your Run box will pop up. If you still would like to access it through the start menu, the example is below. Type regedit in the Open line. Left-click on OK. This brings up your Registry Editor. Under My Computer, navigateto this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Explorer /Advanced Note: If you would like to learn more on navigating the registry, click here. To do this, just click on the little arrow to the very left of the HKEY_CURRENT_USER line. You will now see a long list of little folders with arrows. The next thing you're looking for is Software; go down the list until you see it, and then click on the little arrow to the very left of it, just as we did above. Keep doing this until you get to the end of the command (which is Advanced). Okay, we have arrived at the place we need to be, to get rid of the screen tips in the Start menu. In the example below, you see two panes. The left pane is where we just were navigating; Advanced is highlighted. In the right pane, scroll down until you see ShowInfoTip. Double-click on it. After you double-click on ShowInfoTip, a box will pop up. Under Value data, enter 0 (zero) in the box. Click on OK. Exit the Registry Editor by clicking on the X in the upper right-hand corner, or going up to File and clicking on Exit in the drop-down menu. Log off, and log back on. No more pop-ups in the Start menu! Note: If you want to re-enable the screen tips, just do exactly what we did in this article, only instead of putting a zero in the box, you will want to put a 1 (one). Remember: Putting a zero in the box means it's disabled. ~ Lori Cline Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!

Sharepod It has been a little more than ten years since the first iPod appeared on the horizon, and since then Apple has made it extremely easy to fill up our iPod's with music on the fly. However, the going's not so easy when it comes to exportingmusic out of your iPod. What if you want to backup your entire music collection from your iPod onto your desktop? Apple gives us no option to do that via iTunes. What do we do then? Sharepod is the answer. This free program lets you get songs out of your iPod and into your PC. Additionally, Sharepod also helps you manage your iPod without using iTunes at all. Even things like editing song info and album art. As far as backing up music is concerned, you can click on the "Backup iPod" button to copy everything back to your computer. That's not all, Sharepod gives you the option to backup individual songs or playlists as well. Just select the song/playlist and click on the "copy to PC" to button. One of my favorite summer activities as a kid was going fishing with my dad. I can remember driving out to one of the reservoirs in Findlay, Ohio one summer with him and my little sister in tow. We stopped at McDonald's for an early lunch of Happy Meals, and then went fishing. I never caught anything I'm a very poor fisherman, but what I do remember is my dad patiently answering the dozens of excited questions I asked during our trip. He told me all about blue gill, perch, walleye, bass, and catfish. The memory of that trip has been on my mind lately, and got me to thinking about fish. I still have a lot of questions and when I went looking for the answers to those questions I found this site. Navigation is a little different than most sites. There aren't any menus at the side or top of the page instead the sections are laid out in center of the page divided up by category. You just scroll down and click on the facts or questions that interest you. The categories are Miscellaneous Fish, What is the FishFAQ?, Salmon FAQs, Lobster FAQs, Crab FAQs, Shark FAQs, Shrimp FAQs, Shellfish FAQs, Cetacean FAQs, Pinniped FAQs, Turtle FAQs, and don't forget to check out the Ew, What's That? picture and scroll to the bottom of the page to find the answer. I just started with the first question and then clicked the Next fish button at the bottom of the page to navigate through the other questions from start to finish. You can also use the FAQ fish button at the bottom of the page to navigate back to the main page. Throughout the articles on this page answering questions you'll find a great facts, interesting tidbits, and even awesome photographs. That's why I got swept up and navigated through the site from start to finish. Go check it out for yourself today! http://www.nefsc.noaa.gov/faq/index.html ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com
Ever Wish You Could Travel Back in Time? We've all had instances in our lives where we'd give anything to be able to go back and do something from the past differently. Maybe you missed the lotto jackpot by one number. Maybe you turned down what would have been a life-changing opportunity... Or maybe your computer crashed and you lost everything - WHEN ALL YOU NEEDED WAS A SIMPLE BACK-UP PROGRAM AND EVERYTHING COULD HAVE BEEN RECOVERED - Files, software, programs, everything on your hard drive! You just can't understand how awesome this is until a system crash inevitably happens to you - you won't believe how easy it can be to restore everything on your hard drive with this one amazing program!
