If I tried to talk about EVERY feature of System Mechanic, we'd be here until the Sun burnt out. Get ready for some major highlights that'll have your jaw dropping. Booting up your PC is always a pain. No matter what you do, you could cook a Thanksgiving dinner before your computer is done starting. It doesn't have to be like that. By eliminating unnecessary or even HAZARDOUS programs from your startup, there'll be no more watching the clock, wondering when you can actually begin to use your computer. And without all these wasted resources going to unneeded programs, your computer will stay fast after booting. Do you LIKE some of your startup programs? No worries. If you don't want System Mechanic to take control, you can go in and see each and every program it wants to disable. Regardless of which path you take, it's easy and fast to get your PC booting properly. Oh, and do you ever get those annoying error messages when you boot up? Chances are after this, you'll never see them again! YES! In addition to startup programs, there's ALWAYS just TONS of files and applications that end up on your PC. Sometimes they came installed with the computer, other times they sneak in through vulnerabilities or hidden in other software. No matter how they go there, they are taking up GIGs of space!! Don't worry, CRUDD Remover is on the job. All this CRUDD (Commonly Redundant or Unnecessary Decelerators and Destabilizers) adds up into one giant, super slow, gunk of a mess. Even if you knew what programs were the trouble makers, it would take AGES to manually hunt through and clean up all those files. System Mechanic removes the work and eliminates all that unwanted mess - in minutes! Fully Controllable - You can make sure that System Mechanic doesn't remove anything you need to keep. This thing is crazy. Not only are you going to get even MORE speed by removing all that useless junk from your PC, but talk about clearing space! Your hard drive has its limits, so taking this giant burden off its back is going to give you a lot more wiggle room for stuff you DO want. Ever browse the net? Sure you do. Your computer has an "amazing" ability to hold onto a lot of useless stuff that you never even knew it saved. PC Cleanup has your back. With the push of a button you can clean out tons of wasted space and temporary files that you didn't even know were there to begin with! WOW! This is the ultimate solution to loaded hard drives. You can get back hundreds of megabytes in storage space... heck, you might even get a couple GIGABYTES of space back. Maybe you won't need that $200 external hard drive you were thinking about. Now you're saving space AND money. Computers always manage to have a ton of errors without any indication of how to solve them. How can anyone expect you to fix a problem when all you get is a string of numbers and a giant OK button. Let System Mechanic take care of it for you! From unintelligible error messages to mysterious lockups and even full-on system crashes, System Mechanic will find the solution. The All-In-One Repair Tool came straight out of your dreams and now it's a reality. This program will AUTOMATICALLY fix pretty much any problem your computer throws at it. No error is too obscure for System Mechanic. This is the total tune-up, repair, supercharge, computer fixing miracle. EVEN IF YOUR COMPUTER WON'T BOOT PROPERLY! SERIOUSLY! If just cleaning up junk didn't make your computer as fast as you wanted it, System Mechanic is only warming up. It's got a toolbox FULL of utilities to make your computer so fast it won't be street legal. Just running ONE of these things is going to give you astonishing speed. But when you get them all going? Oh man, you're going to think someone slipped a supercomputer under your desk. But that's not all, honestly it's barely even HALF of the performance tools alone. Speed is great, but how about some raw, mind-blowing power? If you use some serious software, or even just want to get the most out of your PC as possible, System Mechanic has the adrenaline shot your computer needs! EnergyBooster! Take your PC to the next level with this incredible tool. By automatically turning off unnecessary background programs, your computer's limited resources are going to be free to turn their attention to the tasks YOU need them on! Don't let worthless background processes hog your memory or processor, use them how you want them. If you do high-quality video, audio, web design, ANYTHING, you'll immediately notice how ridiculously fast EnergyBooster makes your PC. Interested in something BRAND NEW? System Mechanic is always expanding its armory of tools and this version is no different. With new AcceleWrite, you'll almost never have to worry about disk fragmentation again. By automatically ensuring optimal storage of files, the creeping slowdown that your computer experiences over time from disk defragmentation is a thing of the past! It does the work for you, which means more time for yourself and a healthier life for your PC. Slow Internet? That's when NetBooster takes the stage. Each Internet connection is unique and your computer can't be pre-configured from the factory for an optimal setup for YOUR system. NetBooster examines your current connection and makes those specific changes so you get MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE. You'll see double, even TRIPLE speeds. And remember, if you don't want to go through these individually, System Mechanic can do pretty much everything on its own. It's impossible NOT to get huge gains from running this software, and it's as simple as a few mouse clicks. What more could you ask for? Especially nowadays, computer security has become a really big issue. You may think you're secure, but new vulnerabilities