Nishat from Bangladesh writes: What is the difference between a domain and a domain controller? Can you please explain? Networking terminology can be quite confusing, especially for individuals who don't have a degree in computer science or networking. One of the main reasons for the confusion is that some of the terms have other meanings in the computer world. For example, the term domain, which applies to a network of computers, is also used as slang for an Internet domain or domain name server. While domains and domain name servers are completely different entities, referring to them by the same name confuses many people. In terms of networking, a domain is a group of connected computers that can be accessed from a central server or servers. All the computers within a specific domain share a common set of security rules; however, individual users can be granted specific rights within the domain. The term domain is typically only used when discussing Windows-based networking and is set up using Active Directory on Windows-based machines. The term domain controller is used to denote a computer within the domain that controls the rest of the computers in the domain. From the domain controller, a network administrator can access networked computers, create or delete accounts, or manage privileges and security. In many networks, the file server and domain controller are one in the same, but this is not a requirement. Although a domain controller can be quite helpful, especially when dealing with larger domains, it is not required. There are both advantages and disadvantages to using a domain and domain controller, so it's up to the network administrator to determine whether the use of a domain and domain controller is beneficial for your network. Advantages of Using a Domain and Domain Controller When a network has hundreds or thousands of networked computers, a domain is necessary to connect them. Although a domain controller is not absolutely required, it makes it easier for administrators to diagnose problems, create new accounts and modify permissions. Without a domain controller, someone would have to physically go to each computer to accomplish these tasks. This would be an impossible task if the computers within a domain were located in different physical locations. When managing file permissions on one or more servers or computers without using a domain controller, the network administrator would have to create the permission sets on each of the computers that would be sharing files and edit all of them any time there are changes. This can be quite time consuming, which is why it's beneficial to set up a domain and use a domain controller. Disadvantages of Using a Domain and Domain Controller Generally speaking, smaller networks do not need to bother with domains or domain controllers, especially when all the computers are located within one physical location. Permissions and accounts can easily be handled on smaller networks without the hassle of a domain controller. Networks of computers that do not use a domain controller are often referred to as peer-to-peer networks and permissions and accounts are set up on each computer within network. When using a peer-to-peer network, each user needs to have an account set up on each computer he uses, whereas with a domain and domain controller, a user can log into any user within the domain using his password. Another downside to setting up a domain is that not all operating systems are designed to connect to a domain. Unix and Linux-based systems, for example, cannot connect, and some companies have programs that require these operating systems to run. The Windows XP operating system was also not designed to connect to a domain. Although there are workarounds for Windows XP machines, it is just one more hassle for a network administrator to deal with. Hope that helps! ~Chad Stetson Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- Hazel from TX writes: I am curious
I recently got a new computer and am concerned about the capacity of the hard disc drives
example You don't have to worry, Hazel the D: drive (especially if it's named something like HP_Recovery or Recovery) is a part of your hard drive partitioned off and given its own drive letter to enable you to restore the computer to factory new condition should something happen. Manufacturers used to be required to include a copy of Microsoft Windows on CD/DVD, but now if they build in the functionality to restore the computer using a recovery partition they don't need to. This saves the manufacturer money, and (in theory) makes the computer a little bit cheaper for you. You may be prompted within the first two weeks by your computer to create a set of recovery DVDs. I would HIGHLYrecommend making these, because if your hard drive fails you will also lose the recovery partition. Remember: If you use the recovery option it will reset your computer back to factory new. On some recovery programs it can save data, pictures, files and e-mail, but on most it will wipe out everything, so always make backups! I would recommend Laplink Disk Image and an external hard drive so you know all your important files are saved. ~Tim Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Also, guess who started poking around and saw a significant decrease in performance in his new iPad mere hours after booting it up? Yeah that's me. I can't begin to express my excitement over Curiosity successfully deploying on Mars there just aren't enough words! I mean it's Mars! Science! It's like every nerdy science-fiction-of-the-future dream come true! We're exploring Mars! See what I mean? I just can't contain myself. I knew that I had to share Curiosity Cam with you because it has had my rapt attention since the sixth of August. Navigation is easy there is a main video window with a menu of other videos to the right. I have to take the GRE (the exam for grad school), pass two CLEP tests (to get course credits), apply to grad schools, and deal with a full course load. It's going to be stressful, but I hope very much that it is going to be worth it. I also know it's going to stress me out, and I've already suffered a bad bout of anxiety before the the first week of class even got here the grad school application process seems overwhelming, so I went looking for stress relievers and ways to relax and found this site. Calm is a website that offers you the opportunity to take (at the very least) two minutes to relax, and at the most ten minutes of relaxation. Navigation is easy just click start and the relaxation experience begins. You can choose to customize your experience by selecting the background image and sound, whether you want music to play, and whether or not you want guidance. To select your background image and sound, mouse over the bottom of the page. There you will see six different images that have sounds to match. My favorite is the fifth one of the waterfall. I find that sound particularly soothing. The two minute experience helps to teach you to stop and relax. You'll focus on your breathing, close your eyes, and just relax. I like this when I need a quick boost of energy because it makes me feel more alert and focused after doing it. I do this one with the music off, but the guidance on. The ten minute experience I like to use when I'm very anxious, stressed out, or angry. It makes me very relaxed and able to let go of what's bothering me. I like to do this one with guidance and the music on rather than the babbling of the water. They recommend using headphones, but I didn't have any around to try out. I've just been doing the relaxation sessions in my computer chair at home, but as I am more mobile over the course of the semester I'll probably use it at school with my headphones. I hope you find this is a good relaxation tool for you too!
