Quick Tip

Windows 7 Password Hint

So you pride yourself in coming up with amazingly secure, yet difficult to remember passwords, huh?

Well, bully for you, I guess – until the day your brain skips a gear and you can't remember how to log into your computer anymore. Sure, there are plenty of "password hackers/unlocker" programs out there, but sometimes all you need is a little nudge to remember.

So, next time you decide to change your Windows 7 password, add a hint - just in case!

Click Start, and in the search box type User Accounts – click on the result that appears, and in the next window, click Change your password.

Go through the motions of typing your old password in, then your new one and a confirmation. Now in the bottom box add a hint that helps, but does not give away completely, your new password.

Click the Change password button at the bottom when you're done.

Now the next time you forget your password and type it incorrectly, you'll get a little hint to help you remember!

MP3 Player

There's a ton of portable media devices out there, and they're pretty much all for just music or just video. You've got one for your music, one for videos, an e-Book reader, maybe a camera nearby, and even a portable radio of some sort, too.

Can you imagine carrying all of that around all the time? Talk about weighing yourself down.

You need to consolidate all that into one tiny, hand-held miracle. And we've got JUST the thing.

Get ready to empty your pockets, because this MP3 player is going to replace pretty much EVERYTHING you're used to carrying.

First off, it's a 3" touchscreen display. That means easy-to-use and the sleekest design out there. No giant panels covered in twenty different buttons. With that touchscreen you have access to ALL the cool features it comes with.

Smooth simplicity.

MP3 Music Player!

As you would expect with any MP3 player, this thing can store so much music for you and playing it back is easy. It supports pretty much any audio file you'll have, from MP3 to WMA.

You don't even need headphones to enjoy your music. The built-in speakers let you share your tunes with anyone.

The standard device stores up to 4GB. And if that's not enough, you can pop in a microSD card of up to 8GB to expand that to a whopping 12GB of storage!

That's a lot of music, pictures, or video.

Prefer the radio? No problem! Just press the radio button and find a station! Pop on the included headphones and enjoy your personal pocket radio.

Plus, the record button lets you record your favorite broadcast to listen to whenever you want!

Doing everything never looked so easy.

Photos and Videos!

With a 5MP built-in camera, you'll ALWAYS be ready to take the perfect picture. It even comes with some special you can use!

Or maybe you want to record some video? Easy! You can record up to 25 HOURS of videos. And it comes with cool effects like sepia or black and white for your recording!

It even PLAYS videos. Show off your own recordings, or transfer videos from your PC to watch wherever you go. Supporting AVI, MP4, and FLV, whatever video you have, you can probably bring it with you.

It's a webcam too! Seriously, this thing does it all. Hook it up to your PC and activate the webcam mode and you've got yourself one little do-it-all device that'll have your socks blown off.

No need for a bulky camera or webcam ever again.

We aren't even done yet! This baby is packed FULL of useful or fun extras that'll blow you away.

Pocket Library - With an eBook and TXT reader, you can bring a bookshelf worth of reading material with you.

Free software! Take advantage of Arcsoft's incredible MediaImpression 2 program to organize and edit your media on your PC. Also included is Ematic's own video conversion software to make sure your videos will play on your amazing new MP3 device.

Computers 101

Tom from CA writes:

Follow up on the storage drives question. What about off-site storage and cloud storage?

Off-site and cloud-based storage are a great way to backup information you need to a remote place, just in case the unthinkable happens.

"What kind of unthinkable things could happen, Tim? I backup to a external hard drive connected to my computer so I'm safe, right?"

  • What if there is a fire and the hard drive melts?
  • What if thieves steal the PC and the backup drive?
  • What if your backup drive is hit by the lightning surge too?

So what can you do to protect the REALLY critical non-replaceable information? The best way to handle this is to have cloud-based or off-site storage.