pop up ALL THE TIME! System Guard will be the shield that keeps your PC defended and in tip-top shape. System Guard does SO MUCH at once. If new programs try to add themselves to your startup, it will let you know. Dangerous programs trying to run? System Guard stops them IMMEDIATELY. Browsing can be hazardous, but with System Guard, your computer and browser are protected from even the wiliest of hacking attempts. If you've ever had your homepage suspiciously changed or a new toolbar appear out of nowhere, you'll know how important System Guard is! Privacy is just as important as vulnerabilities when it comes to security. With System Mechanic, you can make sure nothing you do gets to the wrong hands. With the Privacy Cleaner, anything you do can be erased, from browsing or search history to cookies and chat transcripts that websites or programs often automatically save. Or maybe you need something deleted? I mean... REALLY deleted. The Incinerator will make sure any of your private files, from old taxes to company memos can't be easily recovered by ANYONE. System Mechanic takes security seriously, and you can rest easy knowing you have the best programs protecting your PC and files. System Mechanic is loaded with SO MUCH and if you want to, it can be COMPLETELY AUTOMATIC. But if you want to know exactly what it's doing, you can examine every tool to see what it intends to fix or change. You'd be INSANE not to take advantage of all these amazing tools, but if you want to, you can pick and choose what you use and how you use it. But that's not all. It comes with a tool to completely customize your PC's operations. From hiding unwanted icons to making your start menu react faster, there's almost nothing out of your control - AMAZING! John from FL writes: Is there one brand of CD that is considered better than others? Also, would a DVD be better to record information on? This is a question not a lot of people think of because they assume CD/DVDs will last forever. Guess what? It's not true! Regular CDs and DVDs degrade with time and exposure to the elements. So what do you do to keep them as long as possible? Let's start with what you can do with regular CD/DVDs.
So what CD/DVDs do you want to buy if you're concerned about long-term reliability? When looking for archival CD/DVDs, you should pay attention to what the reflective layer is made out of and what dye is used. This information can be found in the manufacturers specifications for the disc. The best discs are made using gold as part of the reflective layer. You can identify them by the manufacturer indicating just gold is used. They can be found online for $2.00 a piece in packs of 25. These are rated for 300 years of storage in archival grade storage conditions. The second best style of CD/DVD are gold/silver hybrids which will mention both gold and silver, and can be found online for a bit cheaper (usually $1 to $2 per disc) in smaller packs. The lowest quality of archive discs will be silver only. These are better than traditional discs, but not by that much. Usually these cheaper discs are sold for under $1.00 each. Each of the above types of reflective layers can be made using different types of dyes. The best type of dye to look for isPhthalocyanine, the second best is Azo and the worst performing is Cyanine. As far as CD vs DVD, there isn't a difference in physical media that I know of in terms of lifespan though by nature of there being less information stored on a CD it may be better to lose less of the "total" if you have 10 CDs and one goes bad versus all the information on one DVD. If it was me, I still might just make 3 copies of the same DVD just in case. ~Tim Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- Manny from Detroit asks: In Windows XP is there any ways I can add Notepad to my right-click "Send to" menu? But of course! Some time or another you will have some kind of a file that you know is just plain text. If you do it a lot, then you know that it can be kind of a pain to keep going into the Start menu and opening Notepad (the simple text editor that comes with Windows) and browse to the file each and every time. This tip will show you how to open the file in Notepad all in one shot by using the "Send To" function. Okay. Where is "Send To"? You know when you right-click on a file somewhere on your computer and you right-click a folder to get it to do something quickly? Say you want to print a document, copy a document to another folder, if you read the list, "Send To" is an option. Right-click it. Depending on how your computer is set up, there will be different areas that you can send that file to. Mine looks like this: If you notice, Notepad is not on the list. Here's how to get it there. First, go to your Start button and right-click it. This will bring up a menu. At the top you will see Open, and underneath it you will see Explore. You will see that Start Menu (on the left side) is highlighted. Notice that a couple of entries up (on yours it may even be directly above it) you will see "SendTo". Click on it so that it is highlighted and you will now see all of the shortcuts that are on the "Send To" menu are in the right pane. Now right-click on the right-side pane and highlight "New" and then select (left-click) "Shortcut". On the "Create Shortcut" window, type in "notepad.exe" for the box "Type the location of the item", and then click "Next". On the next window, type in "Notepad" for the box "Type a name for this shortcut", and then click "Finish". That's it! Now when you right-click a file, you will see the Notepad shortcut and will be able to read those text files with just a (right) click of your mouse. Try it. I think you'll like it. : ) ~Lori Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!
