Quick Tip

Lil from MI writes:

I have Windows 7. I would like to organize my documents. How do I make a new folder, & put sub files in this folder? I used to know, however it was not Windows 7.

Hi, Lil. Thanks for the terrific question!

Yes, there is a way to do this. Even better, it's pretty easy.

First off, open the directory that you want to add your new folder to. In this example, I'm using the "My Documents" folder. Across the top, you'll see a series of options. Click on "New Folder".

This will create a blue-highlighted "New Folder" at the bottom of the directory. Simply type whatever you'd like the name of the new folder to be and hit Enter. Once you create the folder, Windows will put it in its correct place alphabetically. Find the folder, open it and then open a separate window with the files that you'd like to move into your new folder, drag and drop. Now it's yours forever.

Hope that this helps!

Need A Calculator? Google It!

Have you ever been at your computer or on a mobile device and needed a good calculator? Of course there is Windows built-in calculator, but now there is also a great option from Google.

If you search Google for the term "calculator", you will be presented with this:

Functions are supported – include adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, sine, cosine, tangent, root, square, pi and many more. Google is rumored to be working on a graphing calculator version of this free calculator.

One really fantastic feature is you can type in an entire equation into the calculator before hitting equal.

For example: (2*(8*(1/4))/7)^3 would normally have to be done on a normal calculator in at least 4 steps, but on the Google calculator you just type it in as written, click = and you get the answer!

For those of you who've forgotten this kind of math, it would be:

  1. 8 x 1/4 = 2.
  2. 2 x 2 = 4
  3. 4 / 7 = 0.571428571428
  4. 0.571428571428 ^ 3 = 0.1865889213 (We rounded)

Pretty cool huh?

The Differences Between Laser and Inkjet Printers

Anyone looking to buy a new printer for his or her home or business is faced with two main options: laser or inkjet. Although in the past, laser printers were much too costly to serve as home printers, prices have started to fall, making both inkjet and laser printers a viable option for all computer users. Before deciding between a laser and an inkjet printer, it is important to understand the differences between the two technologies and how they will affect your printing and your bottom line.

Printing Mechanism

The main difference between laser and inkjet printers is the mechanism used to get the images and text on the paper. Inkjet printers spray ink onto the paper to reproduce text and images whereas laser printers use a more complicated method. A laser printer produces a backward image of the page to be printed on a cylinder using a laser. The laser leaves behind a slight electrical charge on the cylinder or drum wherever it hits. The cylinder is then exposed to toner, which is attracted to the electrical charge. As the paper passes through the printer it receives a small charge, which attracts the toner from the cylinder. Once the toner is on the paper, the paper passes through a roller that heats the toner and melts it onto the paper.

Print Quality

Print quality is one of the major differences users will notice. Laser printers produce crisp, clear type and images, and are better at printing type and images without leaving fuzzy edges. Because inkjet printers spray tiny droplets of ink onto the paper, there is a greater chance that documents printed with an inkjet printer will have fuzzy edges. Also, if pages are touched before they are allowed to completely dry, the ink may smear. Although laser printers typically print at higher resolutions than inkjet printers, some of the higher end inkjet printers are capable of producing crisp text and images comparable to those printed with a laser printer. Another consideration when comparing the quality of printing between inkjet and laser printers is the paper used. Laser printers will produce clear images on any type of paper, while paper specifically manufactured for inkjet printers is recommended if you want clear prints without fuzzy edges using an inkjet printer.

Speed

Laser printers spit out prints much faster than inkjet printers, often producing more than 15 pages per minute depending on the brand and quality of the laser printer. Most inkjet printers offer a draft mode, which is quicker than a high quality print, but the images and type are usually faint when using draft mode. Using standard print settings requires inkjet printers to apply more ink to each line of the page, which increases the print time. While the speed of a printer may not be of much importance to home printer users, many businesses use their printers quite a bit, so print speed is an important fact.

Cost

Although it's possible to purchase a laser printer for about the same price as some of the inkjet printers on the market, buyers should consider the total cost of purchasing and operating the printer before making a decision on which type of printer to purchase. Buyers should price out ink or toner cartridges as well as any special paper that is needed to determine which type of printer is the most cost effective. Although inkjet cartridges are usually less expensive than toner cartridges, they also contain less ink, which means you'll have to purchase more inkjet cartridges than toner cartridges to print the same amount of pieces. If you're looking for crisp, clear prints using an inkjet printer, you'll also need to factor in the price difference between regular printer paper and specialty inkjet paper.

Hope this helps you figure out which printer is right for you!

George from Schlink writes:

I loved the feature in Firefox that allowed me to fill in a form automatically. For some reason, it quit working. I checked the Autofill Options and all the information is there.

For users who frequently enter the same form info on many websites, such as a user name or address, the auto fill feature on the Mozilla Firefox web browser can save a lot of time typing repetitive information. Occasionally, Firefox may stop saving your form data – either because you've accidentally deleted one specific entry or because a setting has been changed which prevents data from being properly stored. If you only deleted one specific entry, simply typing the info in a form field again will save the text and Firefox will then offer the auto fill option in the future.

If the browser doesn't offer the auto fill option on future forms after re-typing your data, you will need to manually modify the privacy options in Firefox. Keep in mind that some websites, such as your bank account access page, specifically prevent the browser from saving form data as a security measure, so Firefox will never fill in data on those sites.

To access the browser's privacy settings, open the orange "Firefox" button in the top-left corner of the screen and click the "Options" entry. When a new sub-menu appears on the screen, click the second "Options" button listed at the top of the menu.

