| Windows 7 Password Hint So you pride yourself in coming up with amazingly secure, yet difficult to remember passwords, huh? Well, bully for you, I guess until the day your brain skips a gear and you can't remember how to log into your computer anymore. Sure, there are plenty of "password hackers/unlocker" programs out there, but sometimes all you need is a little nudge to remember. So, next time you decide to change your Windows 7 password, add a hint - just in case! Click Start, and in the search box type User Accounts click on the result that appears, and in the next window, click Change your password. Go through the motions of typing your old password in, then your new one and a confirmation. Now in the bottom box add a hint that helps, but does not give away completely, your new password. Click the Change password button at the bottom when you're done. Now the next time you forget your password and type it incorrectly, you'll get a little hint to help you remember! ~Andrew Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- Joel from Solomons writes: Where can I get drivers for old devices designed for windows 98? To find drivers for older versions of an operating system the best bet is to try to find the manufacturer's website and search there. If you cannot find them on the manufacturers website (or the manufacturer isn't in business anymore) your next best bet is to turn to Google. The best way to search is to include either the manufacturer part number or unique hardware identifying numbers, plus Windows 98 and driver. For example, Google search: "hp laserjet 4l" + "driver" + "windows 98″ This will search for HP Laerjet 4L and driver and Windows 98 all in the result. If you just type "HP Laserjet 4L driver Windows 98″ you may get a lot of results that mention HP driver or HP Windows or Laserjet Window,s but not exactlywhat your looking for. Note: Make sure to run any older driver you may download through a virus scanner first, as some nefarious websites will use the lure of a working driver for an older product to convince someone to bypass this important security step. ~Tim Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

5 Key Features You Need To Know About On Your Mac Apple has spent a lot of time trying to simplify their operating system so almost anyone can use it, which has lead to them being able to put in some cool features although the only problem is that most people don't know how to use them or how to get to them. So in this article I'm just going to uncover 5 features that you should definitely know about when using a Mac. Dock The dock is what the Apple operating system is famous for; everybody recognizes it. It is the "thing" that holds your apps at the bottom of your screen. When you minimize a window, it will go down into the dock, waiting to be maximized again when you want to use it. The far right holds your recycle bin, which cannot be moved, and the far left holds the finder window, which (again) cannot be moved. All the other icons are movable and can be replaced with ones that you may use more often. If you want to get rid of an icon, simply click and hold the icon and drag it off the doc. Similarly, if you want to add something to it simply click-and-drag the icon onto the dock. Spotlight Spotlight is a fantastic search feature that Apple built into the OS. You can use it to search for anything you want from files, songs, browser history and even definitions of a word from the built-in dictionary. You can access Spotlight with the magnifying glass in the top right had corner just click on it and begin your search. It's great if you forget where you saved a file. System Preferences If you're new to Mac, system preferences is the Mac equivalent to the Windows control panel. Here you can configure absolutely everything you need, from language settings, mouse and trackpad settings to customizing your desktop or even adding a printer. The way you access it is through the Apple icon in the upper-left corner and then selecting system preferences. Once you are there you can go ahead and configure the settings on your Mac to your liking. App Store Since the App Store on the iPhone was so successful, Apple decided to introduce the same principal to the Mac. It works on a similar principal to the iPhone, which means you can look for the app that you think will help you or will do the tasks that you need it to, with descriptions and everything. With one click you can download and install it onto your computer. There are thousands of Apps to choose from, and it is fast becoming the go-to place for all Mac applications. How to get to the App Store: The should be a round "A" icon in your doc. Select it and you will have the App Store window load. It's that easy! The App Store looks something like this: Launchpad Launchpad is the icon in the dock with the rocket on it, simply click it and you will be shown all your Apps that you have installed on your Mac. It works much like the iPad, allowing you to launch an application quickly and easily. Any application you install using the App Store will appear in launchpad. What about off-site storage and cloud storage? Off-site and cloud-based storage are a great way to backup information you need to a remote place, just in case the unthinkable happens. "What kind of unthinkable things could happen, Tim? I backup to a external hard drive connected to my computer so I'm safe, right?"