Google Chrome for iPad You know me, I'm a big Google Chrome fan. It took awhile for it to catch on, but once I experienced the speed and simplicity, all of my browsing standards were soon switched over. Take my iPad, for example. Google just released Chrome for mobile devices, but alas, my smartphone isn't quite up to snuff to be able to run it. But my trusty, new iDevice is! Get it all here! (Want these tips in their entirety? For the rest of us though, some of these basics are still new and uncharted terrain. The following article on setting an Android alarm is for them (us). Fortunately, the alarm setup hasn't changed significantly, so these instructions for Android 4.0 should work similarly on most recent versions. The first step in setting an alarm is to tap the home screen clock. Or, if no clock is displayed on the home screen, choose it from the apps section and tap Set alarm. Another option (in some versions) is to use the Voice Actionfeature to set an alarm by speaking into the device. Finish this tip here! (Want these tips in their entirety? Sign up for Premium!)

Every month I attempt to snag a Phat Fiber mystery box (a box filled with either yarn, fiber, or yarn and fiber samples that provides indie dyers a way of getting samples of their products into the hands of crafters) and usually I'm not fast enough but my roommate has lightning fast, ninja clicking skills and succeeds at getting one. This month's theme was Arabian Nights, which meant that as the dyers shared their photos or the stories that inspired them, I was getting inspired to re-read the Arabian Nights. We read parts of it in World Literature, but I really wanted to dig in deep and read more than just those excerpts, so I went looking for a good site that would let me do that. Here's what I found! What is The Arabian Nights? Well, it's a collection of folktales passed down over the centuries from Persian, Arabian, and Indian origins. I really liked this collection of stories put together by the Electronic Literature Foundation. You'll find navigation on the left side of the page. There are two ways to navigate the stories: You can use the navigation form beneath the menu and set it to the type of content you are looking for (View Tale for the stories), the edition you want to read, which tale you want to start with by number, where you'd like to start or end, and the pagination. or you can click on the Contents page and view the entire listing for the translation you selected in the navigation form. To get the Burton translations, I set the navigation form edition slot to Burton, and then clicked Go then I clicked Contents at the bottom of the page that loaded and found myself whisked over to the Burton Contents page. Each translation is divided up into 34 chapters, with illustrations by Earle Goodenow. You can turn the illustrations off on the navigation form by selecting none under the preferences drop down menu. The menu is set by default to Goodenow, though. I loved reading the folktales in The Arabian Nights and hope you will too! http://www.arabiannights.org/index2.html ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version --- One of my favorite activities as a kid was going to the beach. We had two that we visited regularly in my hometown. We did most of our swimming at Lakeview Park, because the zebra mussels took over Century Park and it was no longer conducive to swimming because of having to walk on the shells. At Lakeview Park there were less shells and a lovely sandbar you could swim out to. While the focus is on beaches around America (like Find Your Beach), there is also a lot of practical beach going information that can be used anywhere in the world, like human health, pollution, do's and don'ts, and sun safety to name a few. Navigation is pretty standard the main page has a Highlights menu that features Basic Information, Plan a Trip, and Beach information just to name a few things. Near the bottom of the page you'll find a large navigational menu divided up into three categories. They are: Learn About Beaches, Plan a Trip, and How We Protect Beaches. If you're trying to find your closest beach, click Find Your Beach, and then type in your City, State, or Zip Code into the search box. This will show you a Google Maps style map of your area with the beaches marked. You can then zoom in and see if there is an advisory, whether the beach is historical, or even if the beach is closed! Use the legend in the lower left corner of the map to decipher the different meanings. This map feature is really cool! One of the highlights I wanted to share with you is Beach Kids. It has games, activities, and information about pollution and beach safety. It is a neat way to teach your kids all about beaches. http://water.epa.gov/type/oceb/beaches/ ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com HATE Your Weak Wireless Connection?