Guess What? It Happened To Me - Windows Died. Yep, me - the one whose ALWAYS telling people how important it is to back everything up no matter what. So, did I end up eating my words? Do I have egg on my face? NOPE. I used LapLink Disk Image, baby! That system crash picked the WRONG computer to mess with! See, my Windows 7 did the old crash & burn - it happens to everyone sooner or later. It was completely crippled. My data was gone. My programs disappeared. My system needed to be COMPLETELY restored. Now, there's a few ways you can go about doing this, and they all go badly. Very, very badly. It's Not a Matter of IF - It's a Matter of WHEN! Hard drives are mechanical. They spin. It's 100% GURANATEED that eventually, your computer is going to crash. Just like it's inevitable that your car will need repairs eventually. And when it does crash...You lose EVERYTHING! A Computer Crash Can Be DEVASTATING... Oh, and what about your software? You can spend DAYS trying to locate and reinstall your old software! Months, even! But after all that hard work, you're almost guaranteed not to have everything you did before the crash. And good luck trying to recover those old serial numbers to prove that you indeed bought that software at some point. Who just keeps that stuff lying around? Nope - if your computer crashes, you're gonna burn... Let's face it: a system crash is inevitable at some point. Be it in the form of a crash, malware or a virus. What's going to happen to all of your files, software and programs? How long will it take you to recover and reinstall everything? How much money would it end up costing you? It's going to be a miserable experience... Unless you have LapLink Disk Image, of course. Then everything is fine! Computer Crashes No Longer Mean a Thing! Before we get to any of the specifics with this program, there's a couple of things you should know: this program is very easy to use (anyone can do it) and the bottom line is this: LapLink Disk Image makes an EXACT copy (image) of your hard drive. If your PC crashes and you've used this program first, you can restore EVERYTHING back to the way it was when you did the backup by sticking the disc in and letting it do it's thing! This image can be created on another hard drive, an external drive, a zip drive, a set of CD's or DVD's - whatever works for you. It's fast and couldn't be easier to use - IT RUNS DIRECTLY THROUGH WINDOWS! That's right: software, files, programs, pictures, music...EVERYTHING! Whether you accidentally downloaded a terrible virus, are experiencing a massive PC crash, got a ton of malware, have a PC that won't start - whatever - if you've used Disk Image, you'll have access to everything you backed up before your PC kicked that digital bucket. Restore Individual Files! This is TOO cool! Disk Image allows you to restore individual files as needed! Let's just say you accidentally deleted an important file. Or somehow, you managed to corrupt a bunch of pictures you had saved on your computer. Disk Image allows you to restore ANY file you want - YOU get to pick and choose! Simply pop your disk in and choose which file to reinstall. It's laid out right in front of you, and it's a quick and easy process. No matter what happens to your files, hardware, pictures - whatever - you can rest assured that it's safely backed-up and ready to be reinstalled whenever you need to! Creating Back-Ups has NEVER Been Easier! And speaking of getting a new computer...maybe you're not aware, but most newer computer's don't come with a Windows restore disk anymore! Nope, the almighty dollar must be more important to them than customer loyalty...so get ready to shell out an extra 40 bucks on top of that new computer cost. OR use Disk Image - and restore windows on all your programs on your computer! Look at that - this program has already paid for itself! DON'T BE FOOLISH: MAKE A COPY OF YOUR SOFTWARE WITH EASE! Added Bonus: Makes Adding A Larger Hard Drive Super-EASY! Eventually you're going to run out of hard drive space. This happens to pretty much everybody, that's why external HD's are sold everywhere. Now, maybe a better idea would be to actually just put in a new, larger hard drive - but that's normally the kind of thing that would even give Stephen King nightmares! Ahh, but if you have Disk Image, it's a snap! Just create an image of your current system onto the new drive and BINGO - Install the new drive and everything is just like it was before the upgrade - except now you have all the extra space! Sweet! I'd say this alone is more than worth the cost of the program! Talk About a BRILLIANT Program - Just Look at these Features! Let's just sum this up, shall we? This might seem like a big bad program, but trust me - it's simple to use, powerful, and it WILL save you time, money and sanity! Check it out: THE BEST PART: It's EXTREMELY user friendly with a simple-to-follow wizard! Anyone can use this amazing program with ease! Save Yourself a TON of Misery for a VERY SMALL PRICE!
