Quick Tip

Hey, all you YouTube users out there. Have you ever wanted to skip ahead in a video, but you didn't want to wait for thebuffer bar to load all the way to your favorite part? Well, here's a neat little trick to help you skip directly to a specific timestamp!

All you have to do is put the time in at the end of the URL in the address bar using this formula #t=XXmYYs (Where XX represents minutes and YY represents seconds).

So, if your favorite part of a video starts at 2 minutes and 15 seconds in, you'd input #t=02m15s at the end of the URL. Like this:

Then, all you have to do is press Enter and the video should start at the timestamp you specified!

How cool is that?

Wanna See Your Laptop Blow Up?

Didn't Think So!

But If You Don't Protect It from Surges...

KAAAA-BOOOOOOM!

Super Convenient In-Line Laptop Surge Protector

Keep Your Laptop, Files, and Sanity Intact

Your PC is probably hooked up to a surge protector, right? The price of one is a fraction of replacing your whole PC. Everyone knows it only takes one bad storm or electrical mishap to turn your favorite desktop into a bulky paperweight.

So you definitely have one on your laptop too, then, right? You don't? ARE YOU CRAZY?!

Laptops are just as expensive as home PCs, sometimes even moreso, and you might find they're at even HIGHER risk than your computer for surge damage!

Think about it... how many times have you plugged your laptop in to charge at some shady hotel? A restaurant? A conference room? Airport? Even your OWN HOUSE? Every time you plug in could be the one time (and it does only take one) where bad wiring causes your laptop to turn into a melty pile of plastic.

I know what you're gonna say, too... "You expect me to carry around a bulky surge protector?" NOPE!

These surge protectors have the most AMAZING design to give YOU protection without the bulky annoyances. All you do is take the surge protector and plug it in between your main power cord and the adapter. And... you're done. Now just go about your business as usual.

Protection and convenience are an unbeatable combo.

That's not even all! These tiny wonders come with Thermal Overload Protection... that means additional protection for your laptop from drawing to much power or from a socket that has too much sustained voltage.

Bottom line? More safety, fewer melted laptops.

It doesn't matter where you go, you'll have the peace of mind knowing that your laptop is safer. Your music, your documents, and especially irreplacesables like family photos will have that extra line of defense against being lost forever.

So how much does it cost to safeguard your laptop from electric doom? Not much. At only $9.97 with FREE US SHIPPING, it's a no-brainer. Compare that to buying a brand new laptop... and all the priceless files you'd lose.

Just choose the protector that fits your laptop. There's two-prong or three-prong connectors.

For HP, Compaq, Dell, Panasonic, Acer, or any laptop that plugs in with a 3-prong connector:

For IBM, Toshiba, Sony, Gateway, NEC, or any laptop that plugs in with a 2-prong connector:

PS - These are going to sell lightning fast. If you don't grab one quick you're going to get caught when these go up to $14.97 on Friday!

Computers 101

Hazel from TX writes:

I am curious…I recently got a new computer and am concerned about the capacity of the hard disc drives…example
HP_Recovery (D:) has 1.33 GB free out of 10.9 GB and OS (C:) has 412 GB free out of 454 GB Should I be concerned that the D: is almost full?

You don't have to worry, Hazel – the D: drive (especially if it's named something like HP_Recovery or Recovery) is a part of your hard drive partitioned off and given its own drive letter to enable you to restore the computer to factory new condition should something happen.

Manufacturers used to be required to include a copy of Microsoft Windows on CD/DVD, but now if they build in the functionality to restore the computer using a recovery partition they don't need to. This saves the manufacturer money, and (in theory) makes the computer a little bit cheaper for you.

You may be prompted within the first two weeks by your computer to create a set of recovery DVDs. I would HIGHLYrecommend making these, because if your hard drive fails you will also lose the recovery partition.

Remember: If you use the recovery option it will reset your computer back to factory new. On some recovery programs it can save data, pictures, files and e-mail, but on most it will wipe out everything, so always make backups! I would recommend Laplink Disk Image and an external hard drive so you know all your important files are saved.

On The Move

Chuck asks:

Are there any free Android apps that can edit Word documents? I've found several that offer viewing, but no editors.

Thanks for the question, Chuck – and, yes there is such an app. Kingsoft Office for Android (2.1 and above), enables users to view, create, and edit Microsoft compatible documents including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In fact, the greatest difficulty in writing about Kingsoft Office is choosing which of the numerous features to cover. Your question about editing Word documents simplified matters. Of course, as user friendly as they've tried to make this app, editing documents on a phone can be impractical (and a little difficult), but convenience occasionally trumps practically. For example, having a work-in-progress document at your fingertips during a long commute can make productive use of what might otherwise be down time (not that there's anything wrong with a little down time). Also, for those who prefer to work in a more comfortable environment, Kingsoft Office is available for Android tablets..

Amanda's Coolsite

Post Punk Kitchen

I'm not a judgmental cook or eater, so provided people don't try to push their culinary point of view down my throat and tell me how wrong, wrong, wrong (!) my food choices are, I'm a happy camper. If you're a vegetarian or a vegan, I will go out of my way to provide you with an option of something you can eat. I prefer to be inclusive, rather than exclusive, and I have several vegan friends who asked if I could use my site finding skills to find them vegan recipes. I went through a lot of sites before I settled on this one.

Note: There is a definite theme of vegan activism on this page, but I found it to be written in an inclusive manner. For example, take vegan food to share with co-workers, rather than the force everyone you know to listen to you rant about veganism on your soapbox as you ram vegan treats at them forcibly (I've been in that situation before). So I'm happy that they're offering practical advice to fellow vegans.

When you arrive at the site, you'll find the featured recipes and easy menu navigation. If something on the featured list doesn't whet your appetite (I was captivated by the Melon Salad with Mint and Lime), then click on Recipes to check out what they have to offer. The featured recipes will still be there, but below them will appear recipe categories or the option to view by ingredient.

The recipe categories are Appetizer, Breakfast, Christmas, Cookie, Cupcake, Curry, Desserts, Drink, Entree, Gluten Free, Grilling, Holiday, Low Fat, Muffins, Quick Bread, Salad, Sandwich, Sauces, Sides, Soups, Stew, Superbowl, Sushi, and Thanksgiving. So you have a lot of different options for recipes.

This site is bookmark worthy, go check it out today!

Wouldn't it be convenient if you had a single solution to get all your old music right onto your PC? Then you could do whatever you want with it... put it on an MP3 player, use it for homemade videos, burn your own CDs...

That dream is now REALITY!

If you can plug in a cord, you can turn your entire music collection into a modern music library right on your computer. It's so easy you'll wonder why nobody came up with it sooner!

SoundSaver is one seriously amazing program, too. Not only does it automate the hardest parts of converting your old music, it has some awesome features that give you increased control over your listening experience.

Removing pops, clicks, and hum is just a single-step process that'll save you from ever hearing unwanted imperfections in your music.

Save it how you want! SoundSaver lets you save files as MP3, WAV, or you can even save it straight into iTunes to make it a snap to get onto your iPod or iPhone.

Dead Horse Point Lightning Strike

We had just been out scouting around for new location in nearby Arches National Park and had decided to come back to camp for a break when these thunderstorms really began to pop (late afternoon). By the time we arrived at the Dead Horse Point, I couldn't get to the overlook fast enough. We scrambled down the sandstone to a spot that I had scouted out the day before and... (more)