Cloud based storage transfers certain information (usually a directory you choose) to a company's servers and syncs that information with every computer that logs on to your account. The most popular of these services is Dropbox, which offers 2 GB of storage for free and plans starting at $9.99 a month for 100 GB of data. The great thing about Dropbox is that it's as simple as saving files to your Dropbox folder – the rest is done automatically. You can even access your files by logging into your Dropbox account on the web. Dropbox with 2 GB of storage is available for free byclicking here.

Off-Site storage works very similar to cloud storage, but usually includes full system backups and more storage space. Off-Site storage isn't meant so much to share and sync files between computers as much as it's meant to backup your files in case of complete system failure. The simplest off-site storage is the physical kind where you put a USB flash drive or external hard drive in a safe at the bank or a friend's house after your done copying files to it.

The online method of Off-Site backup involves transferring your files over the internet to a company's servers. Companies such as Mozy, which offer 50GB for $5.99 a month or 125 GB for $9.99 a month, provide software that will automatically backup your files and information to their servers over the internet. Mozy also offers some benefits, like automatic backup, encrypted backups and online file restoration functions not generally available with regular cloud-based sharing sites. Mozy offers a free trial available by clicking here.

Which service is right for you? Well that depends on the amount of information you want to backup and how you want to manage the data transfer. Personally, I store an external hard drive in my bank's safe that I transfer files to once a month, but the convince factor of a service like Dropbox or Mozy is making me think about signing up.

MS Word: Including Paths and File Names In Headers and Footers

If you've ever looked at a hard copy of a document and wondered "Now where did I save this?" then you want to know this one.

One of the most sure-fire ways to ensure that you know how you saved the file is to include the path (file location) and file name in the header or footer of the document.

With that in mind let's take a look at where we can find such things in our newest versions of MS Word.

Today's Feature

Kerry from Lancaster, OH asks:

Is there any way to lock a folder in Windows?

Thanks for the question, Kerry. As far as I know, there are no folder lock features designed into Windows, but the article,Finding Hidden Folders, describes a built-in way to limit access.

Word Grabber

I am seriously addicted to Words With Friends. I started playing with my college friends to kill time before class and now I play mostly with family. I like that it allows me to interact with people I love, but don't get to see as often as I'd like. What I don't like is getting stuck trying to think of word when I have unfavorable tiles. The game likes to generate all vowels for me a lot. I've shared other word finder sites with you before, but I found Word Grabber and I think it takes the cake when it comes to helping players out.

Why is it so awesome? Well, it doesn't focus on just one word game. You can get help with specific games like Scrabble, Words With Friends, Word Feud, and you can also get help with more general word things like anagrams, letter sorting, and another Scrabble helper called Grabber. You'll also find articles on word games, word games for kids, spelling with numbers, leetspeak, and so much more!

But I brought you here for the generators! How do they work? What makes them more awesome than the others I've shared before? Well when the main page loads click on Words With Friends Cheat. It will take you the generator page where you'll discover you have quite a bit of control over how it generates words for you to use. (Note: Scrabble Helper, Words With Friends, and Word Feud all use the same style of generator.)

You type in the letters of your game piece tiles in the first text box labeled letters, then in the second text box you can decide what pattern you want the letters to generate in (check out the quick guide that is available a bit lower down the page to see what pattern options are available). Now, select how many blank tiles (if any) that you have, and whether you want the words sorted by points (point value) or length (how many letters they are comprised of). Finally, click the green Grab It button.

The Anagram Solver has a different generator where you input the letters and it will unscramble them in to as many words as can be made with all the letters. You can choose to sort them by alphanumeric or letters. The Letter Sorting Generator is similar to the Anagram Solver except that you can also dictate a pattern in the way it unscrambles the letters.

The Grabber generator is more a generic scrabble helper where you input letters, select the number of blank tiles, and the word database you want to use (TWL or SOWPODS).

This is a great site to bookmark for all your word game needs! I mostly use it to get out of the aforementioned vowels of doom situation and to start brand new games.