Opening the Options Menu

Navigate to the heading labeled "Privacy" at the top of the screen, which is positioned between the "Applications" and "Security" icons.

The Privacy Tab

Locate the "History" heading at the middle of the window and click the "Firefox Will" drop-down box located directly beneath the heading. Select the option labeled "Use Custom Settings For History" to bring up several new check box options.

Choosing Custom History Settings

Remove the check mark from the box labeled "Always Use Private Browsing Mode" if the box is checked. Check the box named "Remember Search And Form History" to force Firefox to use the auto fill feature on all applicable forms.

Remembering Form History

Locate the box labeled "Clear History When Firefox Closes." Ideally this box should be unchecked, but if you prefer to maintain your privacy by clearing the history when Firefox closes you need to modify this setting as well. If the box is checked, click the "Settings" button located to the right of the box.

Changing Auto-Clear Settings

Underneath the "History" heading in the "Settings" window you will find another series of check boxes. Remove the check mark from the "Form & Search History" box and click "OK," which will prevent Firefox from clearing your saved form data when you close the browser.

Remembering Form And Search History

Click the "OK" button to save your changes to the privacy settings and then navigate to a page containing forms you frequently use. Type your info in the form and then navigate away from the page to any other site. Return to the page and start typing any text in the form to see if the auto fill feature is now functioning. If the problem persists and Firefox doesn't attempt to fill in the form, you likely have an add-on installed that is conflicting with the auto fill feature. Return to the "Firefox" menu at the top of the browser and click the "Add-Ons" button.

Accessing Add-Ons

Open the list of extra programs you have installed on Firefox by clicking the blue "Extensions" icon at the left side of the window.

The Extensions Tab

Locate the first add-on in the list of programs at the right side of the screen. Click the "Disable" button to turn the off the add-on without actually deleting it. Attempt to enter text into a form again on any website to see if the issue is resolved.

Disabling An Add-On

If the problem persists, continue disabling each add-on in the list until you find the offending program. Return to the "Extensions" menu and click "Enable" on each of the other add-ons you previously turned off once the auto fill feature is working again.

On The Move

How to Install the Android USB Drivers

In most cases, when you connect an Android device to your computer for the first time, the drivers will automatically be installed. However, the phone will most likely be detected as a mass storage device, not as an Android device. This gives it similar properties as an external hard drive, and should be fine for most users, since you will still be able to copy files to and from your device.

However, if you need to "debug" your Android device (one of the requirements for rooting), you will need to make sure the computer recognizes it as an Android device. Since there is such a great variety of Android devices, there is no single solution for installing the drivers. This guide should work for most devices, but might not work for all.

Top Sketching Apps for iPad Pt. 2

Now that we've sampled two great iPad sketching apps in the form of Sketchbook Ink and Sketchbook Pro, we take a look at two more apps likely to draw comparisons to Autodesk's offerings: Adobe Ideas and Procreate:

Adobe Ideas

Similar to Sketchbook Ink, Ideas is Adobe's resolution independent sketch app with an emphasis on simplicity. For those who have not yet read our first installment, "resolution independence" is another description for vector based drawing; a process which allows you to zoom in on your lines virtually infinitely without any loss in resolution (pixilation.) this is a great feature once you get used to the nature of vector lines: which automatically "smooth" themselves out to varying degrees once you lift your stylus/finger. Of course, Ideas includes the usual standard features for drawing apps: eraser tools, color picker, undo and re-do, along with a few features sorely missing from other "simple" drawing apps.

From The Archives

The Facebook Timeline

You may have noticed a big difference in how your friends' pages are displayed if they have adopted this new layout of Facebook. Today we are going to discuss how to navigate your way around a Timeline page, and how you can set your own up if you'd like!

Let's go over how to find your way on a friend's Timeline page. The layout is completely different. There are two "profile" pictures – one large picture that is the backdrop at the top of the page, and a smaller icon that displays your current profile picture as well as your complete Profile Pictures album once you click on the little box. You can select and change both as needed. The backdrop picture is not a profile picture, per say, as it is not part of your Profile Pictures album. It simply serves as the background of your page.

George from AZ asks:

How do I get fractions to appear in their small size instead of 1/2 or 3/4 when I type in Microsoft Word or Windows Live Mail?

Hi, George. I'm glad you asked. Your question actually gave me the opportunity to look up autocorrect options on Word 2010, to which I am still fairly new.

What you're talking about here is called replacing fractions with a fraction character. In Word 2010, click on the "File" tab and then "Options", like so:

Amanda's Coolsite

Dear Photograph

Dear Photograph is an interesting photo site where people take a photo of themselves holding an old photo over a similar location and then provide a caption for it. The entries are so poignant and endearing that I knew I wanted to share this site with you.

Navigation is easy, just scroll down the page and when you reach the bottom use either the page numbers or the next arrows to look at the previous posts. I love the concept of the photos, but what I love even more are the cherished memories and glimpses into other people's worlds. You'll read about their special moments, their relationships with their family, and even their re-connection with their childhood self.

Do you want to participate? Well then find the photo you want to photograph, and head over to the Submit link on the left side menu. A form will pop up and ask for your name, e-mail address, caption, and the story behind the photo. Fill that out then click Choose File, and locate where you saved the photo on your computer, select the photo, and then click the Submit button. Make sure you click the link for the Terms of Submission to make sure your photo and story meet the guidelines.

There's not much else to say about this site, the photos really speak for themselves, go check them out!