So what can you do to protect the REALLY critical non-replaceable information? The best way to handle this is to have cloud-based or off-site storage. Cloud based storage transfers certain information (usually a directory you choose) to a company's servers and syncs that information with every computer that logs on to your account. The most popular of these services is Dropbox, which offers 2 GB of storage for free and plans starting at $9.99 a month for 100 GB of data. The great thing about Dropbox is that it's as simple as saving files to your Dropbox folder the rest is done automatically. You can even access your files by logging into your Dropbox account on the web. Dropbox with 2 GB of storage is available for free byclicking here. Off-Site storage works very similar to cloud storage, but usually includes full system backups and more storage space. Off-Site storage isn't meant so much to share and sync files between computers as much as it's meant to backup your files in case of complete system failure. The simplest off-site storage is the physical kind where you put a USB flash drive or external hard drive in a safe at the bank or a friend's house after your done copying files to it. The online method of Off-Site backup involves transferring your files over the internet to a company's servers. Companies such as Mozy, which offer 50GB for $5.99 a month or 125 GB for $9.99 a month, provide software that will automatically backup your files and information to their servers over the internet. Mozy also offers some benefits, like automatic backup, encrypted backups and online file restoration functions not generally available with regular cloud-based sharing sites. Mozy offers a free trial available by clicking here. Which service is right for you? Well that depends on the amount of information you want to backup and how you want to manage the data transfer. Personally, I store an external hard drive in my bank's safe that I transfer files to once a month, but the convince factor of a service like Dropbox or Mozy is making me think about signing up. ~Tim Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? In short Gail, the answer to that would be yes. Think of your laptop battery in terms of a car's engine. The harder a car works, the more gasoline it uses and the more energy your laptop is putting out, the more juice it is sucking from its battery. A chill mat is a thin device with fans on it that goes under the laptop. The fans blow cold air up into the laptop in order to keep it cooled. You see, in all actuality, the chill pads are very beneficial. Did you know that your computer running all the time and getting warm will actually cause your laptop battery to wear out sooner? It's true. Get the whole story here! (Want these tips in their entirety? Sign up for Premium!) For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter.
The other day I was thinking about how much I missed owning a bicycle. I left mine in Lorain when I moved to Toledo, and it got lost in the shuffle when my parents moved to house they currently reside in. Lately, I've been considering purchasing a new bike and in my research online to figure out what kind of bike I wanted I found this site. When the page loads you'll see an amazing timeline of bicycle history. To navigate just scroll down; the timeline begins with The Walking Machine, an 1817 invention by Baron von Drais who wanted to travel more quickly around the royal gardens. It ends with a description of the different styles available today under the Current Scene. Then it offers suggestions for further reading. Each stop along the timeline explains the innovation of that step in bicycle evolution along with inventor and manufacturing details as was available for each kind of bike. The entries also include images of each bike and an explanation of the culture that sprung up around it, for example: The Velocipede or Boneshaker lead to the creation of indoor bicycling rinks. This site offers a great look into the history of bicycling, so check it out today! http://www.pedalinghistory.com/PHhistory.html ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- Along with collecting shells as a kid, my sister and I also had a great rock collection. I can still remember doing my science project in middle school with an amethyst geode. Now my collection is mostly of materials that can sit around my house and look beautiful until I make them into jewelry like labradorite, different colors of quartz, agate, onyx, and opals. Navigation is a little complicated on the site because the landing pad of the web page isn't the main menu. To get to the main menu, click either Enter Here or Table of Contents. You'll be whisked off to a huge menu filled with different sections devoted to information about rocks, minerals, collections, a glossary, crafts, experiments, and more! Another interesting section you can get to from the main landing pad is Pictures of Rocks. Click it and you'll be presented with an alphabetical menu to images of rocks and minerals. You're also offered the option to look at rocks and minerals via location also listed alphabetically. ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com DON'T LET THIS ILLUMINATING OFFER SLIP THROUGH YOUR HANDS!!
